Glutathione- and light-controlled generation of singlet oxygen for triggering drug release in mesoporous silica nanoparticles.

A combined stimulus-responsive photosensitiser and drug release system based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles was prepared. This nanoplatform encapsulated molecules of zinc(ii) phthalocyanine substituted with a glutathione-cleavable 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonate quencher and doxorubicin linked via a singlet-oxygen-cleavable 9,10-dialkoxyanthracene linker. In the presence of glutathione (in mM range) and upon irradiation (λ > 610 nm), the phthalocyanine units were activated by detaching from the quenching component to emit fluorescence and generate singlet oxygen. The latter subsequently cleave

Magnetic-Assisted Methylene Blue-Intercalated Amplified dsDNA for Polarity-Switching-Mode Photoelectrochemical Aptasensing.

Organic dyes are typically applied as photosensitizers in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells but have not been reported in polarity-reversal-mode PEC sensors with excellent sensitivity and accuracy. Herein, an elegant and robust PEC biosensor for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) has been designed by photocurrent polarity switching of CdTe quantum dots (QDs), which is obtained by embedding methylene blue (MB) into amplified double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) anchored to the superparamagnetic Fe3O4@SiO2. The target-triggered Exo III-assisted cyclic amplification strategy and in situ magnetic enrichment ena

[Effect of 1-(chloromethyl)silatrane on biochemical indices in the tissue of experimental gastric ulcer].

It has been demonstrated in rats with experimental gastric ulcer that 1-(chloromethyl) silatrane intensifies the development of granulation-fibrous tissue and favours optimization of the ratio of collagens and glycosaminoglycans, the main connective tissue biopolymers. Furthermore, 1-(chloromethyl) silatrane produces a more pronounced effect on hexosamine-containing glycoproteins in the ulcer tissue as compared with methyluracil and oxyferriscorbon. At the same time, judging by the time course of sialoproteins, the antiulcerous drugs, methyluracil and oxyferriscorbon, are much more effective a

A nanowire-based fluorescent sensor for detecting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) dyshomeostasis in cell body and synapse of Alzheimer's disease (AD) cell model.

Revealing the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in neuron's cell body and synapse with high spatial resolution is very important not only for clarifying the pathways between the fluctuation of H2O2 and neurotoxicity of amyloid-β oligomers (AβOs), but also for further understanding the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Herein, a single nanowire-based H2O2 fluorescent sensor has been designed and developed by covalently modifying H2O2-responsive molecules onto the surface of silicon nanowires (SiNWs). The sensor features high spatial resolution, excellent selectivity and high sensitivit

Innovative oral formulations with silicon nanoparticles for co-delivery of poorly soluble drugs and hydrogen gas.

Nanomedicine offers new opportunities for combination therapy by co-delivering multiple active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for improved convenience and synergistic effects. Recently, hydrogen gas (H2) has gained attention for its antioxidant effects suitable for treating a wide variety of conditions, including central nervous system disorders. Previous approaches have combined drugs and H2 delivery via separate administrations. Porous silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) offer a single platform for both drug delivery and H2 generation through water reduction under mildly alkaline conditions. I

Design and evaluation of a dicationic ionic liquid-embedded C18 stationary phase for mixed-mode chromatography.

A novel mixed-mode stationary phase, Sil-DIL-C18, was successfully developed by covalently embedding a dicationic dipyridinium ionic liquid within the C18 chains grafted to the silica. The chromatographic retention was systematically evaluated under varying mobile-phase composition, salt concentration, and pH. Compared with conventional single-mode Extend-C18 and HILIC Plus columns, Sil-DIL-C18 exhibited markedly superior resolution of both hydrophobic solutes (alkylbenzenes and PAHs) and polar/ionizable compounds (nucleosides, sulfonamides, alkaloids, organic acids, and antipyretic analgesics

Volatile profile of postharvest hardy kiwifruits treated with chitosan-silica nanocomposite coatings.

