The Emotional Aftermath of Football: How National Team Performance During the UEFA Men's EURO 2024 Shapes Spectators' Daily Emotions.

While socially comparative emotions such as envy and schadenfreude are a pervasive part of people's lives, surprisingly little is known about how large-scale sporting events shape these emotional responses. We address this gap by investigating the UEFA EURO 2024 tournament, which provided a unique ecologically-valid field setting to examine how major competitions and national teams winning (vs. losing) evoke not only joy and happiness, but also intergroup emotions rooted in social comparison. In a multi-wave survey of 952 participants from five different countries (England, Germany, Italy, the

Women and migration: a public health issue.

The need to migrate is usually a function of the complex interaction of economic, social, familial and political factors. Among the most important, however, are the denial of access to education, employment, goods and services and the lack of respect for basic human rights. Because in many societies women are marginalized from these rights, migration to more economically and educationally open societies can often help improve their personal situation and their professional opportunities. On the other hand, because the status of women is usually linked to their role and status within the family

Examining the Role of Racial and Neighborhood Context in Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy: A Multilevel Analysis.

PURPOSE: Use administrative patient discharge data from 2018-2020 to examine the independent and potentially interactive associations of patient race and area-level indices of the social vulnerability metric with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN & METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study used administrative discharge records from 198,507 patients who had live births in Illinois over a 3-year period and linked it with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) scores at the zip code level. Multilevel analyses examined patient race after cont

Social determinants of health and biological embedding: From the social gradient to epigenetics in the DOHaD context.

Current evidence shows that social and environmental conditions present from the earliest stages of life can influence health and disease trajectories. From the perspective of the DOHaD (developmental origins of health and disease) paradigm, the social determinants of health interact with nutritional, environmental, toxic, and psychosocial factors during periods of high biological plasticity, especially during the first 1000 days of life, modulating developmental programming processes. This view is supported by the social gradient in health, which shows a progressive worsening of morbidity and

Symptoms and health problems in pregnancy: their association with social factors, smoking, alcohol, caffeine and attitude to pregnancy.

This paper describes the prevalence and correlates of symptoms and health problems in pregnancy using data from a prospective population stu … d unplanned pregnancy reported more of most symptoms except nausea which was associated with higher social status. A negative attitude to pregnancy was associated with more headaches but was unrelated to nausea. Women who smoked reported more 'nerves and depression' but less nausea. In general, nausea and vomiting showed a different pattern of associations from …

Unequal Protective Effects of Parental Educational Attainment on the Body Mass Index of Black and White Youth.

BACKGROUND: Parental educational attainment is shown to be protective against health problems; the Minorities' Diminished Returns theory, however, posits that these protective effects tend to be smaller for socially marginalized groups particularly blacks than whites. AIMS: To explore racial differences in the effect of parental educational attainment on body mass index (BMI) in a national sample of US adolescents. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we used baseline data of 10,701 (8678 white and 2023 black) 12-17 years old adolescents in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health

Are self-reports of health and morbidities in developing countries misleading? Evidence from India.

Self-reported measures of poor health and morbidities from developing countries tend to be viewed with considerable skepticism. Examination of the social gradient in self-reported health and morbidity measures provides a useful test of the validity of self-reports of poor health and morbidities. The prevailing view, in part influenced by Amartya Sen, is that socially disadvantaged individuals will fail to perceive and report the presence of illness or health-deficits because an individual's assessment of their health is directly contingent on their social experience. In this study, we tested w

The morbidity of DSM-III-R dependent personality disorder.

Dependent personality has long been discussed by clinicians, and by empirical researchers more recently. Little empirical evidence so far has been presented as the type and degree of disability with which it is associated. This report provides some empirical data in that regard. To examine this question, those with and without DSM-III-R dependent personality were compared in male veterans drawn from an outpatient psychiatry clinic (dependent and nondependent groups). Standardized interview assessments were used to determine axes I and II disorders and family history. The dependent personality

Social Determinants of Depression Among Older Black Women Living With HIV.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of depression spans age-groups, but it can be particularly destructive for older people with chronic illness. Among older Black women living with HIV (OBWLH), multiple social determinants have been associated with the prevalence and severity of depression. A greater understanding of the impact of the social determinants at the individual, interpersonal, and community levels is needed. AIMS: To explore social determinants of depression among OBWLH at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and community levels. METHOD: Cross-sectional descriptive design. RESULTS: A total of

Treatment of alcohol dependence. Alcohol and homelessness: social point of view.

The phenomenon of homeless people is eliciting a devastating social impact with an estimated prevalence in the USA and in Europe between 5.6% and 13.9%. These persons have a poor quality of life, a limited or no social life. They are often unemployed or work only occasionally. They are at risk for problems with the law and often suffering from addiction to other drugs, psychiatric and other medical diseases. Alcohol is often not the cause of their social status, but only the result of other discomforts thus contributing to their bio-psycho-social degradation. In 2009 the US Department of Housi…

The importance of friendship: influence of peer relationships on physical and mental health in youth with spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations between peer relationship factors (i.e., quality and quantity) and mental and physical health outcomes in youth with spina bifida (SB). METHODS: One hundred and forty youth with SB (Mage = 11.43; 53.6% female) were recruited as part of a larger longitudinal study. Families of youth with SB were invited to ask the child's closest friend to participate. The study included questionnaire (youth- and parent-report) and observational peer interaction data. RESULTS: Observational peer interaction data were associated with mental and physical health in youth with

What works in inclusion health: overview of effective interventions for marginalised and excluded populations.

Inclusion health is a service, research, and policy agenda that aims to prevent and redress health and social inequities among the most vulnerable and excluded populations. We did an evidence synthesis of health and social interventions for inclusion health target populations, including people with experiences of homelessness, drug use, imprisonment, and sex work. These populations often have multiple overlapping risk factors and extreme levels of morbidity and mortality. We identified numerous interventions to improve physical and mental health, and substance use; however, evidence is scarce

The mediating role of loneliness in the relation between social engagement and depressive symptoms among older Korean Americans: do men and women differ?

OBJECTIVES: This study conceptualized loneliness as a mediator in the relation between social engagement and depressive symptoms and explored gender differences in the mediation model. Various indices of social engagement were considered including living arrangement, social network, and activity participation. METHOD: Using data from 674 community-dwelling Korean American older adults, we first examined the mediation effect of loneliness in the relation between each of 3 indices of social engagement (not living alone, social network, and activity participation) and depressive symptoms.
