Mycetoma (Madura foot): A Case Report of a Rare Tropical Disease in Turkey.

Mycetoma is a chronic discharging infection involving the skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia, and bone, which is endemic in tropical and subtropical countries. We report a rare case of mycetoma localized on the foot of a patient living in a country with a temperate climate. A 32-year-old male patient presented with painless swelling in the right foot. He had undergone surgery 3 years ago with the same complaints. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 90 × 65 × 37 mm cystic soft tissue lesion in the posterior of the right ankle. Histological analysis identified the fungus. Extensive resection wa

IgD ligation allows peritoneal cavity B cell proliferation.

Atypical cytokine production and immune cell subset ratios, particularly those that include high proportions of macrophages, characterize tumor microenvironments (TMEs). TMEs can be modeled by culturing peritoneal cavity (PerC) cells which have a high macrophage to lymphocyte ratio. With TCR or BCR ligation, PerC lymphocyte proliferation is tempered by macrophages. However, PHA (T cells) and anti-CD40 (B cells) are activators that induce proliferation. Herein, we report that ligating IgD, in contrast to IgM, triggers PerC B cell proliferation. IL-4 addition enhanced the IgD response for BALB/c

Sensitization to Aeroallergens in a Mexican Cohort with Allergic Conjunctivitis: A Cross-sectional Retrospective Study Conducted in Ángeles Puebla Hospital.

This study aims to evaluate the sensitization distribution of aeroallergens in patients with allergic conjunctivitis (AC) living in a temperate subhumid region and to describe the prevalence in a Mexican cohort. A total of 761 patient records were revisited, including the results of the skin prick test (SPT) for 45 aeroallergens. We found 292 patients with AC and a positive SPT in a 5-year period. The most frequent aeroallergens include dust mites (69.2% for Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and 47.6% for Dermatophagoides farinae), trees (36% for cypress and 22.6% for ash), animals (33.9% for dog

Lactic acid bacteria waste infusion as a source of attraction and oviposition stimulation of gravid female Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.

Aedes albopictus poses a public health risk in tropical countries and temperate countries in recent decades due to its capability to transmit various human arboviruses including dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Vector control is the key for preventing transmission of these pathogenic viruses. Improving the effectiveness of currently utilized collection methods, such as ovitraps, is important for best species abundance monitoring, assessment of the threat of arbovirus transmission, and optimizing control activities. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential use of lactic acid ba

Glass table tops: An unusual source of lethal domestic injury.

A 42-year-old woman who fell through a glass tabletop had her lower back pierced by a long shard of glass. She rapidly exsanguinated. At autopsy, a single penetrating wound was present in her left lower back, with complete transection of her left kidney and a 3.5 L haematoperitoneum. Death was due to exsanguination following accidental transection of the left kidney by a penetrating glass injury of the lower back. Glass-topped tables are a well-recognised source of injury in a domestic setting There are far more non-lethal than lethal injuries, many of which involve children. Quite long shards

A Review on Equine Piroplasmosis: Epidemiology, Vector Ecology, Risk Factors, Host Immunity, Diagnosis and Control.

Equine Piroplasmosis (EP) is a tick-borne disease caused by apicomplexan protozoan parasites, Babesia caballi and Theileria equi. The disease is responsible for serious economic losses to the equine industry. It principally affects donkeys, horses, mules, and zebra but DNA of the parasites has also been detected in dogs and camels raising doubt about their host specificity. The disease is endemic in tropical and temperate regions of the world where the competent tick vectors are prevalent. Infected equids remain carrier for life with T. equi infection, whilst, infection with B. caballi is clea

Ocular Manifestations of Mosquito-Transmitted Diseases.

Of the 3,548 known mosquito species, about 100 transmit human diseases. Mosquitoes are distributed globally throughout tropical and temperate regions where standing water sources are available for egg laying and the maturation of larva. Female mosquitoes require blood meals for egg production. This is the main pathway for disease transmission. Mosquitoes carry several pathogenic organisms responsible for significant ocular pathology and vision loss including West Nile, Rift Valley, chikungunya, dengue viruses, various encephalitis viruses, malarial parasites, Francisella tularensis, microfilar

Lyme disease: diagnosis and management.

