Evidence is strong for adverse fetal effects of high level or chronic prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), but many pregnant women continue to drink at lower levels. The 'Asking Questions about Alcohol in pregnancy' prospective cohort aimed to determine the neurodevelopmental consequences at 6-8 years of age of low to moderate PAE. 1570 women from seven public antenatal clinics in Melbourne, Australia, provided information on frequency and quantity of alcohol use, and obstetric, lifestyle and socio-environmental confounders at four gestation timepoints. PAE was classified into five trajectories pl

Despite its adaptive value for social life, the emergence and the development of the ability to detect agents that cause aversive interactions and distinguish them from potentially affiliative agents (approachers) has not been investigated. We presented infants with a simple interaction involving two agents: one of them (the "repulser") moved toward and pushed the other (the "approacher") which reacted by simply moving toward the repulser without contacting it. We found that 8-month-olds (N = 28) looked longer at the approacher than at the repulser (Experiment 1), whereas 4-month-olds (N = 30)

This article works across multiple disciplinary boundaries, especially queer theory, to examine critically the controversial, and often socially controlling, role of biomedical knowledge and interventions in the realm of human sexuality. It will attempt to situate scientific/medical discourses on sexuality historically, socially, and culturally in order to expose the ways in which "proper" sexual health in medical research and clinical practice has been conflated with prevailing social norms at particular historical junctures in the 20th and 21st centuries. How might the relationship between c

Cognitive models and adult research associate social anxiety disorder (SAD) with hypervigilant-avoidant processing of social information, such as eye contact. However, processing biases in childhood SAD remain mostly unexplored. We examined 10- to 13-year-old children's eye contact processing and pupil dilation in response to happy, neutral, and angry faces in three groups: SAD (n = 31), mixed anxiety disorders (MAD; n = 30), and healthy controls (HC; n = 32). Compared to HC, SAD children showed faster first fixations on the eye region of neutral faces and shorter first fixation durations on t

A number of controlled trials have demonstrated the efficacy of Internet-based cognitive-behaviour therapy for treating social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, little is known about what makes those interventions work. The current trial focuses on patient expectations as one common mechanism of change. The study examines whether patients' expectancy predicts outcome, adherence, and dropout in an unguided Internet-based self-help programme for SAD. Data of 109 participants in a 10-week self-help programme for SAD were analysed. Social anxiety measures were administered prior to the intervention

Machiavellianism is a set of personality traits characterized by a callous nature, a belief in engaging in manipulative tactics for personal gain, a cynical and distrusting view of others, and pragmatically moral stance. Behaviors and views of individuals with elevated Machiavellian traits can be seen to have a marked similarity with several behaviors and views of individuals with substance use issues, making it difficult to differentiate between them. Using regression analysis, this exploratory study sought to identify underlying predictors of Machiavellianism. Substance using undergraduate s

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hydatid cysts are caused by larval forms of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatid disease, which is endemic in Turkey, is an important health problem in agricultural and stockbreeding areas where there are insufficient environmental health and preventive medicine services. Previous studies on this topic reported that hydatid disease was frequently associated with stockbreeding in rural areas.
OBJECTIVES: In this retrospective clinical study, it is aimed to evaluate the social factors associated with pulmonary hydatid cyst in the Aegean region of Turkey.

AIM: This study explored the lived experience of phenylketonuria (PKU) for the New Zealand adult and its relevance for issues of treatment adherence.
METHOD: In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with eight New Zealand adults with early-treated PKU regarding their experiences of living with PKU. The interviews were transcribed, and then analysed using grounded theory. A review of relevant medical, scientific and social science literature placed this analysis in a broader context.
RESULTS: A number of consistent themes emerged as characteristic of the participants' life experiences,

This study first describes the anthropometric profile of employees at Banco do Brasil and then compares these results to those of the Brazilian National Health and Nutritional Survey, PNSN/1989, for the Southeastern region of the country. It is a cross-sectional study with a sample comprising 647 bank clerks. Weight and height informed by respondents were used to compute the body mass index (BMI). Among bank clerks, 8.8% were underweight, 27.8% were overweight and 6.4% were obese. Overweight increased with age and was about 3 times greater in men than in women. Among social and demographic var

Although cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) with exposure is the first-line treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), its efficacy is lower for SAD than for other anxiety disorders. One possible reason is that CBT may not effectively target the key maintaining features of SAD: persistent avoidance and heightened threat expectancy. Experimental research shows that individuals with elevated social anxiety exhibit generalised avoidance and persistent threat beliefs in conditioning paradigms, yet it remains unclear whether brief cognitive-behavioural (CB) strategies can modify these fear respo

BACKGROUND: Building on an earlier quantitative study which found that gay/bisexual men from Central and Eastern Europe were at greater risk of sexual ill health following migration to the UK, the aim of this qualitative study is to explore how the process of migration itself may have influenced the migrants' sexual behaviour and attitudes.
METHODS: To address these questions, we conducted 17 in-depth interviews in London with gay/bisexual male migrants from Central and Eastern Europe, drawing on Fisher and Fisher's Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model as an interpretive framework.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) causes significant socioeconomic burdens. One of the strongest predictors of PD is rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD; when there is no known other cause of RBD, referred to as idiopathic RBD [iRBD]), but there is no information about its factual welfare burden. We estimated the direct and indirect total costs of iRBD in a national sample of patients, based on a national register-based cohort study with matched controls.
METHODS: Using records from the Danish National Patient Registry, patient's diagnosis with RBD from 2006 to 2016

BACKGROUND: In many countries, those with lower socioeconomic status are disproportionately affected by poor oral health. This can be attributed, at least in part, to differences in preventive dental visiting. While several theories have been applied to the area, they generally fail to capture the recursive nature of dental visiting behaviour, and fall short of informing the design of complex interventions to tackle inequalities.
OBJECTIVE: To undertake a systematic review and synthesis of theory in order to provide an overview of the pathways which bring about socioeconomic inequalities in e

BACKGROUND: Maternal exposure to socioeconomic disadvantage increases the risk of child injuries and subsequent child developmental and mental health problems - particularly for young mothers. To inform early intervention planning, this research therefore aimed to describe the health and social adversities experienced by a cohort of girls and young women in early pregnancy in British Columbia (BC), Canada.
METHODS: Participants were recruited for the BC Healthy Connections Project (BCHCP), a randomized controlled trial examining the effectiveness of Nurse-Family Partnership, a home visitation
