Computational fluid dynamics analysis of the hydraulic (filtration) efficiency of a residential swimming pool.

Hydraulic or filtration efficiency of residential swimming pools, quantified in terms of residence time characteristics, is critical to disinfection and thus important to public health. In this study, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model together with Eulerian and Lagrangian-based techniques are used for investigating the residence time characteristics of a passive tracer and particles in the water, representative of chemicals and pathogens, respectively. The flow pattern in the pool is found to be characterized by dead zone regions where water constituents may be retained fo

Association between living environmental quality and risk of gastrointestinal diseases among middle-aged and older adults: evidence from a national study.

BACKGROUND: With the rapid progression of population aging in China, gastrointestinal (GI) diseases have become one of the most common chronic conditions among middle-aged and older adults, substantially impairing quality of life and increasing healthcare burdens. However, evidence regarding the combined effects of multiple living environment factors and their potential interactions on GI health remains limited. METHODS: This study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2020, including 10,032 middle-aged and older adults. The living environment quality

Linking perceived community violence and parenting stress from early childhood to adolescence: A parallel-process growth model.

Community violence is one of the biggest social safety issues in the United States. In the past year, over 1.4 million people were assaulted by various types of community violence (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Understanding how perceived community violence affects maternal parenting stress, independent of other community characteristics, is critical for developing targeted interventions that support families in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Using data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 4,898 families across 20 U.S. cities), we estimated linear growt

"I wasn't really welcome in that community": A qualitative study of place, intersectional stigma, and health among Black sexual minoritized men in Baltimore.

Social and structural determinants of health are often spatially bound, limiting access to resources that influence health. Where people go and their interactions shape and are shaped by intersectional stigma, with profound potential impacts on health. Yet, further research is needed to understand how place intersects with intersectional stigma to affect people's daily lives and health. To inform place-based HIV prevention and care interventions in Baltimore, we conducted 20 in-depth interviews with Black sexual minoritized men. Interviews explored interrelationships between place, social rela

Association between living arrangement and psychological well-being among patients with major depressive disorder: the moderating role of body mass index.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent globally, significantly impacting psychological well-being (PWB). Herein, we aim to evaluate the impact of different living arrangements on PWB in individuals with MDD and explore the potential moderating role of BMI in this relationship. METHODS: Participants with MDD were recruited from a specialist mental health hospital between December 2019 and April 2023. The diagnosis of MDD was assessed by trained psychiatrists using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.). Psychological well-being was evaluated using

Legal Cynicism and Drug Use at the Microgeographic Level: Evidence from a Study of Crime Hot Spots.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature demonstrates that drug activities are concentrated in specific microgeographic areas, exhibiting strong street-to-street variability within neighborhoods. However, little is known about what affects the likelihood of illegal drug use at the microgeographic level. By applying a legal cynicism framework, we aim to explain the likelihood of illegal drug use at the microgeographic level. METHODS: We leverage survey and crime data at 449 street segments, primarily comprised of crime or drug hot spots in Baltimore, Maryland. Mixed-effects OLS regression mode

Victimization in the Grain Tower: A Study of the Effect of Community Perceptions on Victimization Risk and Perceived Wellness in a Rural Environment.

Social science research has studied the role of neighborhood order in explaining perceptions of crime and official crime statistics for decades. When citizens perceive their neighborhood to be socially and/or physically disordered, community and interpersonal relationships diminish, mistrust increases, including negative perceptions of police legitimacy, and overall individual wellness decreases. However, little is known about these interactions within a college population-neighborhoods referred to as "studentification" and described as "student ghettos." Using an online survey distributed to

Daily Path Areas and Location Use During and After Cardiac Rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Little research has focused on the potential impact that the environment plays in shaping cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patient sedentary time (ST) and physical activity (PA). To address this, the current study generated daily path areas (DPAs) based on the locations they visited during and after they completed CR. METHODS: Patients in CR (n = 66) completed a survey and wore an accelerometer and Global Positioning System receiver for 7 days early (first month), late (last 2 weeks of program), and 3 months after completing CR. RESULTS: Individual DPAs were approximately 24 km 2 at base