Chitosan (CTS) is a natural polysaccharide derived from the deacetylation of chitin. Chitosan-based coatings are widely used for the preservation of hardy kiwifruits. However, the effect of chitosan-based coating on fruit flavor during ripening is rarely reported. In this study, the postharvest qualities of hardy kiwifruits were investigated using chitosan coating and chitosan-silica nanoparticle coating (CTS-SiNPs) during storage at 25°C and 4°C. Physicochemical analyses showed that chitosan coating extended the shelf-life by delaying ripening and maintaining higher quality than uncoated frui

A Double-Layer Microneedle Patch Containing Methylprednisolone and Upadacitinib-Loaded Mesoporous Silica Nanocomposites for Psoriasis Treatment.

Psoriasis is promoted by signaling through the IL-23/IL-17 pathway. Existing oral or topical treatment regimens can hardly balance acute flare-ups with long-term maintenance. A dual-layer soluble microneedle (MN) that combines methylprednisolone (MP) and upadacitinib (UPA) was developed using an immediate-release-controlled-release spatiotemporal program to achieve rapid anti-inflammatory effects and sustained immunosuppression. The outer layer contains mechanically robust gelatin-polyvinyl alcohol (Gel-PVA) hydrogel loaded with MP, while the inner layer contains light-curable methyl acrylate

Environment-responsive antibacterial paper based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/ SiO2 coating for on-demand ClO2 release in fruit preservation.

Antibacterial packaging can effectively preserve postharvest fruits by reducing microbial contamination. In this study, an environment-responsive ClO2-releasing Antibacterial paper has been developed, achieved by coating the base paper with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), nano silica and NaClO2. The release of ClO2 was sustained and regulated by the environmental humidity and CO2 concentration. The coating formulation was optimized through single-factor experiments, yielding in a NaClO2 loading efficiency of 78.8 %. Although the coating treatment decreased the tensile strength of paper, it notably im

Advanced Exosome Isolation through Electrophoretic Oscillation-Assisted Tangent-Flow Ultrafiltration with a PVDF-Fiber-Coated SiNx Nanofilter.

This study introduces a comprehensive approach to enhancing SiNx nanofilters for exosome isolation from bovine milk using the electrophoretic oscillation-assisted tangent-flow ultrafiltration (EPOTF) process. Reinforcing the nanofilter with electro-spun poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) fibers significantly improved durability under high-pressure conditions, withstanding nearly 2.8 times greater pressures than nonreinforced nanofilters. The PVDF-fiber-coated nanofilters achieved a flow rate of over 70 mL min-1, compared to just 25 mL min-1 for nonreinforced nanofilters. A filter housing system

Interference of Parenteral Nutrition Components in Silicon-Mediated Protection Against Aluminum Bioaccumulation.

Aluminum and silicon are contaminants found in formulations used to prepare parenteral nutrition. Both elements are leached from glass containers, mainly during the heating cycle for sterilization. Insoluble and biologically inactive species of hydroxyaluminosilicates have been shown to form in solutions containing Al and Si. Therefore, this interaction may play an important role in protecting the body against Al toxicity. In this study, the bioavailability of Al in the presence of Si, calcium gluconate (Gluc.), and potassium phosphate (Phosf.) was investigated in rats. The rats were divided i

A visualized ratiometric fluorescence sensing system for copper ions based on gold nanoclusters/perovskite quantum dot@SiO2 nanocomposites.

Excessive copper ions (Cu2+) cause serious environmental pollution and even endanger the health of organisms. Fluorescence chemosensing materials are widely used in the detection of metal ions due to their simple operation and high sensitivity. In this study, SiO2-encapsulated single perovskite quantum dot (PQD@SiO2) core-shell nanostructures which show strong, stable, and green fluorescence are synthesized and composited with gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) which show Cu2+-sensitive and red light-emitting fluorescence to obtain a visualized ratiometric fluorescence sensor (AuNCs/PQD@SiO2) for the d

Enhanced osteogenesis and angiogenesis of calcium phosphate cement incorporated with zinc silicate by synergy effect of zinc and silicon ions.

Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) with good injectability and osteoconductivity plays important roles in bone grafting application. Much attention has been paid to achieve multifunctionality through incorporating trace elements into CPC. Silicon and zinc can be used as additives to endow CPC with biological functions of osteogenesis, angiogenesis and anti-osteoclastogenesis. In this study, zinc and silicate ions were co-incorporated into CPC through mixing with submicron zinc silicate (Zn2SiO4, ZS) to obtain zinc silicate-modified CPCs (ZS/CPCs) with different contents. The results revealed that
