BACKGROUND: Several cases of long term radiation sequelae have been reported in patients with lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis after breast or chest wall irradiation. To the authors' knowledge, no experience with such complications in patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) has been reported previously.
METHODS: A case of a woman with occult breast carcinoma metastatic to the axilla and preexisting MCTD is presented. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case report of the adverse effects of breast irradiation in a patient with MCTD. The pathophysiology of such r

A retrospective analysis was performed to investigate the radioprotective effects of azelastine against radiation dermatitis for patients with head and neck cancers. The effects of azelastine were studied in 19 patients with laryngeal cancers treated by irradiation. As controls, 29 patients with laryngeal cancers treated by irradiation without the administration of azelastine were studied. All patients were irradiated using 3 MV linac X-rays. Azelastine was administered orally twice a day. Moist desquamation was observed in four of 29 control patients whereas no such moist desquamation develop

Enhancement of radiation injury to the skin and mucous membranes has been observed with a number of chemotherapeutic agents. A 32-year-old woman with metastatic breast cancer received local radiation therapy to the lumbosacral area. Six weeks later, systemic edatrexate therapy was initiated and a localized painful erythema with edema and a vesicular eruption occurred over the previous site of radiation therapy. Physicians should be aware that edatrexate can cause radiation recall, and that careful use of anti-inflammatory agents may allow continued chemotherapy treatment.

The effects of radiation are not tissue selective. Changes are consistent with thermal injury, but evolve in a more insidious manner. Erythema, edema, itching, and osteonecrosis can occur. These changes, over the sacrum, can lead to a spinal cutaneous fistula with persistent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak in association with ulceration. Soft tissue coverage alone appears to be inadequate treatment. Aggressive bony debridement with dural patching have prevented recurrence of the fistula in a recent case.

The half-period of mouse skin regeneration after sublethal injuries caused by hyperthermia (44 degrees C) was 2.9 h and completed within 16-24 h. The half-period of regeneration after sublethal injuries caused by ionizing radiation was 2.1 h at a dose of 5 Gy and 4.3 at a dose of 20 Gy. The rate of mouse skin regeneration after sublethal injuries caused by exposure to ionizing radiation only and in combination with hyperthermia at similar levels of injury did not differ.

Alteration of the skin induced by single and repeated long-wave ultraviolet (UVA) exposures was studied. Following a single exposure to relatively large doses of UVA, pronounced dermal damage was observed. In the papillary dermis, superficial dermal vessels showed widely open endothelial gaps and extravasation of blood cells. Marked changes of fibroblasts were also seen in the superficial dermis. In the reticular dermis, extravascular fibrin deposition was seen. After repeated exposures to UVA the formation of cross-banded filamentous aggregations ("Zebra bodies") was observed in the superfici
