Open Otoplasty Through Ventral Skin Incision and Abrasion of the Antihelix Under Vision.

BACKGROUND: Common otoplasties through incisions behind the ear with blind scoring or scratching the anterior perichondrium often leave an irregular surface of the antihelix. METHOD: To avoid these tiny side effects, a skin incision along the ventral antihelical fold (scapha) is used to thin and fold the flat antihelix under vision. After local anesthesia of the ventral ear skin, an incision along the scapha allows its blunt lifting toward the concha and to expose the cartilaginous antihelix. Its future shape is marked and the thickness of the cartilage is thinned with a dermabrader by approx

Refreshing labioplasty techniques for plastic surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Patient requests for plastic surgery of the female genitalia have become more common. There are several technical options to manage hypertrophic labia minora, including direct excision, wedge resection, and deepithelialization. Labia majora hypertrophy and hypoplasia can also be managed surgically. The aim of this study was to summarize labioplasty techniques to date, and describe the senior author's technique for labia minora and majora labioplasty. METHODS: Seventy-four patients underwent direct labia minora excision with or without clitoral hood molding and management of labia

The importance of advanced cardiac life support certification in office-based surgery.

BACKGROUND: Safety in office-based surgery remains of paramount importance. Accordingly, many consider Advanced Cardiac Life Support training a critical component of safety preparation for office-based surgery. A survey was recently designed and distributed to assess the experience and attitudes of board-certified plastic surgeons toward Advanced Cardiac Life Support training. METHODS: A two-page, 14-question survey was mailed to the 4581 members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The anonymous survey consisted of multiple choice questions eliciting status of Advanced Cardiac Life S

American Cleft-Palate Craniofacial Association Annual Meeting: International Medical Graduate's Perspective as a First-Time Attendee.

In the United States, plastic surgery continues to be one of the most competitive fields to match into for medical graduates. However, the process is even more difficult for international medical graduates (IMGs) mostly due to their unknown academic backgrounds and unfamiliarity with US health-care system. While many IMGs pursue of research to publish articles in peer-reviewed journals and obtain letters of recommendations as a means to prove one's potential, networking with well-known plastic surgeons in US plastic surgery programs via national meetings is of utmost importance. These conferen

Course Review-Ultrasound for Plastic Surgeons October 2024.

Ultrasound scanning is a noninvasive, radiation-free imaging modality, which allows real-time evaluation of anatomical structures and pathology. It has a variety of uses in plastic surgery, including evaluation of structural hand injuries, preoperative perforator mapping, postoperative monitoring, clinical evaluation of breast implants, assessment of soft tissue infections and collections, foreign bodies, and performing regional blocks. The Ultrasound for Plastic Surgeons course held in Manchester familiarizes attendees with the physics of ultrasound and ultrasound technique including probe se

Eating Disorders.

Eating disorders are incredibly common in patients seeking aesthetic plastic surgery, primarily due to body image dissatisfaction. Plastic surgeons have an important role in recognizing when patients' motivation for aesthetic surgery is rooted in an eating disorder. This article summarizes eating disorders to better equip plastic surgeons to identify patients who may have eating disorders and subsequently connect them with medical, nutritional, and psychological treatment, which are crucial in eating disorder recovery.

Preparing Patients for Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Procedures: Ensuring an Optimal Nutritional Status for Successful Results.

Aesthetic and cosmetic medical practices have attracted considerable consumer attention globally. However, possible complications vary and range from mild, self-resolving ecchymoses or edema to more persistent complications. The aim of this review is to identify the nutritional deficits or excesses associated with the major complications of reconstructive surgery, aesthetic surgery, and mini-invasive aesthetic procedures. An additional goal is to provide a bundle of actions for professionals working in the industry in order to reduce the risks of aesthetic procedures and improve the clinical o

A Case of Complex Facial Reconstruction Illuminates Paul Tessier's Surgical State of Mind.

Successful head and neck reconstructions tackle both morphological and functional issues within treatment plans involving multiple coordinated steps. Nowadays, biomaterials, computer-assisted surgery, and free tissue transfers have greatly increased the potentialities of craniofacial surgeons. In the 1970s, when Paul Tessier, one of the founders of modern plastic surgery, was at the peak of his career, complex reconstructions had little technology to rely on. Here we report a case of facial reconstruction after gunshot trauma performed by Paul Tessier based on his "craniofacial autarchy" princ

BACKGROUND: Patients, parents, and carers are increasingly using social media to access and contribute to health information. There are currently 3.484 billion active social media users. Instagram is a primarily visual social media platform for sharing photographs and videos with currently over one billion monthly active users. Limited research has investigated the use of Instagram in healthcare contexts including plastic surgery, and in the treatment of specific conditions, such as fibromyalgia and scoliosis. This study aimed to investigate the use of Instagram in relation to craniofacial sur

[Reconstruction of the burned hand].

Reconstruction of the burned hand requires detailed knowledge and surgical skills to develop a therapeutic concept for optimal functional outcomes through predictive planning. The key to success is to use a broad spectrum of plastic surgery and hand surgery techniques, individually applied to the patient's situation. In this overview article, we describe basic principles, timing of reconstruction, classification of deformities, and the corresponding techniques for surgical correction.

This article aimed to characterize, compare, and contrast the management of isolated orbital floor fractures among oculofacial and facial plastic surgeons in the United States. An anonymous 17-question multiple-choice web-based survey was distributed to all 590 members of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) and all 1,300 members of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) using each society's email database from November 2016 to January 2017. [Basic principles of reconstructive dermatosurgery in the head and neck region].

Plastic reconstructions in the head and neck region are common procedures in dermatology. However, the theoretical principles underlying these, which are the basis for successful surgery, are rarely taught in dermatology training. This summary of the basic theoretical concepts for plastic reconstructive surgery is intended to close this gap. Over the past 100 years, repeated attempts have been made to improve the technique of plastic reconstructive surgery and to make it more understandable though different concepts. This includes knowledge of the timing of reconstruction, the trophism of the

Nature or Artifice? Grafting in Early Modern Surgery and Agronomy.

In 1597, Gaspare Tagliacozzi published a famous two-volume book on “plastic surgery.” The reconstructive technique he described was based on grafting skin taken from the arm onto the mutilated parts of the patient's damaged face – especially noses. This paper focuses on techniques of grafting, the “culture of grafting,” and the relationships between surgery and plant sciences in the sixteenth century. By describing the fascination with grafting in surgery, natural history, gardening, and agronomy the paper argues that grafting techniques were subject to delicate issues: to what extent it was m