Variability in the Population Diffusion Patterns of SARS-CoV-2 by Exposure Setting and Its Roles in Driving Epidemic Dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Identifying transmission events that trigger epidemic spread is paramount for informing outbreak control. This study characterised the population diffusion patterns of SARS-CoV-2 across exposure settings and evaluate their ramifications in epidemic growth. METHODS: In Hong Kong, COVID-19 clusters delineated through case-based surveillance during the pandemic period were classified into eight exposure settings: residence, home gathering, neighbourhood, workplace (office)/school, workplace (non-office), daily activity, social activity and healthcare. Diffusion patterns characterised

The risk of thyroid cancer in relation to residential proximity to nuclear power plants: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Ionizing radiation is a human carcinogen, and there is a public concern but limited evidence that it increases the incidence of cancer among those who live near nuclear power plants (NPPs). Previous analyses of thyroid cancer in these populations have been inconsistent, and the last synthesis was published nearly a decade ago. To address these gaps, we undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: A search strategy was developed and applied to PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. A total of 2006 publications were identified, with 11 studies of thyroid cancer

Neighborhood Deprivation and Changes in Oral Health in Older Age: A Longitudinal Population-Based Study.

The aim of this study was to examine the extent to which neighborhood-level socioeconomic factors (objective and perceived) are associated with poor oral health in older adults over time, independent of individual socioeconomic position. Data for this cross-sectional and longitudinal observation study came from a socially and geographically representative cohort of men aged 71 to 92 y in 2010-12 (n = 1,622), drawn from British general practices, which was followed up in 2018-19 (aged 78-98 y; N = 667). Dental measures at both times included number of teeth, periodontal pocket depth, self-rated

Gender and age variations in the association between multigenerational cohabitation and self-rated health among middle-aged and older adults in Japan.

Despite encouraging multi-generational cohabitation, the population of Japanese people living alone has increased. However, little is known about the association between health and multigenerational cohabitation. This study examined the relationship between self-rated health and living arrangements among Japanese adults using data from the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study (2013-2017). The analysis employed multivariate logistic regression to examine the associations. Our results showed no association between living arrangements and self-rated health when stratified by gende

Built Environment and Gender-Based Vulnerability as Key Drivers of Food Insecurity in Allegheny County.

Food insecurity is pervasive in Allegheny County, as one in five residents experiences food insecurity. Food insecurity is linked to chronic health conditions like heart disease and hypertension and disproportionately affects women in the United States, particularly women who are head of household. There are multiple dimensions used to measure regional disparities in food accessibility. Prior research has examined the linkages between food access and food insecurity, and this study aims to explore further the relationship between equitable access to sustainable and affordable food sources. Spatiotemporal variability of the association between greenspace exposure and depression in older adults in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies based on young to middle aged adult and child samples have found that exposure to greenspace and bluespace can have a positive impact on mental health and well-being. However, there is limited research among older adults and the extant studies have provided mixed results. The present study was designed to examine how the association between these forms of exposure and depressive symptoms among older adults varies as a function of different spatially and temporally resolved exposure metrics. METHODS: The sample consisted of 617 individuals (46.19% female) aged ≥

Residential relocation and changes in patterns of environmental exposures by health determinants among children and adolescents in Catalonia, Spain.

Residential relocation leads to environmental changes, besides being likely to be influenced by sociodemographic characteristics. The relationship between them is, however, still not well described. We aimed to investigate changes in patterns of urban, natural and physical environmental exposures due to relocation and related sociodemographic determinants in a population-based cohort study of children and adolescents. We included individuals between 0 and 17 years of age, registered in primary healthcare records in Catalonia, Spain from 2006 to 2018 and categorized them as non-movers and mover

Similarity- and neighbourhood-based dynamic models for infection data: Uncovering the complexities of the COVID-19 infection risks.

Understanding spatial and temporal risk dependencies and correlation is crucial when studying infectious diseases which spread out in consecutive waves. By analysing weekly COVID-19 case data collected from the disease's first reported case on March 3, 2020, to April 22, 2021, in 278 municipalities in Mainland Portugal, we demonstrate that the complexity of infection risks varies based on the outbreak's severity, suggesting that a single model definition is insufficient to explain the multifaceted underlying phenomena. This study employs a dynamic, conditionally specified Gaussian Markov rando
