Partial Shoulder Arthroplasty Guided by Three-dimensional Prototyping.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is a reality in medicine. In Orthopedics and Traumatology, 3D printing guides a precise and tailored surgical treatment. Understanding and disseminating its applicability, use, and outcomes can foster academicism and improve patient care. This is a report of a rare case of a female young adult patient with osteonecrosis of the humeral head due to avascular necrosis developed in early childhood. The treatment was tailored and optimized with 3D printing, which helped determine the steps for partial humeral arthroplasty.

Electrochemical quantification of thymol in Thymus vulgaris essential oil with a 3D-printed electrode.

Thymol (TM), a monoterpenoid phenol with diverse antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, is of significant interest to the pharmaceutical, food, and agricultural sectors. Due to its importance, this study developed an electrochemical method for its quantification using a 3D-printed electrode made from a conductive carbon black/PLA filament (CB/PLA electrode). Electrochemical measurements were performed using square-wave voltammetry (SWV) in 0.1 mol L⁻1 Na2SO4 (pH 13). The potential was scanned from 0 to +0.80 V, exploiting the oxidation process of TM at approximately +0.30 V (vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl

3D-printed low-voltage-driven ciliary hydrogel microactuators.

Micrometre-sized, densely packed natural cilia that perform non-reciprocal 3D motions with dynamically tunable collective patterns are crucial for biological processes such as microscale locomotion1, nutrient acquisition2, cell trafficking3-5 and embryonic and neurological development6-8. However, replicating these motions in artificial systems remains challenging given the limits of scalable, locally controllable soft-bodied actuation at the micrometre scale. Overcoming this challenge would enhance our understanding of ciliary dynamics, clarify their biological importance and enable new micro

3D-printed solid-contact chloride sensor for sweat-based cystic fibrosis screening.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder marked by impaired chloride transport, with elevated sweat chloride concentration serving as the primary diagnostic biomarker. Here, we report a 3D-printed chloride-selective ion-selective electrode (3Dp-Cl--ISE) for sweat chloride analysis relevant to CF screening. This work introduces a solvent-free, 3D-printed solid-contact chloride ISE that integrates a photocurable non-polyvinyl chloride selective membrane with a carbon-cloth transducer. The sensor combines a stereolithography (SLA)-printed membrane with a porous, hydrophobic carbon cloth substra

Development of a 3D-printed bra with an incorporated prosthesis for post-mastectomy women.

BACKGROUND: Women who have undergone mastectomy and do not undergo reconstruction often face challenges with existing bras and prostheses. Mismatches between generic prostheses and individual mastectomy cases result in physical and mental discomfort, such as pain, sweating, asymmetry, and concerns about prosthesis movement. Existing solutions are limited in their ability to address these challenges effectively. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a workflow for designing and fabricating a lightweight post-mastectomy bra with an incorporated prosthesis to improve fit, symmetry, and comfort.

Preparation and characterization of pectin polysaccharides-containing Gardenia extract with dual functionality in food gel formation and coloring for 3D printing application.

Pectin polysaccharides play an important role in food processing as thickeners, gelling agents and emulsifiers. However, complex extraction processes, the need for multiple purification steps, low yields and high costs, etc. limited their application in food industry. In addition, the byproduct of food processing - gardenia residue from the oil processing industry - still contains valuable substances such as pectin polysaccharides and natural pigment crocin. This study utilized a simple, economical and eco-friendly water extraction (WE) method to efficiently obtain extracts containing pectin p

3D Printed Biosponge Adsorbers for Capturing Toxic Chemotherapy Drugs In Situ in the Body.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in most developed nations. Although significant efforts have been made to develop targeted cancer chemotherapy drugs for decades, dosing of chemotherapy drugs is still limited by systematic toxic side effects. To reduce the toxicities of chemotherapy, we have designed a 3D printed biosponge adsorber that can capture the excess untrapped chemotherapy drugs in situ before they circulate throughout the body. Specifically, we focused on liver cancer because of the liver's proximity to the heart with a model drug, doxorubicin (Dox), a highly effective chemothera

Assessment of the accuracy of digital surgical planning and its implementation with tibial plateau levelling osteotomy.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-operative planning of orthopaedic procedures is widely regarded as critical to their safe execution; however, the ability to both accurately plan and enact the plan have not been assessed in the veterinary context. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of boarded surgeons compared to surgical trainees to reproducibly plan a TPLO and then to implement this plan in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: Twelve participants planned 10 TPLOs from blinded radiographs of dogs diagnosed with cranial cruciate ligament disease; this was repeated four weeks later and compared between s

Mechanically-driven expandable patch promotes tracheal defect reconstruction via synergistic microcurrent and mechanical force cascades.

Tracheal defects constitute severe respiratory disorders arising from multifactorial etiologies, with current therapeutic modalities significantly constrained by anatomical limitations, compromised vascularization at anastomotic sites, and frequent graft rejection. These challenges are further compounded by the inability to deliver continuous and quantitatively controlled regenerative signals, thereby limiting the efficacy of tissue regeneration and vascular reconstruction. Herein, we designed a mechanically driven, 3D-printed piezoelectric system (PFT) capable of transducing mechanical energy

Evaluation of novel materials for front-of-neck access simulations.

Neck rescue encompasses a variety of techniques and terms used to describe direct access to the trachea to allow delivery of oxygen into the airway, typically in the context of a 'can't intubate, can't oxygenate' (CICO) scenario. Anaesthetists rely on CICO simulation exercises to obtain competency in neck rescue using commercially available plastic airway models. Recently, innovations in three-dimensional (3D)-printed airway models and 'symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast' (SCOBY) skins have been trialled for CICO training. We undertook a study to compare the fidelity of a 3D-printed airwa

Vortex-enhanced bone regeneration: gyroid gradient scaffolds tune permeability for hemodynamic-accelerated osseointegration.

Bone defects, prevalent in orthopaedic practice due to trauma or disease, present apparent clinical repair challenges. This study innovatively designed vortex-enhanced gyroid gradient scaffolds through finite element hydrodynamic simulation and selective laser melting (SLM) 3D printing, systematically evaluating their permeability and osteogenic efficacy. Homogeneous triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) gyroid structures (50%, 60%, 70% porosity) and a gradient porous scaffold (average 60% porosity) were modeled. ANSYS-based hydrodynamic analysis revealed that the gradient scaffold maximized

Production and Use of Customizable Agarose Molds for Scaffold-Free Mouse Ovarian Follicle Culture.

The ovarian follicle is the functional unit of the ovary that produces hormones and gametes needed to sustain female reproductive function and health. The ability to recapitulate folliculogenesis, ovulation, and luteinization in vitro has broad basic, translational, and clinical utility. The most advanced in vitro follicle growth systems maintain the follicle's three-dimensional (3D) architecture, which is crucial for the development of meiotically competent metaphase II oocytes in humans. Recently, a scaffold-free method for in vitro follicle growth of mouse multilayer secondary follicles was
