Magnetic resonance angiography in 140 neuropediatric patients.

Three-dimensional magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a noninvasive technique that images the intracranial arterial vasculature without contrast agents. The suitability of MRA was evaluated for routine use and all children were prospectively studied with conventional MR imaging and time off flight MRA (FISP3D). All MR studies were performed on a 1.5 T-MRA system using a circularly polarized head coil. The study comprised 140 children, ages 3 weeks to 18 years, with different neuropediatric diseases. Major cervical and intracranial arteries were visualized in all age groups. Smaller branche

A vision-based sign language recognition & voice conversion system for inclusive communication.

Major communication barriers are often encountered among deaf and/or speech-impaired people, which is particularly serious during emergencies. This study proposes a novel vision-based sign-to-voice conversion that recognizes hand gestures through a convolutional neural network incorporated with advanced preprocessing and transformer-based classification. A custom gesture dataset was created by capturing labeled images and video frames under different backgrounds, lighting conditions, and hand orientations for proper training. Skin filtering, background subtraction, noise removal, and extractio

Local-in-Time Conservative Binary Dynamics at Fifth Post-Minkowskian and First Self-Force Orders.

We report the local-in-time conservative dynamics of nonspinning binary systems at fifth post-Minkowskian (5PM) and first self-force (1SF) orders. This follows from an explicit calculation of the 5PM/1SF nonlocal-in-time tail-type contribution to the deflection angle via worldline effective field theory techniques. Proceeding as in Dlapa et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 132, 221401 (2024)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.132.221401], we subtract the nonlocal tail terms from the result in Driesse et al. [Phys. Rev. Vaccinomics to Design a Multiepitope Vaccine against Legionella pneumophila.

Legionella pneumophila is found in the natural aquatic environment and can resist a wide range of environmental conditions. There are around fifty species of Legionella, at least twenty-four of which are directly linked to infections in humans. L. pneumophila is the cause of Legionnaires' disease, a potentially lethal form of pneumonia. By blocking phagosome-lysosome fusion, L. pneumophila lives and proliferates inside macrophages. For this disease, there is presently no authorized multiepitope vaccine available. For the multi-epitope-based vaccine (MEBV), the best antigenic candidates were id

Imaging of Moyamoya Disease and Moyamoya Syndrome: Current Status.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) and Moyamoya syndrome (MMS) are referring to a progressive steno-occlusive vasculopathy at terminal portions of the bilateral internal carotid arteries and their proximal branches with prominent collateral artery formation. They can be found throughout the world and cause irreversible damage to the cerebral hemodynamics due to the progressive nature. Prompt diagnosis and accurate assessment could significantly improve the prognosis of MMD and MMS. Some imaging modalities could be used for diagnosis and nonquantitative evaluation of MMD and MMS, such as conventional compu

[Imaging of vessels supplying the brain].

Nowadays, several technically validated modalities are available for imaging both the extracranial and intracranial segments of arteries supplying blood to the brain. In the acute stroke setting, computed tomography (CT) angiography is of utmost importance because it provides the key diagnostic criteria indicative for the use of catheter-based recanalization techniques. Ultrasound imaging of extracranial arteries is most suitable for detecting an underlying stenosis of the internal carotid artery (ICA) in patients with stroke, transient ischemic attacks (TIA), retinal vessel occlusion and amau

Non-contrast-enhanced MR angiography in the diagnosis of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) compared with digital subtraction angiography (DSA): Preliminary results.

Non-CE MRA techniques (true steady-state free-precession, SSFP) have been used effectively for the selective visualization of the portal venous system and inferior vena cava. Budd-Chiari Syndrome (BCS) encompasses a number of conditions that cause the obstruction of the hepatic outflow tract from the small hepatic veins to the junction of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and right atrium. The purpose of this study was to diagnose BCS with IVC obstruction using respiratory triggered three-dimensional (3D) true SSFP with T-SLIP and compare to digital subtraction angiography (DSA). The image acquisit

Intraoperative imaging of the brain.

The development of computed imaging techniques has revolutionized contemporary neurosurgical procedures. In a 20-year interval, intraoperative imaging was used in more than 4,000 patients at our center. The selection of the appropriate intraoperative imaging tool was dependent on the neurosurgical procedure performed. In our dedicated operating room suite, intraoperative fluoroscopic imaging was used during transsphenoidal, spinal, and functional procedures, e.g. to treat percutaneous trigeminal neuralgia. A dedicated intraoperative computed tomography scanner was first available in 1981 and w

Pediatric renovascular hypertension.

