BACKGROUND: Micropore particle technology (MPPT) is a topical wound treatment. It is a passive immunotherapy, acting via the skin and wound microbiome without the use of antimicrobial action. In a general patient population, it removed wound infections 60% and initiated tissue regeneration 50% quicker than antibiotics and antiseptics. As MPPT supports the immune system, the aim was to confirm that MPPT is also effective in immunocompromised individuals. People with spinal cord injury (SCI) are immunodeficient due to their injury and not an underlying disease and recruit 50% fewer immune cells

Research shows that the microbiome of the skin is present as an active contributor to wound healing processes by moving past its historical infection-related function. The review investigates how commensal and probiotic bacteria affect immunomodulation while accelerating epithelial growth, together with tissue repair processes. Researchers use modern methods to link immunological concepts with material science along with synthetic biological techniques to study engineered probiotics which transform current wound treatments. The research study represents an extensive integration of recent findi

Recent studies have found a strong correlation between gut microbiota and the risk of skin diseases and proposed a "gut-skin axis." Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of alopecia, and androgen plays an important role in its pathogenesis. It has been found that the gut microbiome is closely related to androgens; however, whether this relationship is causal or merely coincidental remains uncertain. To address this issue, Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to explore the association between gut microbiota and AGA. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have compi

Corynebacterium striatum is a Gram-positive bacterium that is straight or slightly curved and non-spore-forming. Although it was originally believed to be a part of the normal microbiome of human skin, a growing number of studies have identified it as a cause of various chronic diseases, bacteremia, and respiratory infections. However, despite its increasing importance as a pathogen, the genetic characteristics of the pathogen population, such as genomic characteristics and differences, the types of resistance genes and virulence factors carried by the pathogen and their distribution in the po

BACKGROUND: The gut-skin axis is increasingly implicated in atopic dermatitis (AD), but randomized adult studies linking clinical response to paired gut microbiome and circulating metabolite profiling remain limited. We evaluated Qing-Re-Qu-Shi formula in adults with moderate AD and examined associated microbiome and serum metabolite changes.
METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 12-week trial, 152 adults with moderate AD were assigned 1:1 to Qing-Re-Qu-Shi formula or placebo. Outcomes included Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI), SCORAD, Patient-Oriented Eczema Meas

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Spinal cord injury (SCI) affects roughly 300,000 Americans with 17,000 new cases added annually. In addition to paralysis, 60% of people with SCI develop neurogenic bowel (NB), a syndrome characterized by slow colonic transit, constipation, and chronic abdominal pain. The knowledge gap surrounding NB mechanisms after SCI means that interventions are primarily symptom-focused and largely ineffective. The goal of the present studies was to identify mechanism(s) that initiate and maintain NB after SCI as a critical first step in the development of evidence-based, novel therap

BACKGROUND: Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that negatively affects patients' quality of life. Increasing antibiotic resistance is making acne less responsive to treatment. Probiotics are live microorganisms that can provide health benefits by fighting pathogens and maintaining intestinal homeostasis and skin microbiome balance. This study investigates the effects of probiotics in the treatment of acne vulgaris.
METHODS: In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 80 patients with moderate acne were divided into two groups of 40. All patients received the same topical treatment,…

Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) regulate gene expression through diverse structural and sequence-based mechanisms, often acting without protein intermediates. Riboswitches are cis-regulatory ncRNAs that directly sense small molecule metabolites to control gene expression. Many riboswitches operate through kinetic control, meaning the rate at which a ligand binds to the aptamer domain determines whether gene expression is turned ON or OFF. Here, we present a comparative survey of riboswitch repertoires across eight microbiomes: human gut, oral, skin, vaginal, mouse gut, pig gut, sheep rumen, and marin

Contextualized within paradigm shifts in biological sciences toward reimagining reproductive health as entangled with microbial bodies, we engage interembodiment to underscore central tensions within projects leveraging the promises of the gendered microbiome. With research demonstrating that maternal vaginal microbes first "seed" infants' immuno-development and then dynamic relations at the breast develop it, microbes and their relations become reframed as a kind of intergenerational biocultural "inheritance." This inheritance is experienced through microbiopolitical demands for a "good vagin

