Reflex sweating in patients with spinal cord injury: a review.

Sweat glands derive their innervation from the sympathetic nervous system. The spinal sympathetic structures that are located in the intermediolateral areas extend from T1-L2 segments and are under the control of hypothalamic centers. Cord transection abolishes the supraspinal control of sudorimotor function. Since sympathetic innervation does not follow a clear segmental distribution, normal sweating may be preserved at a higher or lower level than skin sensation. Nonthermoregulatory reflex sweating is an indication of unchecked spinal cord facilitation and is precipitated by afferent stimuli…

Reflex effects of vibration in patients with spinal cord lesions.

The vibration reflex was studied in 49 patients with traumatic spinal cord lesions. It was elicited in all patients, even after presumably complete division of the cord. The vibration relfex consisted of a short-latency, brief outburst of phasic activity of motor units, followed by rapidly decreasing phasic component and a later slowly declining tonic component. When periods of vibration were repeated at short intervals of 2 to 10 seconds, the responses showed an approximately exponential decline, although the beginning of each subsequent response was always larger than the end of the precedin…

Critical bandwidth and sensitivity prediction in the acoustic stapedial reflex.

Critical bandwidth measurements and sensitivity prediction from the acoustic reflex (SPAR) test results were obtained on 20 normal-hearing and two groups of 10 hearing-impaired subjects each representing mild-to-moderate and severe hearing loss. Results of critical bandwidth measurements indicated that for center frequencies of 1000 and 2000 Hz the critical bandwidth was significantly greater for the hearing-impaired subjects. A statistical analysis of the differences in critical bandwidth between those predicted by the SPAR test to have a mild-to-moderate hearing loss and those subjects for w…

Collapsing ears and acoustic reflex measurement with circumaural ear cushions.

Ears that collapse from audiometer ear cushion pressure may show elevated stapedial reflex thresholds. In such cases, erroneous judgments about the status of a patient's hearing are possible. Experiments on 15 normal ears suggest that the use of a circumaural ear cushion on the impedance audiometer headset is an effective method of eliminating outer ear closure and the resulting spurious thresholds, when the proper correction values by frequency are applied to the audiometer dial reading. In this study, correction values for reflex-eliciting stimuli are established and their use in a child wit…

Direct and reflex cardiac bradydysrhythmias from small vagal nerve stiumaltions.

Alterations in cardiac pacemaker location, its rate of discharge, and A-V conduction patterns were induced in anesthetized adult dogs by ele … ecurrent laryngeal nerve and its cardiac branches before and after vagotomy induced both direct and reflex effects on SA nodal cycle length. Efferent dromotropic effects on the A-V node varied from first- to third-degree heart block during stimulation of individual left recurrent cardiac branches. Stimulation of the right recurrent cardiac nerve induced …

Diagnostic yield of OCT3/4 reflex testing in testicular biopsy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Occult germ cell neoplasia in situ (GCNIS) can occur in testicular biopsies prompted by male infertility with or without concomitant contralateral tumour. Immunohistochemistry can improve the diagnostic yield of GCNIS. The objective of this long-spanned retrospective single institutional series is to assess the value of OCT3/4 reflex testing on the detection of GCNIS. METHODS: Through a search of the pathology medical system, we included all men who underwent testicular biopsy for infertility, including cases with a known or suspected germ cell tumour (GCT) between 2…

High-speed infrared imaging analysis of spontaneous versus reflex blinking.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Blinking plays a vital role in protecting the eye and maintaining ocular surface health. Understanding blink behaviour may help identify ocular surface disorders and detect blink abnormalities associated with systemic or neurological conditions. BACKGROUND: This study assessed the kinematic characteristics of spontaneous blinking versus mechanically evoked reflex blinking and explored their relationship with potentially related ocular surface characteristics. METHODS: This pilot study used high-speed infrared imaging to capture spontaneous and reflex blinking in 11 partic…

Age Impairs Corneal Sensitivity and Reflex Tearing in Congenital Aniridia.

PURPOSE: To characterize, for the first time, corneal sensory nerve functionality in congenital aniridia by assessing mechanical and cold corneal sensitivity, reflex tearing, and basal blinking and tearing. METHODS: A cohort of fourteen pediatric and adult patients with PAX6-related aniridia was enrolled in the study. Mechanical sensitivity (noncontact gas esthesiometer) and cold sensitivity (4°C drops) were quantified using a 0 to 10 verbal numerical scale (VNS). Spontaneous blinking, basal, and CO2-induced reflex tearing were also measured. Data were stratified by age, aniridia-associated k…

Pathophysiology of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease: The Reflux vs Reflex Theory.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) involves the reflux of stomach contents into the upper aerodigestive tract, causing symptoms through both direct injury and reflex-mediated mechanisms. While traditional reflux and reflex theories provide insights into LPR pathogenesis, they do not fully encompass its clinical spectrum. Emerging evidence highlights the role of hypersensitivity-both peripheral and central-in LPR, with significant implications for treatment responses and the impact of psychological factors on symptom severity. Understanding these complex interactions is crucial for developing more …
