A 22-year-old Hispanic man with sickle cell trait presented with blurred vision, double vision, and pain with OD movement. MRI demonstrated an extra-axial mass centered around the temporal bone with extension into the middle cranial fossa and lateral aspect of the extra-conal right orbit, and mass effect on the lateral rectus muscle. Biopsy of the lesion was consistent with renal medullary carcinoma. CT chest/abdomen/pelvis confirmed a primary tumor in the right kidney. No additional metastases were found. Renal medullary carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive malignancy, which almost exclusiv…

This communication describes a very simple, rapid and inexpensive point-of-care diagnostic test for sickle cell disease (SCD) that can conclusively differentiate between blood samples from normal healthy individuals, sickle cell trait carriers and SCD patients using the characteristic blood stain patterns produced by each sample on paper.

Recent data strongly suggest an increased risk of venous thromboembolism in subjects with sickle cell disease and to a lesser extent, sickle cell trait. However, most studies have been retrospective, case-control or cross-sectional based on data obtained from administrative databases. More data from adequately powered prospective studies that include matched controls are needed to definitely establish the link between venous thromboembolism during pregnancy and sickle hemoglobin disorders. Similarly, there remains a need for properly designed randomized control trials to establish the safety o…

A previous healthy 35-year-old man was found dead in his truck. Shortly before death he merely complained of influenza-like symptoms. The histological examination revealed evidence of a massive accumulation of sickle cells in smaller blood vessels. After molecular genetic analysis, the preliminary diagnosis of "sickle cell disease" was finally changed to the diagnosis of a sickle cell trait. It is presumed that an epileptic attack which also has to be considered as a concurring cause of death, precipitated sickling of the erythrocytes and led to a fatal sickle cell crisis.

The sickle cell trait-asymptomatic carriage is frequent in people originating from sub-Saharan Africa. Several host factors (including sickle cell anemia) have been previously reported to act upon the course of HIV disease. We studied the progression of infection in a cohort of African patients heterozygous for the sickle hemoglobin gene and harboring normal hemoglobin genes. No significant difference was evidenced between the two groups from this preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Haemoglobinopathies, including sickle-cell disease and thalassaemia syndrome, are a group of blood diseases mostly confined to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The spectrum of haemoglobin variants is a group of commonly encountered genetic conditions, with an average frequency of 19.32% in Orissa, varying from region to region and from community to community depending upon the type of mating practices.
AIM: For the first time, the infant mortality rate (IMR), i.e. the number of deaths under 1 year of age (in a given year) per thousand live births in a particular area

Naked Eye Single Tube Redcell Osmotic Fragility Test (NESTROFT) was applied to 110 patients of suspected cases of beta-Thalassemia and other haemoglobinopathies. Out of 110 patients, 10 cases were of beta-Thalassemia major, 35 of Thalassemia minor and 65 of sickle cell disease. The study was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of NESTROFT as a screening test for beta-Thalassemia trait. The test was successful in detecting 34/35 subjects with beta-Thalassemia trait. Sensitivity of the test was 97.1% and specificity was 100%. The test was positive in detecting other haemoglobinopathies lik

401 subjects of both sexes and with ages ranging from 5 to 50 years were investigated for haemoglobin phenotypes by starch-gel electrophoresis. Concentrations of blood haemoglobin, serum total protein, albumin, globulin, total cholesterol and serum transaminases (SGOT and SGPT) were determined to examine the influence of the sickle cell gene on these biochemical parameters. The carriers of sickle cell trait had higher levels of SGOT and SGPT compared to those with haemoglobin A and homozygous sickle cell haemoglobin. The carriers of homozygous sickle cell had lower levels of haemoglobin, total…

The populations infected with malaria have developed genetic defense mechanisms in order to protect themselves against the most serious complications of this disease. Those mechanisms have been associated from the perspective of co-adaptive process with some genetic diseases widely present in humans as sickle-cell disease, sickle cell trait and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD). Biochemically, polymorphic mutations at the erythrocyte level have been widely studied, however there is no clear statement of the mechanisms used for resistance against the causative agent of malaria…

Structural abnormalities in erythrocyte membrane are more and more claimed as a determinant factor in the sickle cell disease pathogenesis. This being would have been provided by a new anionic phospholipids distribution and conformation. Phosphatidyl-serine exposing and phosphatidic acid enhancing would induce specific immunoglobulins synthesis. In this study, assessment of antiphospholipid antibodies prevalence was carried out among sickle cell trait patients (n = 35) and homozygous patients (n = 59) as compared to healthy subjects (n = 39). Antiphospholipid antibodies, assayed by ELISA proce…

Sickle cell disease (SCD) and sickle cell trait (SCT) are found most frequently in individuals of African, Middle Eastern and Indian ethnicity. Population migration has made this disease more common worldwide, including Ireland. We present an overview of this disease, focusing on management and practical implications for dental practitioners.

This article explores Sickle Cell Disease and Sickle Cell Trait. These are hereditary conditions that affect thousands of people in the UK and abroad. The disease tends to occur in people of Afro-Caribbean or Mediterranean descent. The specific Pre-, Peri- and postoperative care of affected patients is examined.

An electrophoretic study of haemolysates from 1350 subjects from the indigenous population of Libya was carried out to find the incidence of abnormal haemoglobins and thalassaemia. Sickle cell disease was detected in five (0.37%), sickle cell trait in 61 (4.51%), sickle cell thalassaemia in three (0.21%), homozygous betathalassaemia in 16 (1.20%), heterozygous delta-beta thalassaemia in 25 (1.85%) and heterozygous beta-thalassaemia in 105 (7.77%). The incidence of the sickle cell gene is low, but that of the thalassaemic gene appears to be high in the Libyan population which is racially mixed,…

To examine the relationship between gross hematuria and sickle cell disorders, all patients admitted to Grady Memorial Hospital with the diagnosis of a sickle cell disorder during a 14-month period were reviewed. Of 115 such patients, 65% had sickle cell disease and 35% had sickle cell trait. None of the former but seven of the latter group had gross hematuria. Mean age of the seven was 30 years. Comprehensive examinations and laboratory studies showed that all were free of concomitant disease. Physical findings, diagnostic modalities, and treatment were reviewed. Findings suggest that conserv…

The national prevalence of major sickle cell (MSC) syndromes and sickle cell trait was 1.35% and 19.43%, respectively. The prevalence ranged from 1.77% to 2.56% for MSS in four departments and from 20.5% to 25.8% for the sickle cell trait in six other departments.
CONCLUSION: Data on homozygous sickle cell disease remain consiste …