Microorganisms in human life play a huge role: in particular, those that coexist with the host organism, inhabiting the skin, upper respiratory tract, external genitalia and especially the digestive tract. The intestinal microbiota, including bacteriome, mycobiome and virome, not only takes part in the digestion process, but also provides the synthesis of a number of vitamins. The intestinal microbiome also serves as the basis for a system of extensive bidirectional neuroendocrine pathways that connect microbiota with various regions of the central nervous system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-ad

Microbiota and microbiome, which refers, respectively, to the microorganisms and conjoint of microorganisms and genes are known to live in symbiosis with hosts, being implicated in health and disease. The advancements and cost reduction associated with high-throughput sequencing techniques have allowed expanding the knowledge of microbial communities in several species, including dogs. Throughout their body, dogs harbor distinct microbial communities according to the location (e.g., skin, ear canal, conjunctiva, respiratory tract, genitourinary tract, gut), which have been a target of study mo

Antibiotics without selectivity for acne treatment may destroy the beneficial microbes in the human microbiome that helps to fight Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), a bacterium associated with inflammatory acne vulgaris. Probiotic treatment by direct application of live Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) onto the open acne lesions may run the risk of bloodstream infections. Here, we fabricated the polysulfone microtube array membranes (PSF MTAM) to encapsulate probiotic S. epidermidis. We demonstrate that the application of the encapsulation of S. epidermidis in PSF MTAM enhanced the gl

This narrative review summarises the benefits, risks and appropriate use of acid-suppressing drugs (ASDs), proton pump inhibitors and histamine-2 receptor antagonists, advocating a rationale balanced and individualised approach aimed to minimise any serious adverse consequences. It focuses on current controversies on the potential of ASDs to contribute to infections-bacterial, parasitic, fungal, protozoan and viral, particularly in the elderly, comprehensively and critically discusses the growing body of observational literature linking ASD use to a variety of enteric, respiratory, skin and sy

Gut enterotypes-dominated by Bacteroides (B-type) or Prevotella (P-type)-are closely associated with habitual dietary intake and our host health traits. However, differences in skin health and dietary associations according to enterotypes have not been fully elucidated. Therefore, we investigated these associations in 74 healthy Korean adults. Fecal microbiota composition, fecal SCFAs, fecal calprotectin, skin hydration and pH, skin free amino acids (FAAs), and dietary intake (via 3-day food records) were assessed. Two distinct enterotypes were identified: B-type (n = 48) and P-type (n = 26).

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus epidermidis is a prevalent common microorganism found on the skin of most mammals, including humans. However, S. epidermidis is also known as an opportunistic pathogen that can cause diseases if the skin microbiome becomes skewed to favor its overgrowth. This situation can be worsened if the causative strains are antibiotic-resistant. To explore potential alternatives to replace conventional antibiotics, we aim to use probiotics, specifically Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, in controlling the growth, colonization, and biofilm formation…

INTRODUCTION: Probiotics have emerged as a promising and safe alternative therapy for atopic dermatitis (AD) by regulating the gut microbiota-immune axis, correcting type 1/type 2 imbalance, and repairing the skin barrier.
METHODS: A mouse model of AD was established using diphenylnitromethane (DNFB). Low, medium, and high doses of human milk-derived Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus HM126 were administered to investigate its effects on the model. We observed the scratching frequency and skin lesion scores after 28 days of continuous oral administration. Serum biochemical indicators and inflammato

BACKGROUND: Emollients are the baseline treatment for mild or moderate atopic dermatitis (AD) to improve the epidermal barrier and provide anti-irritant and anti-pruritic effects. Emollient 'plus' can influence the skin microbiome of atopic eczema patients.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits of using Emollient 'plus' to reduce corticosteroid consumption.
METHODS: In an open, single-centre, randomized, controlled study, patients with mild to moderate AD (Severity scoring of AD [SCORAD] score 20-30) were randomized 1:1 to apply the Emollient 'plus' twice daily for 28 days or to continue with…

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disorder that mostly affects young adults in areas rich in sebaceous glands (scalp, face, and trunk). In adolescents and adults, SD clinical presentation may range from mild patches to diffuse scalp scaling. In infants, it mainly occurs on the scalp as yellowish, scaly patches ("cradle cap"). In adults, several environmental triggers are likely to promote SD development, along with fungal colonization by Malassezia spp., sebaceous gland activity, as well as immunosuppression, endocrine, neurogenic and iatrogenic factors. In child
