Several reports in the late 1950s and early 1960s indicated that ultraviolet irradiation of dilute solutions of cytosine or 5-methylcytosine in aliphatic alcohols, such as methanol or ethanol, leads to reaction mixtures containing products with an absorption maximum around 300 nm. A thin-layer chromatographic screening procedure for some basic, neutral and acidic drugs was developed using 3 ml of horse plasma. Chloroform-2-propanol (95:5, v/v) was used as the extraction solvent. The drugs were identified by a high-performance thin-layer chromatographic plate and spraying successively with some detection reagents. In this study, the extraction recovery rates and the detection limits were determined at the same time.

The determination of bilirubin in serum was performed by the 2.5-dichlorphenyldiazonium method (DPD) and in capillary plasma by the direct photometric method (DPM). Both methods showed a good precision and accuracy. The investigation was carried out in 135 samples with a bilirubin concentration up to 25 mg/dl. Promazine is enzymically oxidized by ceruloplasmin without reduction of the 610 nm absorption band of the enzyme. Fluoride inhibited the reaction in a non-competitive manner. The ceruloplasmin oxidase activity is markedly enhanced when promazine is added in the presence of NADH; possibly through a change in enzyme conformation.

Dissolution of [111In]labeled tablets was measured in vivo in a totally noninvasive manner by using a modification of the perturbed angular correlation technique known as the summation peak ratio method. The activity of transketolase in mouse brain was 5.7 nmol/min/mg protein measured by an enzyme-coupled spectrophotometric assay. The apparent Km for ribose-5-phosphate was 330 microM, for D-xylulose-5-phosphate was 120 microM, and for thiamine pyrophosphate was 7 microM.