Renovascular disease is a frequent cause of severe hypertension in children and may result in significant morbidity or mortality. Most children presenting with renovascular hypertension have few if any symptoms, but devastating neurologic injury and congestive heart failure are still too often observed. Several new radiographic techniques have been used to detect renovascular lesions, but none has yet demonstrated consistently superior results when compared with intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography. Renal venous renin sampling, duplex ultrasonography, and captopril-enhanced renal sci

Endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy: indications, technique and results.

Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) allows an obstructed lachrymal drainage system to be drained into the nasal fossa. Since the development of endonasal microsurgical techniques, the endonasal approach presents itself as an alternative choice to the conventional external approach. It is far less traumatic, yet as efficacious as the conventional approach, and avoids the need for a skin incision and the disruption of the medial canthal structures. Twenty-six patients suffering from lachrymal system obstruction underwent 28 endonasal dacryocystorhinostomies under microscopical (n = 25) or endoscopic con

Novel genes for potential ligand-binding proteins in subregions of the olfactory mucosa.

Odorant detection is specifically mediated via receptor neurons in the olfactory mucosa but is a complex process involving a number of different cell types producing proteins of differing function. We have used the technique of subtractive hybridization cDNA cloning to identify novel genes expressed exclusively in the olfactory mucosa which may play a role in olfaction. Ten distinct groups of cDNA clones were identified which corresponded to mRNA transcripts highly expressed in rat olfactory mucosa but undetectable in thymus, kidney, lung, brain, spleen and liver. Some of these clones identify

Nasal resistance during infancy.

Nasal Resistance (Rn) was measured in 30 Caucasian and 13 Negro infants during the 1st year of life, using an adaptation of the posterior rhinomanometric method. Concurrent measurements of Thoracic Gas Volume (TGV) and Airway Resistance during nose breathing (Raw (n) were made using the plethysmographic technique. The percentage contribution of Rn to Raw (n) was significantly higher in the Caucasian infants (mean 49.2 +/- 7.5 (SD)%), than in the Negro infants (mean 31.1 +/- 6.8 (SD)%), which probably resulted from anatomical differences in nasal structure. In each infant, Rn was subtracted fro

Gastrointestinal bleeding detection on digital subtraction angiography using convolutional neural networks with and without temporal information.

PURPOSE: Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) offers a real-time approach to locating lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. However, many sources of bleeding are not easily visible on angiograms. This investigation aims to develop a machine learning tool that can locate GI bleeding on DSA prior to transarterial embolization. METHODS: All mesenteric artery angiograms and arterial embolization DSA images obtained in the interventional radiology department between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2021, were analyzed. These images were acquired using fluoroscopy imaging systems (Siemens Healthi

Endovascular treatment of acute intracranial vertebral artery dissection: long-term follow-up results of internal trapping and reconstructive treatment using coils and stents.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular internal trapping is an effective procedure for the treatment of acute vertebral artery dissection (VAD). However, the outcomes of reconstructive treatment have not been well established. The aim of our study is to evaluate the long-term clinical and angiographic results of endovascular internal trapping or reconstructive treatment of acute VAD. METHODS: Between 2005 and 2013, 26 patients with acute VAD were managed with internal coil trapping (n=10), stent-assisted coiling (n=14), stent only (n=1), and proximal occlusion (n=1). Stent-assisted coiling included the mod

Ectopic parathyroid adenomas located at the carotid bifurcation: the role of preoperative Tc-99m MIBI scintigraphy and the intraoperative gamma probe procedure in surgical treatment planning.

PURPOSE: The prevalence of ectopic parathyroid adenoma (PA) is relatively low, despite some studies in which it has been reported to be as high as 20%. Ectopic PA is a frequent cause of surgical failure, and therefore some authors recommend preoperative imaging to localize the condition in patients with primary hyperparathyroid (HPT) disease before initial surgery. METHODS: Two unusual cases of primary HPT caused by an ectopic PA located at the carotid bifurcation are reported. The patients were examined before operation using Tc-99m MIBI scintigraphy and then underwent radioguided surgery us

Radionuclide constant pressure perfusion study on measurement of exit urine flow: experimental and preliminary clinical investigations.

To calculate exit urine flow from the renal pelvis to the bladder in hydronephrosis, a simple method, radionuclide constant pressure perfusion study, was used. The mathematical model proposed for calculation of the exit flow (F) was simple: F = (initial slope)/Do'/exp(-0.148d), where F is expressed as flow rate (ml. per minute) of infused radioactive solution into the bladder. The value of the initial slope is expressed as a count rate per minute of time-activity curve of the bladder. Do' is a count rate per ml. of infused radioactive solution, which was measured by a gamma camera in air, and
