Anterior Stafne's bone cavity mimicking a periapical lesion of endodontic origin: report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION: This report of 2 cases describes the diagnostic procedures used to identify 2 Stafne's bone cavities (SBC) found in unusually anterior locations in the mandible, both mimicking periapical lesions of endodontic origin. METHODS: In the first patient, a 47-year-old man, an SBC was diagnosed in the area of teeth #27, 28, and 29. In the second patient, a 62-year-old man, the SBC was a fortuitous finding, because this patient was referred for dental implant therapy. RESULTS: In both cases, the final diagnosis was achieved by using limited cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magn

Endodontic management of dens evaginatus of maxillary central incisors: a rare case report.

Dens evaginatus is a disturbance in tooth development that produces a tubercle of hard tissue on the surface of the tooth. While prophylactic pulp capping is recommended for vital teeth, teeth with necrotic pulps require endodontic therapy or extraction. This rare case of a 24-yr-old Indian male with affected maxillary central incisors demonstrates the clinical consequences of dens evaginatus.

Diagnosing inflammatory and non-inflammatory periapical disease.

Most central bony lesions appearing in a periapical location are inflammatory in nature secondary to pulpal degeneration. However, cysts, tumors, and other diseases may be easily confused with such endodontic lesions. Four clinical cases are presented, illustrating the importance of thorough evaluation and the role of biopsy in appropriate cases.

Actual Proliferating Index and p53 protein expression as prognostic marker in odontogenic cysts.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biological aggressiveness of odontogenic keratocyst/keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT), radicular cyst (RC) and dentigerous cyst (DC) by observing the actual proliferative activity of epithelium, and p53 protein expression. METHODS: The actual proliferative activity was measured by Ki-67 Labelling Index and argyrophilic nucleolar organizing regions (AgNOR) count per nucleus. The p53 protein expression was also evaluated. RESULTS: Ki-67 positive cells were observed higher in suprabasal cell layers of KCOT with uniform distribution,…

The aggressive nature of the odontogenic keratocyst: is it a benign cystic neoplasm? Part 2. Proliferation and genetic studies.

Immunocytochemical studies of the expression of PCNA, Ki67 and p53 protein have been done by different groups on sporadic keratocysts (OKCs) and OKCs associated with the naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). These 'markers' have in common that they are all expressed in actively proliferating cells, particularly in neoplasms. The findings were compared with their expression in dentigerous and radicular cysts. While there was some variability in the reported results, probably because of technical inconsistencies and the use of different antibodies, a definite trend emerged. In general P…

Safety and Efficacy of Intracystic Fibrin Glue Injection for CSF-Venous Fistulas.

We evaluated the safety and efficacy of CT-guided intracystic fibrin glue injection for CSF-venous fistulas (CVFs) causing spontaneous intracranial hypotension. In this 2-center retrospective series, 16 patients underwent fibrin injection directly into the diverticular cyst, with additional epidural or paravertebral injection as needed. Median intracystic fibrin volume was 1.0 mL; thecal sac extension was present in 44% of cases. No serious or permanent complications, arachnoiditis, or neurologic deficits were observed. Transient rebound intracranial hypertension occurred in 31% and transient

Stimulation of interleukin-6 production of periodontal ligament cells by Porphyromonas endodontalis lipopolysaccharide.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6), which is a multifunctional cytokine, has important roles in acute and chronic inflammation and may also be implicated in bone resorption. We examined the IL-6 production in periodontal ligament (PDL) cells which were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from several oral inflammatory pathogens. The LPS from Porphyromonas endodontalis, which was isolated from infected root canals and radicular cyst fluids, was more potent than the LPS from any other periodontal organisms examined. P. endodontalis LPS stimulated IL-6 release from PDL cells in a time- and dose-dependent man…

[Value of peroperative endoscopy in treating giant lumbosacral meningocele].

Lombosacral meningocele may be responsible for sciatica, low backache, cauda equina syndrome according to their localization and size. When they are symptomatic, the surgical purpose is to close the communication between the meningeal sac and the cyst. For giant meningocele, acute localization of the communication may be difficult. In such cases, peroperative endoscopy may be useful. We present a case of sciatica related to a giant meningocele extended from L2 to S2. MRI, CT scan and myelography were unable to localize the communication. We used peroperative endoscopy for direct visualization
