OBJECTIVE: To help clarify the complex association between childhood abuse and adult psychopathology, the authors examined the relationship among abuse, Briquet's syndrome (somatization disorder), and dissociative symptoms.
METHOD: Ninety-nine female psychiatric clinic outpatients with a history of somatic complaints were assessed for Briquet's syndrome, dissociative symptoms, adult and childhood sexual abuse, childhood physical abuse, and childhood emotional abuse.

Mood and health reports from 65 administrative and clerical staff were obtained daily over a period of several weeks. Three mood factors emerged from the aggregated data which appear to be most suitably labelled: happiness, tense depression and hostile depression. Subjects high on hostile depression suffered more from colds. Subjects scoring highly on tense depressed mood reported more insomnia, head and neck aches. Efforts at medical psychotherapy in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital are appraised. Six popular generalisations that have tended to discourage attempts at medical psychotherapy in Africa are presented and illustrated by thirteen vignettes derived from our experience in psychotherapy among Nigerians in the last six years. The vignettes encourage reappraisal of these popular generalisations with a view to modifying them and stimulating more effort by others in the same direction. Methods used are discussed and relevant literature is reviewed.

A valid and reliable vignette-based measure of DSM-III psychiatric diagnostic knowledge was administered to practicing primary care physicians (PCPs; generally, internal and family practice medicine) and mental health professionals (MHPs, in psychiatry and psychology). Orthorexia is recognized as an eating disorder, an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder, or a somatoform disorder. A sequential-recruited clinical trial has been conducted to assess capacity of Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15) in distinguishing bipolar II disorder from major depressive disorder.
