Evaluation of auditory brainstem implant (ABI) users' auditory behavior in everyday life.

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the everyday listening status of pediatric ABI users using the Turkish ABEL questionnaire. METHODS: The study included 33 parents of children with auditory brainstem implant, and 28 parents of children with cochlear implant were included as a control group. All implant users were between the ages of 4-14. Parents answered the ABEL questionnaire to assess their child's auditory behavior in their daily living environment. In addition, Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) and Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) scales were used to evaluate speech percepti…

Understanding Self-reported Hearing Disability in Adults With Normal Hearing.

OBJECTIVES: Despite a diagnosis of normal hearing, many people experience hearing disability (HD) in their everyday lives. This study assessed the ability of a number of demographic and auditory variables to explain and predict self-reported HD in people regarded as audiologically healthy via audiometric thresholds. DESIGN: One-hundred eleven adults (ages 19 to 74) with clinically normal hearing (i.e., audiometric thresholds ≤25 dB HL at all octave and interoctave frequencies between 0.25 and 8 kHz and bilaterally symmetric hearing) were asked to complete the 12-item version of the Speech, Sp

Objective Characterization of Phonation Type Using Amplitude of Flow Glottogram Pulse and of Voice Source Fundamental.

Phonation type, a phonatory dimension ranging from hypofunctional/breathy to hyperfunctional/pressed, is important both from a clinical and acoustical point of view; hyperfunctional voice can lead to voice disorders and hypofunctional voice reduces text intelligibility. Five male singers sang diminuendo sequences of the syllable /pae/ and three of them also produced speech or singing samples with different phonation types which were rated for phonatory pressedness by a panel of voice experts. The sequences were analyzed by inverse filtering and the associated subglottal pressures were estimate

Functional soft palate reconstruction: a comprehensive surgical approach.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunction of the soft palate is devastating to the patient's quality of life, resulting in unintelligible speech and poor swallowing. Reconstruction of the soft palate is complex because the dynamic fibromuscular structure cannot be duplicated. The efficacy of soft palate reconstruction has therefore been called into question. The purpose of this article is: (1) to describe our comprehensive surgical paradigm for soft palate reconstruction, (2) to provide details of the surgical techniques used, and (3) to report on patient functional outcomes. METHODS: Fifty-two patients spanni

The locus equation as an index of coarticulation in syllables produced by speakers with profound hearing loss.

Locus equations (LEs) were derived from consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) syllables produced by four speakers with profound hearing loss. Group data indicated that LE functions obtained for the separate CVC productions initiated by /b/, /d/, and /g/ were less well-separated in acoustic space than those obtained from speakers with normal hearing. A general trend of reduced anticipatory coarticulation was obtained for contexts in which speakers with normal hearing ordinarily coarticulate. One speaker engaged more coarticulation than did speakers with normal hearing. Speakers' productions could be

Relationships between esophageal speech proficiency and surgical, biographical, and social factors.

The relationship between judged esophageal speech proficiency and detailed medical/surgical, biographical, and social factors was investigated among a large sample of alaryngeal speakers. The data suggested that more extensive surgery such as radical neck dissection did not lessen the subjects' ability to learn esophageal speech. Surprisingly, subjects who had undergone radical neck surgery had better voices in many cases than those who had undergone only a simple laryngectomy. Educational level, socioeconomic status, length of time spent in speech therapy, and the number of years since surger

Comparison of three procedures for initial fitting of compression hearing aids. I. Experienced users, fitted bilaterally.

We compared the effectiveness of three procedures for the initial fitting of hearing aids with multi-band compression: (1) CAMEQ, which aims to amplify speech so as to give equal loudness per critical band over the frequency range important for speech intelligibility, and to give similar overall loudness to 'normal': (2) CAMREST, which aims to amplify speech so as to restore 'normal' specific loudness patterns, over a wide range of speech levels; (3) DSL I/O, which aims to map the dynamic range of normally hearing people into the reduced dynamic range of hearing-impaired people, with 'full' re…

Learning disorders and sex chromosome aberrations.

No sex chromosome aberrations were detected in a prospective study of twenty adult dyslexic men. A retrospective study of eighty-nine subjects with known sex chromosome aberrations revealed twenty of them to be mentally-retarded. Among the sixty-nine subjects of normal intelligence, learning, speech and attention disorders were frequent. Children with 47,XYY, 47,XXY, and 47,XXX karyotypes appeared particularly prone to experience delays in speech development as well as later academic underachievement in language-related subjects. In contrast, speech development was normal in all of the girls w

Nasal speaking valve: a device for managing velopharyngeal incompetence.

Velopharyngeal incompetence is a contributing factor for speech disorders, and other frequently accompanying disorders, such as cleft palate, congenital paralysis of the soft palate and cerebrovascular disease. A palatal lift prosthesis (PLP) has been fabricated for managing velopharyngeal incompetence to improve speech. Because of discomfort, such as difficulty in swallowing or vomiting reflex, while wearing the PLP, rigorous adjustment is required. Patients may have difficulty becoming accustomed to using the prosthesis. This article reports on a newly developed device, the nasal speaking va

Phonotactic therapy.

Words derive their structure not only from the sounds they include but also from the organization of those sounds within the word. This organization is the phonotactic level of the word: roughly, its shape including the sequence of its elements. Often, children with immature or disordered phonologies demonstrate phonotactic as well as phonetic limitations. Sometimes, the child may produce an age-appropriate variety of consonants and vowels but be unable to use them in the configurations required by the language: final consonants, clusters, multisyllabic words, and so forth. In such cases, the

Teaching vowel articulation with the computer vowel trainer. Methodology and results.

The Computer Vowel Trainer (CVT) uses linear prediction to estimate and display the shape of the speaker's vocal tract during an utterance. The assessment of the CVT was carried out over a period of three years with 14 profoundly deaf children divided into an experimental and a matched control group. Two main results were obtained: (a) children learning to articulate with the CVT achieve consistently higher articulation scores than those trained with conventional methods; (b) the younger the children, the greater their progress in vowel learning, retention and generalization.
