Reduction of astigmatism after infancy in children who did and did not wear glasses and have strabismus.

The purpose of this study was to record and explain the changes in astigmatism as normal and strabismic infants grew. Two-hundred-and-eighty-nine hypermetropic infants were randomly allocated to wear glasses from the age of six months. Changes in astigmatism and in hypermetropia of the horizontal and vertical meridia were compared in those who did and did not wear glasses and have strabismus. Mean astigmatism decreased significantly (p < 0.001) in both eyes of normal and strabismic children, but the 'last' astigmatism was significantly (p < 0.001) larger in both eyes of those who had strabismu…

Comparative study of brain lesions detected by magnetic resonance imaging between strabismus and nonstrabismus in infancy.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the causative factors in infantile esotropia, we evaluated morphological abnormalities in brain structures of esotropia patients showing any abnormal neurological signs in comparison to those of normal controls. METHODS: Sixty-five developmentally normal children participated in this study. Of these 65, 38 demonstrated infantile esotropia and 27 were normal controls. All underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain between 2 and 30 months. RESULTS: Abnormal brain findings were noted in 3 (7. 9%) children in the strabismus group, whereas none of the children i…

The influence of strabismus surgery on the blood-aqueous barrier: tyndallometry case studies in patients with risk factors.

We present tyndallometry as a method for investigation of subclinical changes in anterior-chamber flare in patients with risk factors regarding anterior-segment ischemia after squint surgery. The cases of six adult patients who underwent surgery on the vertical recti and who had additional risk either because of dysthyroid orbitopathy or because of transpositions carried out on the recti are presented. In one case a transient subclinical increase in the flare value was observed. This noninvasive method seems suitable for the provision of further information on the pathophysiology of anterior-s

Human strabismus: evaluation of the interhemispheric transmission time and hemiretinal differences using a reaction time task.

Experimentally induced strabismus in visually immature cats leads to abnormal development of the posterior corpus callosum. This, in turn, should lead to abnormal interhemispheric integration of unilaterally presented visual information. To test whether strabismus produces deficits in the human commissural visual system, the interhemispheric transmission time (ITT) was compared in strabismic and normal subjects. Simple unimanual reaction times (RT) were tested in 30 subjects in response to a lateralized target presented monocularly at 4 degrees and 35 degrees nasally and temporally from the fo…

Effects of rearing kittens with convergent strabismus on development of receptive-field properties in striate cortex neurons.

Convergent strabismus was induced surgically in seven kittens at 3 wk of age. Recordings were made in 131 cells in the striate cortex of these strabismic kittens after maturation, and the results were compared to the data obtained from 140 striate neurons in normally reared cats. All our samples had receptive fields (RFs) within 5 degrees of the area centralis. The spatial and temporal response properties were quantitatively analyzed by using drifting sinusoidal gratings of various contrasts as well as spatial and temporal frequencies. In contrast to other reports, the receptive-field properti…

Strabismus as a possible sign of subclinical muscular dystrophy predisposing to rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria: a study of an affected family.

Administration of succinylcholine to normal individuals results in alterations in muscle membrane integrity expressed as a slight increase in the concentrations of creatine phosphokinase (CK) in serum and appearance of small amounts of myoglobin in the urine, but without clinical symptoms. Subjects with strabismus due to congenital muscular dystrophy may develop more significant rhabdomyolysis expressed as muscle stiffness and weakness, massive myoglobinuria, marked elevation of serum CK and other enzymes, metabolic acidosis, tachycardia and moderate elevation of body temperature. In some case…

A clinical study on the detection of strabismus, anisometropia or ametropia of children by simultaneous photography of the corneal and the fundus reflexes.

Twenty two strabismus and 106 straight eyed patients with anatomically normal eyes were first photographed with a conventional camera equipped with a weak 100 mm teleobjective and coaxial flashlight and then examined clinically. The possibility of detecting strabismus, anisometropias and ametropias in the photographs by noting the localisation of the corneal reflexes and examining the appearance and lightness of the fundus reflexes and their possible asymmetry were tested in a double blind study. Even small angled strabismus cases could be found because of the asymmetrical localisation of the …

Genetic analysis of cover test measures and AC/A ratio in human populations with varying incidences of strabismus.

The genetic analyses of indices relating to distance alignment and accommodative convergence are presented. This approach is important in un … anding of the aetiology of such factors underlies an understanding of the aetiology of nonparalytic strabismus. The three populations displayed different tendencies in the cover test measure. The average tendency for each of the populations was consistent with the type of deviation common to all propositi of families within each of the respective populations …

Development and internal validation of a prescriptive multi-task learning model for horizontal strabismus surgery planning.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Horizontal strabismus affects ≈ 1.9% of the global population. Traditional “1 mm ≈ 2 Δ” nomograms disregard patient heterogeneity, leaving re-operation rates at 7–8% even after primary horizontal surgery. We aimed to develop a single prescriptive model that simultaneously predicts which horizontal extra-ocular muscles require surgery and the precise recession/resection dose for each, following the TRIPOD + AI reporting checklist. METHODS: In this retrospective single-centre study, 634 consecutive patients (2019–2024) undergoing primary horizontal-muscle surgery were analysed.…

Strabismus and amblyopia disrupt spatial perception but not the fidelity of cortical maps in human primary visual cortex.

