Retinal amyloid peptides and complement factor H in transgenic models of Alzheimer's disease.

Murine transgenic models of Alzheimer's disease (Tg-AD) have been useful to analyze the contribution of β-amyloid precursor protein (βAPP), Aβ42 peptide deposition, and the proinflammatory mechanisms that characterize Alzheimer-type neuropathology. In this report, we have studied the levels of βAPP, Aβ40 and Aβ42 peptide, as well as the innate immune and inflammatory response-regulator complement factor H in the brain and retina in four different Tg-AD models including Tg2576, PSAPP, 3xTg-AD, and 5xFAD. Aged, symptomatic 5xFAD mice showed the highest retinal abundance of Aβ42 peptides and the

Association of vaginal delivery efforts with retinal disease in women with type I diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the second stage of labor affects the progression of retinopathy in women with type I diabetes mellitus (DM). RESEARCH AND DESIGN: The study is a secondary analysis of 192 pregnant women with type I DM who participated in an interdisciplinary diabetes in pregnancy intervention program between 1978 and 1993. Evaluation for diabetic retinopathy (DR) was performed each trimester and 6-12 weeks postpartum by the same two ophthalmologists. Women were divided into three groups: (i) elective cesarean delivery (n = 60), (ii) cesarean delivery prior to the second stage o

Verteporfin photodynamic therapy of retinal capillary hemangioblastoma in von Hippel-Lindau disease.

An 18-year-old boy presented to us with bilateral retinal hemangioblastoma and von Hippel-Lindau disease with history of cerebral capillary hemangioblastoma and embryonic cell carcinoma of left testes. The vision in the right eye was already lost with development of secondary closed angle glaucoma, optic atrophy with subsequent development of bullous keratopathy. The multiple retinal angiomatous lesions in the seeing left eye were treated with various modalities like triple freeze thaw cryopexy, focal lasers and transpupillary thermo therapy in multiple sittings over a period of almost 20 year

Ocular pathology in multiple sclerosis: retinal atrophy and inflammation irrespective of disease duration.

There has been growing interest in the use of retinal imaging for tracking disease progression in multiple sclerosis. However, systematic and detailed pathological descriptions of retinal tissue in multiple sclerosis are lacking. Graded, histological evaluations on eyes from 82 patients with multiple sclerosis and 10 subjects with other neurological diseases, with immunohistochemistry on a subset, were performed and correlated with clinical and pathological findings. Multiple sclerosis cases demonstrated evidence of retinal atrophy and inflammation even in late-stage disease. Retinal ganglion

Sudden-onset blindness in sickle cell disease due to retinal artery occlusion.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare and potentially devastating cause of acute blindness in sickle cell disease (SCD) that is unique compared to classic sickle retinopathy. Few details related to this complication in SCD are known, including its risk factors, pathogenesis, presentation, treatment and outcomes. We present three patients with SCD and retinal artery occlusion. The overall variability in clinical presentation, treatment and prognosis reported in the literature underscores the need for a greater understanding of these factors as they relate to this complication in SCD

Correlation between retinal morphological and functional findings and clinical severity in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: To measure the parapapillary retinal nerve fiber layer and macular thickness and macular volume in vivo and to evaluate whether retinal structural changes and visual cortical responses may be related to the clinical severity of the PD. METHODS: We included 17 patients with Parkinson's disease and 11 healthy subjects of a similar age. Unified Parkinson's disease rating scale scores in Parkinson's disease and control subjects were assessed for clinical evaluation. The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, macular thickness and volume were measured by commercially available optical co

Diagnosis of plus disease in retinopathy of prematurity using Retinal Image multiScale Analysis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate a semiautomated image analysis software package, Retinal Image multiScale Analysis (RISA), for the diagnosis of plus disease in preterm infants with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: Digital images of the posterior pole showing both disc and macula in preterm infants with ROP were analyzed with an enhanced version of RISA. Venules (N = 106) and arterioles (N = 44) were identified, and integrated curvature, diameter, and tortuosity of the vessels were calculated. After the RISA calculations were completed, the origins of the vessels were determined to be 32 eyes i

Spontaneous regression of retinal angiomatous lesions in v. Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL).

BACKGROUND: Very little documentation of spontaneous regression of an angiomatous retinal lesion in v. Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) exists. It is commonly believed that a spontaneous change of hemangiomas into fibrotic lesions occurred. PATIENTS/METHODS: Follow-up examinations of four patients with VHL in the Freiburg VHL study were carried out. RESULTS: A 16-year-old girl revealed a vascular lesion at the border of the optic disc. Control examination nine years later revealed complete spontaneous regression of the retinal vascular changes. A slight retinal vascular change at the superior bor

[The electroretinographic assessment of the efficacy of retinal electrostimulation by the method of biocontrolled chronophysiotherapy in Stargardt's disease].

The biocontrolled chronoelectrotherapy for Stardgardt's disease has some advantage over the traditional electrostimulation techniques. There is an increase in the efficacy with a lower number of sessions, adverse reactions are not observed, and the risk for overdosage decreases. The technique proposed normalizes the rhythms of blood flow and it may be useful for the chronoelectrostimulation of the paired eye in abnormalities of or injury to the other eye. Its therapeutical efficiency is controlled by the changes occurring in the ERG b-wave.

Retinal phakomata associated with cerebral astrocytoma. An incomplete form of Bourneville-Pringle disease?

We report on a 21-year-old, male patient with unilateral retinal phakomata associated with histologically proved cerebral astrocytoma. The patient had presented with bilateral loss of vision and a left-sided hemiparesis. Ophthalmoscopy showed bilateral optic nerve atrophy, multiple punched-out areas of depigmentation and astrocytic hamartomata in the right eye. Despite the absence of classic signs of Bourneville-Pringle disease such as adenoma sebaceum, epilepsy and mental retardation, a strongly presumptive diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis could be made. This unusual case demonstrates that ret

X-linked recessive primary retinal dysplasia is linked to the Norrie disease locus.

X-linked primary retinal dysplasia (PRD) refers to an abnormal proliferation of retinal tissue causing either its neural elements or its glial tissue to form folds, giving rise to gliosis. A Jewish family of oriental origin was previously reported by Godel and Goodman, in which a total of five males suffer from different degrees of blindness. The authors postulated that the described findings are distinguished from Norrie disease, since in this case no clinical findings, other than those associated with the eyes, were noticed in the affected males. In addition, two of the carrier females exhib

Early identification of retinal angiomas in a large kindred von Hippel-Lindau disease.

We studied prospectively a large kindred afflicted with von Hippel-Lindau disease. Of 111 members examined ophthalmoscopically, 14 definite retinal angiomas were found and three lesions were thought to be angiomas. The lesions found could be divided into the following three groups: (1) classic angiomas, (2) atypical angiomas, and (3) lesions indicative of early angiomas. A correlation between increasing age, systemic evidence of disease, and size and appearance of angiomas was found.
