Multimaterial three-dimensional printing in brachytherapy: Prototyping teaching tools for interstitial and intracavitary procedures in cervical cancers.

PURPOSE: As the utilization of brachytherapy procedures continues to decline in clinics, a need for accessible training tools is required to help bridge the gap between resident comfort in brachytherapy training and clinical practice. To improve the quality of intracavitary and interstitial high-dose-rate brachytherapy education, a multimaterial, modular, three-dimensionally printed pelvic phantom prototype simulating normal and cervical pathological conditions has been developed. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patient anatomy was derived from pelvic CT and MRI scans from 50 representative patients d

Can 3D-printing avoid discomfort-related implant removal in midshaft clavicle fractures? A four-year follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the variation in shape and curvature of the clavicle, plates often have to be adjusted during surgery to acquire a good fit. Poorly fitted plates can cause discomfort, eventually requiring implant removal. 3D-printed replicas of the fractured clavicle can assist in planning of the surgical approach, plate selection and, if necessary, adjustment of the plate prior to surgery. We hypothesized this method of preoperative preparation would reduce implant-related discomfort resulting in a reduced reoperation rate MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, perioperati

The Importance of Pre-Operative Imaging and 3-D Printing in Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve-in-Valve Replacement.

Pre-operative multimodality imaging has become an integral part of the planning and execution of transcatheter heart valve procedures. 3D printing of a patient-specific cardiac model is a novel addition to these procedures. This case report discusses the use of pre-operative multimodality imaging, intra-operative fusion imaging, and 3D printing as valuable adjuncts in the planning and simulation of complex structural heart procedures. We describe the case of a 44-year-old woman with prior tricuspid bioprosthetic valve replacement and mechanical mitral valve replacement who presented with dyspn…

Percutaneous coronary intervention of an anomalous coronary chronic total occlusion: The added value of three-dimensional printing.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has had an evolving role in cardiology, although has been largely reserved for planning of structural heart disease interventions. We present a case whereby multimodality imaging, including 3D printing, played a pivotal role in planning a technically feasible approach for complex percutaneous coronary intervention of a chronically occluded anomalous right coronary artery, with creation of a customized guide catheter.

Inkjet printing of antiviral PCL nanoparticles and anticancer cyclodextrin inclusion complexes on bioadhesive film for cervical administration.

Personalized medicine is an important treatment approach for diseases like cancer with high intrasubject variability. In this framework, printing is one of the most promising methods since it permits dose and geometry adjustment of the final product. With this study, a combination product consisting of anticancer (paclitaxel) and antiviral (cidofovir) drugs was manufactured by inkjet printing onto adhesive film for local treatment of cervical cancers as a result of HPV infection. Furthermore, solubility problem of paclitaxel was overcome by maintaining this poorly soluble drug in a cyclodextri…

Three-dimensional printing and computer navigation assisted hemipelvectomy for en bloc resection of osteochondroma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Three-dimensional (3D) printed templates can be designed to match an individual's anatomy, allowing surgeons to refine preoperative planning. In addition, the use of computer navigation (NAV) is gaining popularity to improve surgical accuracy in the resection of pelvic tumors. However, its use in combination with 3D printing to assist complex pelvic tumor resection has not been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 36-year-old man presented with left-sided pelvic pain and a fast-growing mass. He also complained of a 3-month history of radiating pain and numbness in the lower left extremity…

How to produce pre-shaped rigid arch bars using low-cost 3D printing technology - A technical note.

Numerous oral and maxillofacial procedures in dentate patients begin with the fixation of occlusions. While several techniques exist to perform mandibulo-maxillary fixation, many surgeons use arch bars in common practice. In cases of severe craniofacial traumas or jaw malformations, such as temporomandibular joint ankylosis, it may be impossible to use rigid arch bars. This technical note reports on the development of a technique to produce pre-shaped rigid arch bars using 3D printing technology. We take the case of a patient who presents Le Fort 1, Le Fort 2 and Le Fort 3 fractures as well as…

3D Printing to Guide Ventricular Assist Device Placement in Adults With Congenital Heart Disease and Heart Failure.

As the population of adults with congenital heart disease continues to grow, so does the number of these patients with heart failure. Ventricular assist devices are underutilized in adults with congenital heart disease due to their complex anatomic arrangements and physiology. Advanced imaging techniques that may increase the utilization of mechanical circulatory support in this population must be explored. Three-dimensional printing offers individualized structural models that would enable pre-surgical planning of cannula and device placement in adults with congenital cardiac disease and hear…

Three-Dimensional Printing and Surgical Simulation for Preoperative Planning of Deformity Correction in Foot and Ankle Surgery.

A paucity of published data is available describing the methods for the integration of 3-dimensional (3D) printing technology and surgical simulation into orthopedic surgery. The cost of this technology has decreased and the ease of use has increased, making routine use of 3D printed models and surgical simulation for difficult orthopedic problems a realistic option. We report the use of 3D printed models and surgical simulation for preoperative planning and patient education in the case of deformity correction in foot and ankle surgery using open source, free software.
