Recent studies have shown that Connexin43 mimetic peptide (Cx43 MP) can prevent secondary damage following retinal ischaemic and inflammatory disorders by blocking uncontrolled Cx43 hemichannel opening. However, limitations in peptide stability and the presence of various intraocular barriers limit efficient retinal delivery in the clinical setting. The present study aimed to achieve targeted and sustained peptide delivery to the retina by encapsulating Cx43 MP into hyaluronic acid (HA) coated albumin nanoparticles (NPs). Intraocular biodistribution, particle retention, retinal targeting, and

BACKGROUND: Little is known about retinal vascular lesions underlying hemorrhage in the acute phase of branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).
CASE: A 64-year-old woman presented with a decrease in visual acuity of ten-day duration in her left eye.
OBSERVATIONS: At the initial examination, her left fundus showed the typical appearance of BRVO, including retinal bleeding and soft exudates in the lower half of the fundus, after the arteriovenous crossing. Fluorescein angiography showed no detail in the retinal vessels, which were occluded by retinal bleeding. However, in the early phase of indoc…

A failure of human foveal development only occurs in two genetically determined conditions; aniridia (Pax6 mutation) and albinism (tyrosinase mutation). The chiasmatic pathways from this region are disrupted in albinism and central retinal blood vessel patterns are abnormal. It is assumed that these three abnormalities have a common mechanism. Here we investigate whether similar abnormalities are present in subjects with aniridia. Using fundus photographs it is shown that abnormal blood vessel patterns are present in aniridia, but these significantly differ from those in albinos. Using electro

BACKGROUND: Despite the common association between bilateral retinal hemorrhage and shaken baby syndrome (SBS), unilateral retinal hemorrhage does not necessarily exclude this diagnosis. This study used computational simulations to elucidate the biomechanical phenomena within the eye under asymmetrical shaking forces.
METHODS: Finite element analysis (FEA) incorporating the vitreous, vitreoretinal interface, retinal layers, and retinal vessels was performed under asymmetrical shaking conditions. To assess the stress-strain response at the preretinal, intraretinal, and subretinal locations, we…

BACKGROUND: In severe Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR), fibrovascular membrane (FVM) causes macular tractional retinal detachment (MTRD) which threatens vision and eventually leads to blindness. Here we present a case of separation between the inner and outer retina in tractional retinoschisis, induced during intraoperative FVM delamination.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old woman presented with PDR in the right eye, characterized by a combined FVM and retinal detachment, for which a vitrectomy was performed. Multiple holes, large retinal detachment extending to all quadrants, and whit

PURPOSE: To describe a patient with incontinentia pigmenti (IP) and Raynaud's phenomenon (RP).
OBSERVATIONS: A 5 year-old girl with history of IP was noted to have RP. Visual acuity was unaffected in both eyes, and fundus examination demonstrated regressed peripheral neovascularization. Photos of the patient's hands demonstrated pale discoloration associated with exposure to cold.
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: IP, known to affect small cerebral and retinal blood vessels, can also affect the small blood vessels in the extremities, resulting in secondary RP.

PURPOSE: To report a case of post-streptococcal retinal vasculitis.
DESIGN: Review of a case.
METHODS: Review of patient chart and fluorescein angiography.
RESULTS: A 17 year old African American female presented with moderate vitritis and macular edema in the right eye and retinal vessel sheathing in both eyes.
CONCLUSIONS: Although CNS vasculitis is well recognized as a post-streptococcal syndrome, this case illustrates that retinal vasculitis can also occur in this setting, and can resolve with oral steroid therapy.

Occlusion of the central retinal artery with loss of all vision occurred in a 38-year-old white woman given a retrobulbar injection of betamethasone acetate and betamethasone disodium phosphate (Celestone Soluspan) for the treatment of a retrobulbar neuritis. Ophthalmoscopy revealed embolic, whitish material within several of the small retinal arterioles and capillaries. This, together with the absence of any signs of retrobulbar hemorrhage, suggested that the corticosteroid material was accidentally injected into a branch of the central retinal artery and subsequently passed into the main ves

Three patients with proved internal carotid artery occlusion and diseased external carotid artery or common carotid artery had amaurosis fugax. Evidence for retinal embolization through external carotid collaterals is retinal emboli and infarction after carotid artery manipulation, amaurosis during external carotid angiography, and relief of amaurosis by endarterectomy of this vessel. The abundance of external carotid collaterals, their size, and natural incidence are discussed. Reports clinically support embolization to the central retinal artery and ophthalmic artery through these collateral

Several optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) studies have demonstrated retinal microvascular changes in patients post-SARS-CoV-2 infection, reflecting retinal-systemic microvasculature homology. Post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) entails persistent symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this study, we investigated the retinal microvasculature in PCS patients using OCT-angiography and analysed the macular retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness via spectral domain-OCT (SD-OCT). Conducted at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, UK, this cross-sectional s

Pathological eye involvement represents a quite common finding in a broad spectrum of autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs). Ocular signs, often occur as early manifestations in ARDs, ranging from symptoms related to the mild dry eye disease to sight-threatening pathologies, linked to the immune response against retinal and choroidal vessels. Retinovascular damage driven by markedly inflammatory reactivity need a prompt diagnosis and treatment. Immune-complexes formation, complement activation and antibody-mediated endothelial damage seem to play a key role, particularly, in microvascular damag

PURPOSE: Recent advances in retinal imaging have revealed vasculostructural alterations in fellow eyes of patients with Coats disease, thereby challenging the traditional concept of Coats disease as a strictly unilateral disorder. To further explore the phenotype of this retinal disease, this study investigated whether subclinical vascular changes can be detected in fellow eyes using Widefield Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (WF-OCT-A).
METHODS: This trial prospectively recruited Coats disease patients as well as age- and sex-matched healthy controls from University Hospital Münster.
