To estimate the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica infection in sheep in the León province (northwestern Spain), we conducted a survey between October 1992 and May 1993. A total of 767 samples of feces and serum were collected from sheep over 1 year of age belonging to 152 flocks randomly selected from the 4 natural regions of León province. Paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) was suspected in a flock of approximately 1000 sheep after weight losses and scouring had increased in adult animals despite repeated anthelmintic treatment. A total of 10 ewes showing clinical symptoms were submitted to laboratory examination. Gross pathological and histological examination of tissue samples rendered results compatible with Johne's disease in all 10 ewes. Samples of liver tissue from sheep (n = 231), which were send to the Institute on Animal Nutrition, School of Veterinary Sciences Hannover, were analyzed for copper; the results were evaluated in reference to animal's age and race. The conjunctival sacs of 100 healthy adult ewes and 20 lambs and 76 adult ewes affected by ovine keratoconjunctivitis (OKC) were examined microbiologically. Branhamella ovis was the only organism regularly isolated from healthy ewes and lambs, Mycoplasma conjunctivae was isolated from the conjunctival sac of nine ewes but its occurrence was not associated with clinical signs of ovine keratoconjunctivitis. Mycoplasma conjunctivae and Branhamella ovis were isolated significantly more often from eyes affected by OKC than from unaffected eyes.

Indirect immunofluorescence and peroxidase-antiperoxidase methods were used to analyze the development and distribution of gastrin-producing cells in 24 embryos and fetuses (at 26-120 days of prenatal life) of sheep and in 10 newborn sheep. The present results show that 'synaptic' bodies (SB) are a heterogeneous group of organelles in the pineal glands of Artiodactyla. Basically, rod-like (ribbons) and sphere-like (spherules) SB can be distinguished. In the pig small numbers of both 'synaptic' ribbons (SR) and 'synaptic' spherules (SS) are found. We have investigated the role of gastrin in the development of the gastrointestinal tract during the latter part of gestation in fetal sheep. We surgically removed the major source of gastrin, the gastric (abomasal) antrum, from five fetuses at 90 days of gestation.
