We report two cases of digestive/intra-abdominal PEComa. The first lesion developed in the caecum of a 36-year-old woman, the second in the pararectal region of a 35-year-old woman. The first tumor was formed from spindle cells arranged in fascicles, the second contained predominantly epithelioid cells with prominent nucleoli. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells expressed smooth muscle actin and melanocyte markers (HMB45), S-100 protein and CD117 were negative. Based on the morphologic aspect and, above all, on the immunohistochemical study the diagnosis of PEComa was retained for both lesions.

BACKROUND: Lipoleiomyomas are rare, benign tumors combining smooth muscle and adipose tissue, most commonly found in the uterus.
CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old woman with a history of surgical treatment of uterine leiomyoma presented with syncopal episodes. Echocardiography revealed masses in the right atrium that led to urgent partial resection of a 10-cm tumor originating from the iliac veins. Three years later, recurrence was detected, extending from the iliac vessels to the atrium. This required complex thoracoabdominal surgery with an R1/2 resection, indicating a high likelihood of tumor re

A novel molecular subset of epithelioid leiomyosarcomas with rhabdoid features harboring PGR gene rearrangements has recently been documented. Herein, we present a unique case of PGR-rearranged smooth muscle tumor with both PGR-NR4A3 and UBR5-PGR gene fusions reported in a 30-year-old woman who had a mass in the broad ligament. The histological examination showed a round/polygonal to spindle cell tumor with abundant myxoid matrix and focal hyalinization, resulting in an epithelioid pattern. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that the tumor had variable staining for desmin, SMA, and h-cal…

Mesenteric leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor. It was often misdiagnosed as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) until the introduction of immunohistochemistry staining (IHC) in 1998. Currently, a positive IHC staining for smooth muscle markers represents the main diagnostic modality. Herein, we present a case of Mesenteric LMS in a 68-year-old woman, who presented with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain and was found to have a right-sided mesenteric tumor encasing the right ureter, with right hydroureteronephrosis. The patient underwent surgical removal of

We report a tumor arising in the middle ear of a 65-year-old female patient that was composed of an ovarian-type stroma (OS) and an epithelial component. The tumor consisted of irregular, polypoid masses containing multiple variably sized cystic spaces, which were invariably surrounded by the OS. The cystic spaces were lined by flat, cuboidal, or columnar epithelial cells, in most parts showing mucinous differentiation. The epithelial lining of the cysts strongly expressed cytokeratins AE1-3, CK7, CK8, CK18, CK19, EMA, and S100 protein. The stroma expressed CD34 and smooth muscle actin. No cyt

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare smooth muscle tumor that may extend into extrauterine veins. A high IVL recurrence rate has been reported after hysterectomy. A 44-year-old woman underwent total hysterectomy as a result of uterine leiomyoma, and IVL within the left uterine vein was incidentally found during the surgery. A residual tumor within the right ovarian vein was detected on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) two days postoperatively. The tumor was diagnosed as IVL because it showed contrast enhancement on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging by retrospective re-int…

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) of the pancreas is an unusual tumor deriving from mesenchyma. This paper described a case of pancreatic PEComa, which was initially suspected as neuroendocrine carcinoma by biopsy, and therefore surgical treatment was recommended due to undetermined diagnosis. Examination of the surgical specimen under a microscope showed that the tumor cell's morphology was epithelioid or spindle-shaped, and ranged in a nested pattern. Additionally, these cells had a large extent of acidophilic cytoplasm, no mitotic figures, and expressed HMB-45, melan-p, and smoot

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) most frequently involve the uterus, particularly the uterine corpus and very occasionally the cervix. One case of PEComa identified using a conventional cervical smear has previously been documented. Herein, we present the second such case. The patient was a 51-year-old woman with abnormal genital tract bleeding. Samples collected for conventional cervical smears were submitted for cytopathological examination, which revealed discohesive monotonous tumor cells showing epithelioid morphology, ample cytoplasm that was pale to weakly eosinophilic, an

Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma (LGCCC) is a rare salivary gland tumor that was recently defined as a variant of cystadenocarcinoma by the 2005 World Health Orgazniation (WHO) classification system. We report cytologic findings of an unusual case of LGCCC with many psammoma bodies. A 90-year-old man presented a palpable mass on his left parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology showed tumor cells that were arranged in clusters and dispersed individually. The tumor cells showed mild atypia and had clear or dense cytoplasm with some vacuoles. Numerous psammoma bodies were note

Cytokeratin-positive interstitial reticulum cell (CIRC) sarcoma is a rare type of dendritic cell tumor derived from a subset of fibroblastic reticular cells. Expression of cytokeratins and extranodal location of these tumors can lead to a misdiagnosis of carcinoma. We report two cases of CIRC sarcomas primarily involving the scalp and breast. Patients were referred with an initial diagnosis of carcinoma. Case 1 underwent wide local excision of the scalp tumor with left posterolateral neck dissection. Case 2 had modified radical mastectomy for the tumor in left breast. Histopathological examina

