BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic deprivation has been consistently associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes, yet it remains unclear whether social gradients persist in populations receiving regular, highly structured, life-sustaining care. Dialysis patients provide a specific context to explore whether structural social determinants continue to shape epidemic vulnerability beyond healthcare access alone. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between socioeconomic deprivation and both COVID-19 infection and clinical severity among dialysis patients in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region during

KEY POINTS: Hemodialysis clinic social networks spread attitudes and behaviors toward kidney transplants. Identifying and characterizing influential patients is a first step in future hemodialysis clinic social network interventions to promote kidney transplantation.
BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis clinics help develop patient social networks that may spread kidney transplant (KT) attitudes and behaviors. Identifying influential social network members is an important first step to increase KT rates. We mapped the social networks of two hemodialysis facilities to identify which patients were influent

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are of immediate concern in China's HIV epidemic. In 2008, approximately 2.5-6.5% of China's eight million MSM were HIV positive, while MSM represented 11% of all new HIV cases. Two factors that will in-part determine HIV-transmission dynamics among MSM, are sexual mixing patterns and the social networks which shape them. Sexual mixing patterns and social networks of Chinese MSM, however, remain poorly understood with little refined data available. One reason is that stigma discourages disclosure of names and identifiers to researchers. Using an alternative netw

BACKGROUND: Due to aging, the use of antidiabetic drugs, and dietary restrictions following a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the social interactions of older adults with T2DM are often limited. As a result, this population experiences a higher incidence of social isolation than the general older adult population. This study aims to analyze the prevalence and influencing factors of social isolation among older adults with T2DM using a structural equation model.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between January and November 2023. A total of 496 older adu

Canada's healthcare system is approaching structural limits: nearly $400 billion in annual spending, while nearly one in five Canadians is without a regular healthcare provider, emergency departments overflow and health inequities persist that universal coverage alone cannot resolve. This paper argues that social prescribing, a structured referral system connecting people to community resources through trained link workers, offers not merely an additional program but a paradigm shift. By making visible the economic and social value of community-based health work, social prescribing functions a

OBJECTIVES: To identify distinct social isolation profiles and their associations, both direct and stress-moderating, with depressive symptoms using objective and subjective indicators of social isolation among older adults in a low-income community.
METHODS: Latent class analysis and multivariable regression were conducted with data from 881 individuals aged 60 years or above residing in public rental housing in the Chin Swee area of Singapore.
RESULTS: Four profiles emerged: "well-connected and less lonely" (27.9%), "structurally isolated but less lonely" (56.4%), "somewhat isolated and mo

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The differential impact of the COVID-19 and HIV pandemics on marginalized communities has renewed calls for more robust and deeper investigation into structural and social causes of health inequities contributing to these infections, including underlying factors related to systematic racism. Using the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) framework, we analyzed parallel and divergent factors associated with COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS and the prevalence of disparate disease in diverse communities. We utilized PRISMA guidelines to identify relevant literature (N = 210 articles) that

This study aims to describe institutional and social supports for sexual and gender minoritized populations. Participants are from a mixed-method study on experiences of sexual violence among sexual and gender minoritized young people. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze data from semi-structured interviews (n = 25). One major barrier participants described included structural discrimination and violence (i.e., biphobia, misogyny, racism), which in turn contributed to challenges accessing support systems including mental health providers, sexual health services, and positive social

BACKGROUND: Post-migration social integration is a pressing concern for young ethnic-minority migrants in urban China. This study examines how ethnic self-identity shapes this integration process from the migrant's own lived perspectives. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, we regard young migrants as subjects of meaning-making rather than objects to be measured. Ecological systems theory, social identity theory, and social cognitive models provide the analytical frameworks for understanding how ethnic identity is negotiated within destination-city contexts.

This paper explores how social class shapes affective experiences, integrating the sociology of emotions with political economic theory to examine how systems of dis/advantage influence women's hopes and hopefulness about their futures and the potential for reductions in alcohol consumption. Using 149 open-ended qualitative interviews with 86 women across three studies, we analyse 'hope stories' to investigate how capacities for hopefulness are embedded in the social practices and temporal orientations of gender and class. Interviews focused on the role of alcohol in daily life and perceptions

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment significantly increases the risk of developing mental health problems in adolescence and adulthood. The present study examines if coping strategies and social support mediate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and mental health problems.
METHODS: Data analyzed were from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey Mental Health (CCHS-MH, N = 25,113), a national population survey. A structured diagnostic interview, the World Health Organization version of Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO-CIDI), was used to assess mental health statu

Corpus callosum dysgenesis is one of the most common congenital neurological malformations. Despite being a clear and identifiable structural alteration of the brain's white matter connectivity, the impact of corpus callosum dysgenesis on cognition and behaviour has remained unclear. Here we build upon past clinical observations in the literature to define the clinical phenotype of corpus callosum dysgenesis better using unadjusted and adjusted group differences compared with a neurotypical sample on a range of social and cognitive measures that have been previously reported to be impacted by

BACKGROUND: Iran has developed the most robust harm reduction infrastructure in the Middle East, marked by availability of low threshold methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), needle and syringe program (NSPs), and condom distribution services. However, little is known about the socially situated risk factors that make harm reduction clients-specifically those enrolled in MMT-vulnerable to relapse or continued illicit drug use. In this study, we sought to understand the "risk environment" of clients enrolled in harm reduction services in Tehran, Iran.
METHODS: Through observation and in-depth

OBJECTIVE: Although the detrimental physical health effects of social isolation have been known for three decades, the answers to how and why social relationships generally improve health remain elusive. Social relationships are not always beneficial, and we examined a structural dimension that may bring about their salubrious effects: affiliative reciprocity during a stressor.
METHODS: In a lifespan study, female rats lived with their sisters and were tested for temperament, affiliative reciprocity during an everyday stressor at puberty, corticosterone response to a stressor, mammary tumor d

Although community sports are widely promoted to enhance social integration, the mechanisms linking individual participation to collective cohesion remain theoretically underdeveloped. Grounded in Social Capital Theory and Social Interaction Theory, this study seeks to explain how social interactions serve as a conduit for converting sports engagement into community assets. To achieve this, a cross-sectional design was adopted, utilizing validated measurement instruments to survey participants in community sports activities. Structural Equation Modeling was subsequently employed to uncover key

The purpose was to assess personality traits in subjects with a DSM-IV diagnosis of social phobia. Thirty-two subjects were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV for Axes I and II disorders (SCID I and II). Personality traits were assessed by means of the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP). Current and lifetime axis I co-morbidity was diagnosed in 28% and 53% of the subjects, respectively. In total, 59% had at least one personality disorder and 47% were diagnosed with an avoidant personality disorder. The social phobics scored significantly higher than a Swedish normati

Our objective was to examine the neurobiology of social phobia from the perspectives of basic sciences, genetics, immunology, neuroendocrinology, neurotransmission and neuroimaging and to provide an integrated understanding of social phobia in the framework of a hypothetical neural circuit. Family and twin studies provide evidence that social phobia is heritable with significant genetic influence, and molecular genetics offers possibilities in understanding the nature of the trait that is transmitted. The biologic distinctiveness of social phobia from anxiety disorders and physiological valida
