Earthworms (Lumbricidae) are moisture-loving soil-dwellers that can be categorized into two feeding guilds with distinct behaviours: detritivores and geophages. Detritivores feed on litter fragments and geophages on smaller litter particles mixed with soil. When earthworms move within and across soil layers to forage, soil characteristics might influence the scale of these movements and their detectability to predators. To investigate the extent to which the detection of earthworm movements and the vibrations they thereby generate is affected by soil moisture, we used an innovative method to d…

Sequence-based tools have greatly improved the molecular description of soil bioremediation, but detection alone cannot confirm that a contaminant is being degraded by a defined pathway. In soils, bioavailability limitations, redox microsites, relic DNA, gene mobility, and community restructuring can decouple gene presence from reaction flux. This review synthesizes an operational framework that separates three inferential levels: pathway potential, in situ activity, and verified pathway operation. The framework links inoculant fate, functional gene abundance, gene expression, pathway reconstr…

Soil bioremediation is often presented as a sustainable alternative to physicochemical remediation, yet its field performance remains less predictable than laboratory and microcosm evidence suggests. This critical review argues that the central problem is not a lack of advanced technologies, but the frequent mismatch between the diagnosed failure mode, the selected intervention, and the endpoint used to claim success. Organic pollutants may be degraded, transformed, mineralized, or converted to hazardous intermediates, whereas metals and metalloids can only be immobilized, stabilized, extracte…

Soil organic carbon (C) is a critical component of terrestrial ecosystem C pools, playing a vital role in maintaining soil fertility, supporting sustainable agricultural development, and mitigating global climate change. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the pathways and effects of straw return and organic fertilizer application on soil C sequestration is essential. Straw return introduces exogenous C inputs that stimulate microbial activity and promote the formation of stable organic C fractions, although its decomposition is initially constrained by nitrogen (N) limitation. In cont…

Starch processing wastewater (SPW) is a high-strength organic effluent that imposes substantial treatment costs, while its high starch content also represents a potentially valuable carbon resource. Here, we developed an integrated waste-to-resource strategy for converting SPW into bacterial cellulose (BC) for sandy soil amelioration. To enable direct starch utilization, a strain capable of both amylase secretion and BC production was constructed. A sterilization-free fermentation process using raw SPW without an external carbon source was subsequently established and scaled from 120 mL to a 6…

Natural drying-wetting cycles can easily change the deformation characteristics of expansive soil, leading to uneven settlement and collapse phenomena in the long-term operation period of related projects. To pursue further green and sustainable geotechnical development, environmentally friendly Xanthan gum (XG) was adopted to improve the soil engineering properties, but studies on the deformation behavior of XG-treated expansive soils are limited. A series of water immersion expansion deformation tests is conducted on expansive soil with different XG ratios and initial dry densities under dif…

Agricultural soils are critical hotspots of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Yet, the environmental factors shaping these reservoirs and the hazards they pose to humans and livestock remain poorly understood. Because management practices introduce antibiotics, heavy metals, and nonantibiotic biocides, they can rapidly select for resistance. Most studies have examined components of management practices in isolation, overlooking the multiple stressors of modern industrial agriculture. Here, we used a large-scale field experiment to examine how multiple stressors from soil and crop manageme…

Nine novel dihydro-α-pyrone derivatives, talaromypyrones A-I (1-9), were isolated from the soil-derived fungus Talaromyces sp. G23. These compounds share a conserved 3'R-configuration within the 4-hydroxy-5,6-dihydro-2-pyrone core but display notable variations in their flanking polyketide chains. Talaromypyrones A-H (1-8) demonstrate potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including drug-resistant strains, while exhibiting excellent safety profile by showing no cytotoxicity toward normal human LO2 cells. However, they exhibit no activity against Gram-negative bacteria (l…

We examined the concentrations of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in the pore air of a well-drained soil at which pig carcasses were buried over 12-13 years at depths between 50 and 100 cm. Sites included disturbed pits without carcasses, an undisturbed site, a mass grave (20 pigs) and single carcass graves buried at two depths with and without burial in a plastic bag. Twelve years after burial, the concentrations of CH4 were mostly below atmospheric values (∼ 2.0 ppm), showing that this gas was of little value in detecting graves under these conditions. Concentrati…

Soil pollution from urbanization, agriculture, and industry, compounded by climate change, poses severe threats to soil health and food security. Traditional physical, chemical, and biological remediation approaches are often resource-intensive and risk secondary contamination. This narrative review critically synthesizes mechanistic insights into nanobubble (NB) technology, its interactions with soil microbial communities, and their applications in enhancing bioremediation of contaminated and saline soils. NBs (<1 µm improve the gas transfer, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), and facili…

INTRODUCTION: Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a prized medicinal species whose therapeutic value hinges on the abundance of bioactive metabolites. Accumulation of these metabolites are influenced by a range of environmental and edaphic factors, including soil physicochemical parameters, extracellular enzyme activities, composition and function of rhizosphere microbiome. However, how these factors individually and synergistically orchestrate the biosynthesis, transport, and ultimate storage of pharmaceutically active compounds within Safflower tissues remains unknown.

The bioaccumulation of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in rice has raised global concerns due to its potential threat to human health. Organic carbon is a crucial factor influencing MeHg production in soils, as it regulates mercury bioavailability and microbial activity. However, the role of microbial-derived carbon, a critical source of soil organic matter, in regulating MeHg production remains unclear. Here, we compared the effect of microbial necromass (i.e., Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and fungi) and plant residues on microbial mercury methylation during incubation of p…

Inadequate waste disposal systems have long been a perennial problem, with no clearly safe solution in sight in most developing countries. Dumpsites harbor microbial pathogens in the soil ecosystem that can cause disease outbreaks upon their seepage into the water bodies. However, there is a paucity of investigation on the diversity of fungi in dumpsites in Uganda. Hence, this research aims at evaluating the diversity and distribution patterns of fungi associated with top soils from fifteen different dumpsites in Kabale, South west, Uganda. Culturomics approach was employed in this investigati…

Soil compaction by agricultural machinery in general by and tractors in particular is an important problem in modern agricultural production. Such compaction destroys the soil structure, creates unfavorable physical parameters of the soil, and as a result, reduces crop yields. Therefore, it is important to clearly establish how the tractor wheels affect the soil. The experiments were conducted on the sandy loam soil by using CLAAS Xerion 5000 tractor with TRELLEBORG IF 900/60 R42 tires with internal pressures varying from 0.08 to 0.24 MPa in 0.04 MPa increments. To determine the stress propaga…
