The recent discovery of the natural product platensimycin as a new antibiotic lead structure has triggered the synthesis of numerous organic derivatives for structure-activity relationship studies. Herein, we describe the synthesis, characterization and biological evaluation of the first organometallic antibiotic inspired by platensimycin. (-)-Epibatidine, an excellent candidate of non-opioidal anesthesia, was formally synthesized in short steps from di-(l)-menthyl (R)-allene-1,3-dicarboxylate that was facilely prepared as a single isomer by means of crystallization-induced asymmetric transformation from a diastereomer mixture of (R)- and (S)-allene-1,3-dicarboxylates. Taking advantage of the chiral synthesis, derivatives of (-)-epibatidine were also prepared for targeting diagnostic agents that could bind nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the mammalian central nerve system.

Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure(TCLP) of zinc plating sludge was carried out to assess the leaching potential of the sludge and the leachates were analyzed for heavy metals. The concentration of zinc, chromium, and lead in the leachate were 371.5 mg/L, 1.95 mg/L and 1.99 mg/L respectively. BACKGROUND: In the process of heavy metals refining, workers are first of all exposed to metals, metalloids (As, Se) and their compounds. Moreover, they are exposed to sulphuric acid and dusts (about 2% SiO2).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Several dozen workers in two Polish plants were studied (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Ag refining processes, production of Ni sulphate and production of Se). Cd, Ni, Se, Cu, Pb, As and Ag were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) with graphite tube, whereas ZnO (as Zn) by AAS with air-acetylene flame. PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to describe some aspects of the intra-cellular mechanism of action of neuroleptics, drugs widely used in psychiatry in treatment of psychotic and affective disorders. The ability of neuroleptics to influence and modify the metabolic, energetic and structural processes of neurons, as well as their apoptosis, probably influence their therapeutic potential. The paper presents the clinical description of the masticatory organ and biochemical assessment of dental tissue in a patient employed in a glassworks for 20 years. During 12 years the patient has suffered baldness ("Alopecia areata") and atypical extensive and non-healing cutaneous lesions. Dental examination revealed changes typical of chronic poisoning by cadmium and bismuth compounds.

We describe a population of sickle cell anemia red cells (SS RBCs) ( approximately 4%) and a smaller fraction of normal RBCs (<0.03%) that fail to dehydrate when permeabilized to K(+) with either valinomycin or elevated internal Ca(2+). We studied the relation between ionized magnesium, total magnesium, and albumin levels in serum of 115 critically ill patients and the role of extracellular and intracellular magnesium in outcome prediction. The encrustation and blockage of four types of urinary catheters was studied in a simple laboratory model of the catheterized bladder. Pooled human urine was supplied to the bladder chamber at 0.5 mL/min. The bladder urine was inoculated with a clinical strain of Proteus mirabilis that had been isolated from an encrusted catheter. Standard renal clearance techniques were used to compare the effects of oral and intravenous glucose administration on renal calcium handling in the rat. A significant (P less than 0.01) calciuric response was evident in both groups following glucose loading. The maximal effect in the oral group, however, was slightly delayed. The value of measurements of zinc protoporphyrin in blood (ZPP) in the surveillance of workers occupationally exposed to lead has been studied. From a group of referents, consisting of 1,088 men and 511 women, it has been established that the normal mean ZPP is in the region of 25 micrograms/100 ml, and only rarely do values exceed 45 micrograms/100 ml. The higher ZPP values are frequently associated with low blood hemoglobin concentrations and appear to be manifestations of an iron-deficiency anemia.