Amblyopia is a common disorder of spatial vision and is frequently associated with the presence of anisometropia, strabismus, or both, during visual development. For highly visible stimuli, subjects with strabismic amblyopia often report marked spatial distortions, but the neural basis of this supra-threshold deficit is not well understood. Here, we used a combination of behavioural measurements and visual field mapping with high spatial-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 7 T to assess perceptual distortions in 12 participants with strabismic amblyopia and 9 control sub…

Development of Ocular Muscle Stimulation Systems and Optimization of Electrical Stimulus Parameters for Paralytic Strabismus Treatment.

Paralysis of the extraocular muscles can lead to complications such as strabismus, diplopia, and loss of stereopsis. Current surgical treatments aim to mitigate these issues by resecting the paralyzed muscle or transposing the other recti muscles to the paralyzed muscle, but they do not fully improve the patient's quality of life. Electrical stimulation shows promise, while requiring further in vivo experiments and research on various stimulation parameters. In this study, we conducted experiments on rabbits to stimulate the superior rectus (SR) muscles using different parameters and stimulati…

Visual acuity improvement in the amblyopic eye of a 50-year-old man following strabismus surgery.

It is generally believed that the visual acuity of an amblyopic eye cannot improve significantly in adulthood. However, there have been reports of this occurring following visual loss in the fellow eye. Best-corrected visual acuity improvement in amblyopic eyes of children with strabismic amblyopia following strabismus surgery has also been reported. We present the case of an adult whose visual acuity in his amblyopic eye improved 4 Snellen lines over 28 months following strabismus surgery.

The use of optical coherence tomography angiography to measure changes in iris vasculature after strabismus surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior segment ischemia (ASI) is a rare but potentially sight-threatening complication of strabismus surgery. Preoperative imaging of the iris vasculature may be appropriate in patients at high risk of ASI. In clinical practice, this is currently done through invasive fluoresceine or indocyanine green (ICG) angiography and in study context through laser speckle contrast imaging. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of noninvasive optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) as a screening tool for ASI in strabismus surgery. METHODS: A prospective intervention…

Constructing country-specific quality-of-life item banks for adults with amblyopia and strabismus in Australia and India.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Understanding the quality-of-life (QoL) impacts of amblyopia and strabismus from the perspectives of patients using validated tools would enable eye care practitioners to provide better clinical management. BACKGROUND: Item banks are advanced patient reported outcome measures with several advantages over traditional QoL assessment. This paper describes the development of amblyopia and strabismus-specific QoL item banks for two distinct country settings: Australia (high-income) and India (low-middle income) and examines the unique QoL issues. METHODS: Using a bottom-up sys…

Evaluation of graded recession of inferior oblique muscle for correction of different grades of V-pattern strabismus.

BACKGROUND: V pattern identification is essential for proper strabismus management. Graded recession is a tailored approach to treat inferior oblique overaction (IOOA). The aim is to evaluate the efficacy of graded recession of inferior oblique muscle for correction of different grades of V pattern. METHODS: Forty patients from 3 to 18 years old with V pattern strabismus and primary IOOA were evaluated by prism cover test to assess the grade of IOOA and amplitude of V-pattern. Graded recession of IO muscle depends on the amplitude of the V-pattern and degree of IOOA. Eight mm recession for am…

An improved strabismus screening method with combination of meta-learning and image processing under data scarcity.

PURPOSE: Considering the scarcity of normal and strabismic images, this study proposed a method that combines a meta-learning approach with image processing methods to improve the classification accuracy when meta-learning alone is used for screening strabismus. METHODS: The meta-learning approach was first pre-trained on a public dataset to obtain a well-generalized embedding network to extract distinctive features of images. On the other hand, the image processing methods were used to extract the position features of eye regions (e.g., iris position, corneal light reflex) as supplementary f…

Microstimulation of Interstitial Nucleus of Cajal Evokes Directionally Disconjugate Eye Movements in Monkeys With Pattern Strabismus.

PURPOSE: Pattern strabismus is characterized by a horizontal misalignment of the eyes that varies with vertical eye position. This disorder has traditionally been described, and treated, as overaction or underaction of the oblique muscles. In recent years, evidence has accumulated that indicate that the disorder is associated with abnormal cross-talk between brainstem pathways that contribute to the horizontal and vertical components of eye movements. The present study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that the key abnormalities are at the level of, or downstream from, the interstitia…

A comparative study of strabismus surgery with retained or removed scleral explant after retinal detachment surgery.

PURPOSE: To compare, in a larger study population, the outcomes of strabismus surgery in patients who either had the scleral explant (EX) retained or removed after surgery for retinal detachment. METHODS: A comparative retrospective study includes data from 2 centres. Surgical outcome, motor success, sensory success, the number of secondary operations for strabismus and complications were compared between the two groups. Motor success was defined as horizontal deviation of ≤6 prism diopters (PD) and vertical deviation of ≤6PD. Sensory success was defined as no diplopia without use of prism. …
