Ipsilateral fractures of the acromion and coracoid processes of the scapula.

A fracture of the acromion and coracoid processes of scapula is rarely seen in the outpatient clinic, due to the acromion's anatomical position and shape, as well as the strong ligaments and muscles that are attached to it. These fractures are caused by either direct or indirect high-energy trauma injuries to the shoulder joint, leading to severe pain and a grossly restricted range of motion. Several acromial classifications were reported, but this type of longitudinal plane fracture of the acromion process in our case is yet to be described in the current literature. We present a rare combina

Effects of short malunion of the clavicle on in vivo scapular kinematics.

BACKGROUND: Short malunion of the clavicle after fracture can change scapular kinematics and alter clinical outcome. However, the effects of malunion on kinematics and outcomes remains poorly understood because there have been no in vivo studies measuring changes during active motion with malunion. This study aimed to measure and to compare in vivo 3-dimensional (3D) scapular kinematics between normal shoulders and shoulders with short malunion using 3D-2-dimensional model image registration techniques. METHODS: Fifteen patients with clavicle fracture who had been treated conservatively were

[Bilateral posterior shoulder dislocation with associated reverse Hill-Sachs lesions after electrical injury].

After workers suffer electric shock, the ankylosis and contraction of muscle groups around the shoulder joint are more likely to lead to posterior dislocation and fracture, of which 80% are complicated with reverse Hill-Sachs injury of humeral head. This paper reports a case of bilateral posterior dislocation of shoulder joint combined with Hill-Sachs injury caused by electric shock in the Department of Orthopedics, Affiliated Huzhou Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine in August 2020. The diagnosis of left posterior shoulder dislocation was clear, and the diagnosis of right poster

Arthroscopic Management of the Stiff Shoulder.

Shoulder stiffness affects a diverse population of patients suffering a decrease in function and shoulder pain. Arthroscopic management of this debilitating spectrum of pathology is a safe and effective course of action in cases recalcitrant to nonoperative therapy. Arthroscopic management of the stiff shoulder has been reported to be effective in the treatment of stiffness due to adhesive capsulitis, birth palsy, stiffness in the setting of rotator cuff tears, and osteoarthritis in the posttraumatic patient, in the postoperative patient, and in the throwing athlete. Arthroscopic management is

Superior compared with anteroinferior plating for mid-shaft fractures of the clavicle : a meta-analysis.

AIMS: Superior plating has long been the routine surgical approach for mid-shaft fractures of the clavicle. However, concerns about the prominence of the plate and neurological risk have led to an increased interest in anteroinferior plating. Whether anteroinferior plating offers comparable or improved outcomes without compromising the stability of fixation has been investigated in several studies. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the clinical outcomes, complications, and complication-related outcomes following superior compared with anteroinferior plating of mid-shaft fractures o

Scapular Alignment Restoration After Posterior Fixation of Displaced Scapular Fractures.

Background and Objectives: The surgical management of displaced scapular fractures remains controversial, particularly regarding the importance of restoring scapular alignment. This study evaluated radiologic restoration and clinical outcomes following posterior fixation of displaced scapular fractures, with a particular focus on correction of lateral border offset (LBO) and angular deformity. Materials and Methods: This retrospective case series included 20 patients who underwent posterior open reduction and internal fixation for displaced scapular fractures between 2017 and 2024 with a minim

Clinical and Radiological Outcome Assessment following Coracoclavicular Reconstruction with Endobutton and Fibertape for Neer's Type II Lateral End Clavicle Fracture: A Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes following coracoclavicular (CC) reconstruction with the endobutton for Neer type 2 lateral end clavicle fracture. Clavicular fracture is one of the commonest injuries encountered routinely in orthopedic practice, with an incidence ranging from 44 to 66% of all fractures. Based on the location of fractures they may be in the middle third, being most common or the lateral and medial thirds being least common. Fractures of the lateral end of the clavicle are troublesome to manage given their instability and ligamentous disruption an

The anatomy of the glenohumeral ligamentous complex and its contribution to anterior shoulder stability.

