A titanium membrane was used to isolate the Schneiderian membrane of the bony walls of the sinus so that we could investigate their role on the formation of bone after sinus lifts compared with a control group (conventional raising of the sinus floor) in which we did not use a membrane to isolate any area. Three canine models of lifting the sinus floor using the lateral window technique were established: conventional lifting of the floor (control group), raising of the floor with the mucosa shielded (mucosal shielding group), and raising of the floor with the bony wall shielded (bony wall shie

The aim of this study was to introduce a modified endoscopic lift of the floor of the maxillary sinus in Beagles. Twelve operations (bilateral and randomly chosen) were done in 6 Beagles each in the test group (modified endoscopic operation), and the control group, in which the operation was done with an osteotome. All operations were evaluated by two indices of safety (perforation of the sinus membrane and nasal bleeding) and 3 effective indices (the intraoperative height after lifting, volume of bone grafts, and dislocation of the sinus grafts). The sinus membrane was not perforated and ther

This study was conducted to evaluate implant survival with regard to effects of sinus membrane perforation that occurred during osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE). The study group consisted of 42 patients with edentulous posterior maxilla. Implants placement combined with OSFE without a grafting material was performed. All patients underwent a radiographic examination before surgery, to reveal the periimplant bone formation immediately after implant placement and 6 to 33 months later. Sinus membrane perforations were detected in 6 patients, and 6 implants were inserted in 6 sinus sites. No

PURPOSE: Implant-supported rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior maxilla often necessitates maxillary sinus surgery to augment existing bone volumes. Recent systematic reviews have reported implant survival rates above 90% following sinus elevation. However, statistical assessment of the effect of anatomic factors, implant design and surface, individual risk factors, and complications related to sinus floor elevation procedures on implant survival through analyzing patient data has not yet been performed. The aim of this study is to identify risk factors that might affect implant survival f

BACKGROUND: Many models have been suggested for surgical training in sinus floor elevation (SFE), but information on key features that provide feedback to the trainee is scarce. The aim of this study is to compare the thickness of the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus (TLWMS) and the thickness of the Schneiderian membrane (TSM) between an animal model and the human standard.
METHODS: The observational study used 20 fresh lamb heads. Cone-beam computed tomography (CT) was performed for recording the following: TLWMS, sinus lateral floor width, distance from the lateral border of the anteropo

Chronic sinusitis develops when the ostiomeatal complex becomes stenosed by the swelling of the sinus mucosa. Previously, the Caldwell-Luc method was performed for the treatment of chronic sinusitis. But postoperative complications, such as discomfort of the buccal skin and recurrence of sinusitis, frequently occurred after the operation. Today, endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) has become widely used for the treatment of chronic sinusitis. The features of ESS allow for the restoration of the physical function of the sinus membrane and preservation of the physiological environment of the sinus. T

A 20-year-old edentulous woman, who was previously treated with the shave of the inferior border of the mandible and malar prominent region for aesthetic facial contouring, was selected for full mouth rehabilitation of the maxillomandibular region. The patient was treated with bilateral open sinus lifting through a lateral approach in the posterior of the maxilla and an onlay bone graft with lateral ramus as a donor site in the mandible anterior. Eight implants in the maxilla and 7 in the mandible were inserted, and implant-supported prostheses were fabricated. The 18-month follow-up showed go

Clinical cases in mineral and bone metabolism : the official journal of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism, and Skeletal Diseases2015eng
Autologous bone, for its osteoconductive, osteoinductive and osteogenetic properties, has been considered to be the gold standard for maxillary sinus augmentation procedures. Autograft procedures bring also some disadvantages: sometimes the limited amount of available intraoral bone makes necessary to obtain bone from an extraoral site, and this carries an associated morbidity. To overcome this problem we started using homologous freeze-dried bone in maxillary sinus augmentation procedures. This bone is industrially processed with γ-irradiation to eliminate its disease transmission potential a

INTRODUCTION: Implant rehabilitation in the posterior maxilla with critical residual bone height (≤6 mm) requires maxillary sinus floor augmentation techniques, although controversy exists regarding the necessity of heterologous bone grafts. Although some protocols consider grafting essential for osteogenesis, recent evidence suggests that modern implants, through a "tent-pole" effect, may eliminate this need, thereby avoiding its drawbacks (increased cost, surgical time, and risk of complications such as sinusitis). This retrospective study compares implant survival and complications between …

AIM: To evaluate the determinants of early implant failure after sinus augmentation (SA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study of implants placed after SA between 2016 and 2021 in eight centres across Germany. We included a total of 129 implants that were lost within 12 months after placement (cases) and 273 implants that were not lost within 12 months (controls). Multivariable logistic regression models were fitted to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals for the association of various clinical and radiographic parameters with the risk of early im