Myofibroblastoma is a rare type of benign mesenchymal tumor; only two cases of intracranial myofibroblastoma have been reported in the literature. The authors report on the case of a 34-year-old woman with a myofibroblastoma in the suprasellar region who presented with the complaint of sudden onset of headache followed within 2 weeks by progressively worsening visual disturbance. Computerized tomography scanning demonstrated a mixed low- and high-density mass in the suprasellar region and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed the mass to be of mixed intensity with heterogeneous

INTRODUCTION: Myofibromatosis is a rare but probably under estimated tumor.
OBSERVATION: We report a case of a newborn presenting with a facial tumor suggestive of sarcoma. Discrepancy between clinical features and histologic pattern of angioma suggested the diagnosis of myofibroma. The diagnostic of myofibromatosis was made later by specific labelling (actin-smooth muscle) and was confirmed by major spontaneous involution.
DISCUSSION: The histology of myofibroma associates fibrous and angiomatous patterns that may be confusing when examining a small biopsy. Due to confusing semiology and hi

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) of the salivary glands is an uncommon, low-grade malignant tumor. A recent report demonstrates sebaceous differentiation in this tumor even though its significance has never been documented as a precise histologic variant. Six cases of EMC exhibiting sebaceous differentiation (sebaceous EMC) of the parotid gland were analyzed for their clinicopathologic features and immunohistochemical characteristics. In addition, primary salivary sebaceous carcinomas were also examined for comparison. In our series, the incidence of sebaceous EMC was 0.2% among 3012 c

Ovarian leiomyomas are rare benign smooth muscle tumors, accounting for <1% of all ovarian neoplasms. While most commonly found in premenopausal women, their occurrence in postmenopausal women is rare and often raises concerns about malignancy. We report a unique case of ovarian leiomyoma torsion in a 73-year-old postmenopausal woman who presented with postmenopausal bleeding and acute pelvic pain. Imaging studies initially suggested an ovarian mass and surgical exploration revealed a twisted mass, which was histologically confirmed as a leiomyoma. Immunohistochemical analysis of the tumor dem…

INTRODUCTION: Scrotal leiomyoma is a rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm that originates from smooth muscles. Up to now, the exact tumor properties remain unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old male presented with intermittent mild pain and constant heaviness in the right scrotum for 1 year. The physical examination revealed a 6.5 cm by 5.5 cm by 5.5 cm sized, firm, mobile and non-tender lump within the inferior right scrotum. The ultrasound examination revealed a well-circumscribed and heterogenous hypoechoic tumor. MR imaging showed isointense on T1-weighted images, hypointense on T2-weight

Primary leiomyoma of the liver is an extremely rare benign hepatic tumor in asymptomatic patients. While leiomyoma is frequently found in the genitourinary tract, to the best of our knowledge only 29 cases of primary hepatic leiomyoma have been reported in the English language medical literature. Primary hepatic leiomyoma in patients without an underlying systemic disease (immunosuppression) is even more uncommon. A leiomyoma is composed of bundles of smooth muscle fibers and rarely transforms into a malignant tumor. We present a previously healthy 44-year-old woman who was incidentally found

Primary perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) of the liver is a very rare example of an emerging family of hepatic PEC tumors. Only few cases have been described so far. We report the case of a large but benign hepatic PEComa in a 53-year-old man without signs of tuberous sclerosis. In contrast to recently described PEC-derived liver tumors in children and young adults, this neoplasm was not related to the hepatic ligaments but had developed deeply within the liver substance. The neoplastic cells displayed the complete phenotype typical for PEComas, i.e. reactivity for several melanoma

A 14-year-old girl with common variable immunodeficiency syndrome was found to have a low-grade malignant neoplasm arising in the left temporal lobe of the brain. Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies established a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma, despite the rarity of this tumor in children. In situ hybridization with the EBER probe revealed essentially all of the neoplastic cells to be infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Children with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are known to exhibit an increased incidence of smooth muscle tumors associated with EBV. Similar tumors…

Prognosis in 11 cases of hemangiopericytoma of the orofacial region (9 buccal and 2 parotid tumors) was, as with these lesions in other zones, an uncertain entity: 4 local recurrences within 8 months to 7 years; one fatal outcome after 3 years from pulmonary micrometastases. Histologic classification of these tumors into 3 cytologic groups of increasing malignancy (I to III) is a function of the number of their cytologic anomalies. They are also divided according to their overall morphology into poorly differentiated, differentiated and sclerous types. Positive correlations between structure a

The perivascular epithelioid cell (PEC) is a unique cell type coexpressing contractile proteins (mainly α-smooth muscle actin), melanocytic markers, including microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), and estrogen and progesterone receptors. It is constantly present in a group of tumors called PEComas. Renal PEComas include the common angiomyolipoma as well as less common lesions such as microscopic angiomyolipoma, intraglomerular lesions, angiomyolipoma with epithelial cysts, epithelioid angiomyolipoma, oncocytoma-like angiomyolipoma and lymphangioleiomyomatosis of the renal sinu
