Circumplex models have organized interpersonal behavior along 2 orthogonal dimensions--communion (which emphasizes connection between people) and agency (which emphasizes one person's influence over the other). However, many empirical studies have disconfirmed certain predictions from these models. We therefore revised the model in 4 ways that highlight interpersonal motives. In our revision: (a) the negative pole of communion is indifference, not hostility; (b) a given behavior invites (not evokes) a desired reaction from the partner; (c) the complement of a behavior is a reaction that would

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between receiving disability payments and changes in health status, community adjustment, and subjective quality of life.
METHODS: The study evaluated outcomes among homeless mentally ill veterans who applied for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income through a special outreach program. Veterans who were awarded benefits were compared with those who were denied benefits; their sociodemographic characteristics, clinical status, and social adjustment were evaluated just before receiving the initial award decision and

BACKGROUND: Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment is increasingly available within jails, but little is known about patient experiences regarding treatment continuity post-release.
METHODS: Between 2021 and 2022, we interviewed 38 recently-released people who received MOUD in Massachusetts county jails. We asked participants about their experiences with reentry and MOUD continuity post-release. Thematic analyses were framed by the social-ecological model.
RESULTS: At the individual-interpersonal level, participants reported the importance of self-advocacy during incarceration t

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) lacks effective options for core symptoms. Cannabinoids, especially cannabidiol (CBD) and combined CBD:Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) formulations, are of interest, but clinical evidence is heterogeneous.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of cannabinoid-based interventions for behavioral outcomes in children and adolescents with ASD.
METHODS: Six databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, PubMed, PsycINFO) were searched from February 2024 to June 2025. Risk of bias was assessed using RoB 2 (randomized controlled tria

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) encompasses a range of neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by impairments in social abilities and communication. Studying appropriate animal models can enhance our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying these conditions, potentially leading to improved treatment and intervention strategies. Modeling impairments in linguistic development and vocal communication caused by autism had been a challenging goal for a long time. Prenatal valproic acid (VPA) treatment has been successfully used to induce ASD-like behavioral symptoms in several vertebrat

Background/Objectives: Rett Syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that affects girls and is characterized by severe motor and cognitive impairments, the loss of purposeful hand use, and communication difficulties. Children with RTT, especially those aged 5 to 9 years, often struggle to develop the foundational skills necessary for adaptive functioning, such as eye contact, object tracking, functional gestures, turn-taking, and basic communication. These abilities are essential for cognitive, social, and motor development and contribute to greater autonomy in daily life. This stu

OBJECTIVE: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders that affect social and communication skills. These diseases are characterized by severe communication and social skills disabilities and limited and repetitive activities. The prevalence of these disorders appears to be steadily increasing. It is proposed that the genes involved in the dopamine pathway may play an essential role in the development of autism. In this study, we investigated the possible association between Ex3 VNTR polymorphism of the DRD4 gene and autism spectrum disorders in the Iranian pop

Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental variant thought to affect 1 in 166 [Fombonne (2003): J Autism Dev Disord 33:365-382]. Individuals with autism demonstrate atypical social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors, but can also present enhanced abilities, particularly in auditory and visual perception and nonverbal reasoning. Structural brain differences have been reported in autism, in terms of increased total brain volume (particularly in young children with autism), and regional gray/white matter differences in both adults and children with autism, but the

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with atypical social communication as a core symptom. Variations in social information processing in individuals with ASD are associated with the social brain, which encompasses four specific subnetworks, that is, reward system, theory of mind network, mirror neuron system, and face perception network. However, the relationship between neural mechanisms of altered social functioning and modular integration of these subnetworks within the social brain remains unclear in ASD. With resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by aberrant reciprocal social interactions, impaired communication, and repetitive behaviors. While the etiology remains unclear, strong evidence exists for a genetic component, and several synaptic genes have been implicated. SHANK genes encode a family of synaptic scaffolding proteins located postsynaptically on excitatory synapses. Mutations in SHANK genes have been detected in several autistic individuals. To understand the consequences of SHANK mutations relevant to the diagnostic and associated symptoms of autism, comprehensive behavi

With the advent of new psychotherapeutic agents, many individuals with mental illness are living successfully in communities. However, they may become involved in situations with law enforcement officers, which may lead to potentially negative experiences. During police academy training, new officers may receive training focused on optimizing interactions with people with physical/mental disabilities; however, this may be inadequate to enable effective communication between officers and individuals with mental illness. Given the growing prevalence of mental illness, it is increasingly likely t

Peer delivered, social oriented HIV prevention intervention designs are increasingly popular for addressing broader contexts of health risk beyond a focus on individual factors. Such interventions have the potential to affect multiple social levels of risk and change, including at the individual, network, and community levels, and reflect social ecological principles of interaction across social levels over time. The iterative and feedback dynamic generated by this multi-level effect increases the likelihood for sustained health improvement initiated by those trained to deliver the peer interv

Audiotaped conversational samples from adults diagnosed as having autistic disorders (n = 15) or developmental receptive language disorders (n = 17) in childhood were transcribed and analyzed using methods based on those of Bishop and Adams (1989). Subjects with autism showed substantially greater pragmatic impairment not explicable by generalized impairment of verbal skills. This was mainly due to autistic subjects' greater difficulty in forming context-relevant communicative intentions; in contrast, pragmatic impairments arising from failures in translating intentions into spoken utterances

BACKGROUND: There has an increasing number of published trials on psychosocial intervention programmes for pre-school children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To achieve better quality of unbiased evidence for the effectiveness of ASD interventions, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive review that covers studies with adequate quality standards, such as randomised controlled trials (RCTs), and different types of intervention In this study, we categorize interventions for ASD as behavioural, social-communication focused, and multimodal developmental based on Howlin's classification of

The World Health Organization and the United Nations have increasingly acknowledged the importance of urban green space (UGS) for healthy ageing. However, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like India with exponential ageing populations have inadequate UGS. This qualitative study examined the relationships between UGS and healthy ageing in two megacities in India. Participants were recruited using snowball sampling in New Delhi and Chennai and semi-structured interviews were conducted with consenting participants (N = 60, female = 51%; age > 60 years; fluent in English, Hindi, or Tamil).

IMPORTANCE: The inverse social gradient in mental disorders is a well-established research finding with important implications for causal models and policy. This research has used traditional objective social status (OSS) measures, such as educational level, income, and occupation. Recently, subjective social status (SSS) measurement has been advocated to capture the perception of relative social status, but to our knowledge, there have been no studies of associations between SSS and mental disorders.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate associations of SSS with DSM-IV mental disorders in multiple countri

In order to obtain indicative data regarding intellectual, behavioural and social outcome into adulthood of subjects with a history of childhood head injury (CHI), twenty adults were selected who had been referred to the Neuropsychology Unit at the University of Parma at the time of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) at an age between 8 and 14 years. The level of intellectual and behavioural impairment was determined and rated by WISC and WAIS IQa and by the frequency of maladjustive behaviour. GOS score and Barthel index were used to detect the level of disability. Social adjustment and community

Seeking to align psychiatric practice with general medicine following the inauguration of the National Health Service, psychiatric hospitals in post-war Britain deployed new treatments designed to induce somatic change, such as ECT, leucotomy and sedatives. Advocates of these treatments, often grouped together under the term 'physical therapies', expressed relief that the social problems encountered by patients could now be interpreted as symptomatic of underlying biological malfunction rather than as a cause of disorder that required treatment. Drawing on the British Journal of Psychiatric So
