This is a prospective analysis of 107 consecutive cases of extradural hematoma treated during the last 3 years at the Department of Neurosurgery of the University Hospital of Verona (Italy). In 50 patients requiring enteral nutritional support, a nasogastric feeding regimen with an isotonic, polymeric solution was introduced either by the slow, conventional four-day method or by a more rapid one. This paper presents the results of a prospective study on argon laser trabeculoplasty with clinical application in 166 cases up to now. So far, patients have been followed up for between 2 and 12 months. Low-intensity coagulation was performed over 360 degrees of the trabecular meshwork. In a prospective study 76 gastric polyps (of 67 patients) were investigated consecutively by forceps biopsy and by endoscopic polypectomy. The results were compared histologically. Differences arose only in the group where focal foveolar hyperplasia had been diagnosed by forceps biopsy. We prospectively studied the clinical applicability of intravenous lidocaine for regional anesthesia in the lower extremity in fifty-eight consecutive patients. We assessed the feasibility of a selective policy for operative exploration of penetrating neck wounds. Patients with bleeding, hematomas, crepitations, dysphagia, dysphonia, or impaired mental status rendering their conditions nonevaluative had prompt explorations. We have studied the gallbladder and its contents by ultrasonography in 31 patients with acute viral hepatitis and 23 age-matched controls. Liver cell necrosis was assessed by raised transaminase levels within 24-48 hr of ultrasonography in all patients. Gallbladder wall (GBW) measured 5.16 +/- 0.4 mm (mean +/- SEM) in patients and 2.0 +/- 0.06 mm in controls (P less than 0.001). Thyroid function tests including thyroxine (T4), T3 test, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free T4 index and antithyroid antibodies were studied in 51 patients before the start of long-term lithium therapy and after 4 and 12 months on lithium. Routine administration of antibiotics in the treatment of pneumonia and bronchiolitis in infants and small children was evaluated in an open randomised prospective trial. Allergens eliciting weak positive reactions were retested to ascertain their reproducibility. Weak positive patch test reactions, concomitant to other weak or strong positive reactions, were retested after 3 weeks in 61 patients. 79 reactions were retested; 35 (44.3%) were negative. Two cases of recurrent major depression, three cases of dysthymic disorder (depressive neurosis), and one of adjustment disorder with depressed mood beginning in childhood or adolescence have been identified in the 133 subjects of the New York Longitudinal Study.