One hundred four enbalmed cadaver shoulders were evaluated. With a dorsal approach we opened the dorsal capsule after resecting the infraspinatus and teres minor muscles. For reaching the anterior capsule and the glenohumeral ligaments, the humeral head was resected. In this way we could quantify and qualify the glenohumeral ligaments and classify the synovial recesses based on the classification system of DePalma into type I to VI. Secondary signs of shoulder instability were documented. The superior glenohumeral ligament was missing in 6 (5.8%) shoulders, the middle glenohumeral ligament in

The Role of Arthroscopy in Contemporary Glenoid Fossa Fracture Fixation.

Glenoid fossa fractures are rare injuries accounting for 10 to 29% of all intra-articular scapula fractures. They are usually the result of high-energy trauma, and concomitant injuries are not uncommon. Patients with glenoid fractures are admitted with shoulder pain and restricted range of motion. Although shoulder plain radiographs could establish the diagnosis, a computed tomography scan is necessary to adequately define the fracture pattern and characteristics. The most commonly used classification system is that of Ideberg (modified by Goss), which includes five glenoid fossa fracture type

Nonoperative treatment of primary anterior shoulder dislocation in patients forty years of age and younger. a prospective twenty-five-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: During 1978 and 1979, we initiated a prospective multicenter study to evaluate the results of nonoperative treatment of primary anterior shoulder dislocation. In the current report, we present the outcome after twenty-five years. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty-five patients (257 shoulders) with an age of twelve to forty years who had a primary anterior shoulder dislocation were managed with immobilization (achieved by tying the arm to the torso with use of a bandage) or without immobilization. All 227 living patients (229 shoulders) completed the follow-up questionnaire, and 214 p

External Fixation of Clavicle Fractures with Comminution or in Highly Active Patients.

Conservative treatment of clavicle fractures has the disadvantage of substantial pain and discomfort, whereas internal fixation of these fractures has a high rate of non-union. External fixation is an alternative method permitting early mobilization without disrupting the surrounding soft tissue envelope. These are extremely beneficial in young, athletic and highly functional patients as well as in patients with comminuted fractures. This was a retrospective study of 17 consecutive patients with clavicle fractures. Thirteen of them were young, athletic patients while the remaining four were no

Surgical fixation of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures with precontoured plates in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The use of plate fixation to treat displaced midshaft clavicular fractures in adults reduces complications and residual shoulder disability. New features of the precontoured locking plates have been shown to reduce the need for hardware removal in adults. There is a lack of studies evaluating surgical fixation of displaced clavicular fractures with precontoured plates in adolescents. We evaluate outcomes and complications of adolescents with displaced midshaft clavicular fractures treated with precontoured locking plates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 40 adolescents with displaced midsha

Comparison of locking plates and intramedullary nails in treatment of three-part or four-part proximal humeral neck fractures in elderly population: A randomized trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Locking plate and intramedullary nail are two commonly applied methods to fix proximal humeral fractures. There are limited randomized studies that specifically evaluate the results of proximal humeral neck fractures with three-part or four-part treated by locking plates or intramedullary nails. Our goal was to compare functional outcomes, complications, and imaging features between the two groups. METHODS: This single-center, prospective, randomized controlled test will be conducted in Tengzhou Central People's Hospital. Patients with these conditions will be included: age betwee

Reconstruction of radial capitellar fractures using fine-threaded implants (FFS).

Fractures of the capitulum humeri are rare and challenging injuries to the elbow and outcome results are limited to case series, often with different fixation devices. This article aims to present 15 patients with a fracture of the capitulum humeri treated with the same implant, fine-threaded Kirschner wires (FFS). Besides range of motion and grip strength, outcome measurements include the following scores: the Mayo Elbow Performance index (MEPI); the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons' Elbow Assessment (ASES) Form; the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire; and the
