Characterization of Cutaneous Radiation Syndrome in a Mouse Model Using [ 18 F]F- Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography.

Ionizing radiation on the skin has the potential to cause various sequelae affecting quality of life and even leading to death due to multi-system failure. The development of radiation dermatitis is attributed to oxidative damage to the skin's basal layer and alterations in immune response, leading to inflammation. Past studies have shown that [ 18 F]F-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography ([ 18 F]F-FDG PET/CT) can be used effectively for the detection of inflammatory activity, especially in conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, and early ather

Pregnancy after successful cancer treatment: what needs to be considered?

Over the last decade, advances in oncology led to improved treatment results and increasing numbers of long-term cancer survivors. Fulfilling the desire to have children is important for many patients after cancer treatment. Consequently, oncologists, gynecologists and obstetricians are seeing more patients who wish to conceive after treatment. The necessary prerequisites that should be considered when supporting a planned pregnancy after cancer treatment are discussed in this article. The possible consequences of chemotherapy and radiotherapy on the course of pregnancy and the health of the o

Treatment of radiation-induced dermatitis with light-emitting diode (LED) photomodulation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Light-emitting diode (LED) photomodulation increases dermal collagen and reduces inflammation. This study evaluated the use of LED photomodulation in the prevention of radiation-induced dermatitis in breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients (n=19) were treated with LED photomodulation (Gentlewaves, Light BioScience, LLC, Virginia Beach, VA) after each of a series of intensity-modulated radiation treatments (IMRT). Skin reactions were monitored weekly with National Cancer Institute (NCI) criteria. Age-matched controls (n=28) received IMRT without LED photomodula

A C57L/J Mouse Model of the Delayed Effects of Acute Radiation Exposure in the Context of Evolving Multi-Organ Dysfunction and Failure after Total-Body Irradiation with 2.5% Bone Marrow Sparing.

The objective of the current study was to establish a mouse model of acute radiation syndrome (ARS) after total-body irradiation with 2.5% bone marrow sparing (TBI/BM2.5) that progressed to the delayed effects of acute radiation exposure, specifically pneumonitis and/or pulmonary fibrosis (DEARE-lung), in animals surviving longer than 60 days. Two hundred age and sex matched C57L/J mice were assigned to one of six arms to receive a dose of 9.5 to 13.25 Gy of 320 kV X-ray TBI/BM2.5. A sham-irradiated cohort was included as an age- and sex-matched control. Blood was sampled from the facial vein

Controlling the formation of silver nanoparticles on silica by photochemical deposition and other means.

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NP) on silica were produced in aqueous solution by deposition of silver on colloidal silica in a small cuvette using radiation from a xenon-mercury lamp. Ag-NP were also synthesized on a much larger scale with low-level, long-term visible light irradiation for several months. In both cases, the nanoparticle production was monitored by the appearance of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at around 410 nm. The growth of the nanoparticles was directly related to the time exposed to radiation, which could be tracked spectrophotometrically over time. We also investiga

Motion direction discrimination in blind hemifields.

We tested motion direction discrimination with random dot cinematograms (RDCs) projected into the contralateral homonymous visual field defects of 10 patients with unilateral cerebral hemispheric lesions. Five patients had medial occipital lesions that spared the putative motion area in lateral occipitotemporal cortex and the optic radiations and other white matter tracts proximal to this site. The other 5 had lesions involving this area or the proximal optic radiations. Eye position was monitored to ensure fixation. No patient in either group discriminated motion direction in signal/noise RDC

Malignant Conversion of Eyelid Capillary Hemangioma to Cutaneous Angiosarcoma.

Angiosarcomas represent a rare aggressive malignancy of endothelial cell origin that carry a poor prognosis. Here, the authors report the case of a 71-year-old male presenting with a well-differentiated angiosarcoma of the right upper eyelid which arose at the site of a congenital eyelid hemangioma. The patient had undergone multiple surgical resections of the hemangioma previously without adjunctive radiation therapy. This lends evidence to the potential for malignant transformation of benign hemangiomas, and long-term monitoring of benign cutaneous vascular lesions should be considered.

An overview of magnetic resonance enterography for Crohn's disease.

Magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) is a relatively new imaging modality that has shown promise for diagnosing, staging, and monitoring Crohn's disease (CD) and its complications while avoiding exposure to ionizing radiation. In addition to clinical implications, MRE has the potential to be used as an objective measure of disease activity for clinical trials. We provide the rationale for MRE, indications for its use, and an overview of the typical procedure and common findings for institutions who want to begin or refine the use of MRE for CD.

Feasibility of surface-guided radiotherapy for detecting patient instability during prostate radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Maintaining patient immobility during radiotherapy is essential for accurate dose delivery; however, patients may experience discomfort during treatment, leading to involuntary movement. Continuous imaging to detect intrafractional changes is not routinely feasible in conventional fractionation due to radiation exposure. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of knee-based surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) as a real-time method for detecting subtle patient motion during prostate radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 125 patients undergoing prostate intensity-modulate

[Imaging options in pediatric rheumatology].

There has been growing interest in the use of imaging modalities in pediatric rheumatology for the past 15 years. Nowadays, highly sensitive imaging techniques can be used to detect early stages of pediatric rheumatic diseases in addition to the physical examination. Magnetic resonance imaging and musculoskeletal ultrasound play the most important role. Moreover, these two techniques are of great value in differential diagnostics and therapy monitoring. The use of imaging methods with a high radiation exposure could therefore be greatly reduced over the last decade.

Influence of the external and internal radioactive contamination of the body and the clothes on the results of the thyroidal 131I measurements conducted in Belarus after the Chernobyl accident-Part 2: Monte Carlo simulation of response of detectors near the thyroid.

This paper describes the calculation of the response of the most common types of radiation detectors that were used within the first few weeks after the Chernobyl accident to determine the activity of 131I in the thyroids of Belarusian subjects of an epidemiologic study of thyroid cancer. The radiation detectors, which were placed against the necks of the subjects, measured the exposure rates due to the emission of gamma rays resulting from the radioactive decay of 131I in their thyroids. Because of the external and internal radioactive contamination of the monitored subjects, gamma radiation

Thoracic Proton Minibeam Radiation Therapy: Tissue Preservation and Survival Advantage Over Conventional Proton Therapy.

PURPOSE: Proton minibeam radiation therapy (pMBRT) is an innovative radiation therapy approach that highly modulates the spatial dimension of the dose delivery using narrow, parallel, and submillimetric proton beamlets. pMBRT has proven its remarkable healthy tissue preservation in the brain and skin. This study assesses the potential advantages of pMBRT for thoracic irradiations compared with conventional radiation therapy in terms of normal tissue toxicity. The challenge here was the influence of respiratory motion on the typical peak and valley dose patterns of pMBRT and its potential biolo

External radiation dose and cancer mortality among French nuclear workers: considering potential confounding by internal radiation exposure.

OBJECTIVES: French nuclear workers have detailed records of their occupational exposure to external radiation that have been used to examine associations with subsequent cancer mortality. However, some workers were also exposed to internal contamination by radionuclides. This study aims to assess the potential for bias due to confounding by internal contamination of estimates of associations between external radiation exposure and cancer mortality. METHODS: A cohort of 59,004 workers employed for at least 1 year between 1950 and 1994 by CEA (Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique), AREVA NC, or ED