Lyme disease (borreliosis) is a tick-borne bacterial infection caused by the spirochaete Borrelia burgdoferi, transmitted by hard-backed Ixodes ticks. Actual numbers of cases are increasing and it appears that the distribution across the UK is widening; however, it occurs most frequently in area of woodland, with temperate climate. It typically presents in mid to late summer. Lyme disease is a multisystem disease. The nervous system is the second most commonly affected system after the skin. Other systemic manifestations, such as carditis, keratitis, uveitis and inflammatory arthritis, rarely

Epidemiology of Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Aruba.

The epidemiology of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in tropical areas is different compared with developed countries. We investigated the epidemiology of GBS on the Caribbean island of Aruba. Data were collected retrospectively from all 36 patients hospitalized with GBS between 2003 and 2011 in Aruba. We observed a seasonal distribution of GBS cases with a peak in February. The incidence rate (IR) fluctuated heavily between individual years. The overall IR was 3.93/100,000, which is higher than that observed in developed countries. Serological studies indicated a possible relation of GBS cases w

Kumbhakarna: Did he suffer from the disorder of the hypothalamus?

Kumbhakarna was brother of the evil Raavana in the mythological tale of Ramayana. According the legend, Kumbhakarna had an insatiable appetite and thirst and used to sleep for great lengths of time. He also had an uncontrollable temper, which was feared by many. It is our assessment that Kumbhakarna possibly suffered from hypothalamic obesity. Hypothalamic obesity can be defined as significant polyphagia and weight gain that occurs because of structural or function involvement of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus bilaterally. The characteristic features are obesity associated with p

Glycine receptor antibodies in a boy with focal epilepsy and episodic behavioral disorder.

A wide range of clinical presentations including neuromuscular disorders and autoimmune encephalopathies is being recognized to be associated with various autoantibodies. Glycine receptor (GlyR) antibodies have so far been found mainly in adult patients with phenotypes comprising progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus or stiff-person syndrome. We report a four-year-old boy who presented with a two-year-history of drug-resistant focal epilepsy with unusual seizure semiology, temper tantrums, headache, clumsiness, and intermittently impaired speech. Solvent-dependent stabilization of metastable monolayer polymorphs at the liquid-solid interface.

Self-assembly of 1,3,5-tris(4'-biphenyl-4"-carbonitrile)benzene monolayers was studied at the liquid-solid interface by scanning tunneling microscopy. Application of different fatty acid homologues as solvents revealed a solvent-induced polymorphism. Yet, tempering triggered irreversible phase transitions of the initially self-assembled monolayers, thereby indicating their metastability. Interestingly, in either case, the same thermodynamically more stable and more densely packed monolayer polymorph was obtained after thermal treatment, irrespective of the initial structure. Again, the same de

Conducting model ecosystem studies in tropical climate zones: lessons learned from Thailand and way forward.

Little research has been done so far into the environmental fate and side effects of pesticides in the tropics. In addition, those studies conducted in tropical regions have focused almost exclusively on single species laboratory tests. Hence, fate and effects of pesticides on higher-tier levels have barely been studied under tropical conditions. To address this lack of knowledge, four outdoor aquatic model ecosystem experiments using two different test systems were conducted in Thailand evaluating the insecticide chlorpyrifos, the herbicide linuron and the fungicide carbendazim. Results of th

Neurology of endemic skeletal fluorosis.

Endemic skeletal fluorosis is widely prevalent in India and is a major public health problem. The first ever report of endemic skeletal fluorosis and neurological manifestation was from Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh in the year 1937. Epidemiological and experimental studies in the endemic areas suggest the role of temperate climate, hard physical labor, nutritional status, presence of abnormal concentrations of trace elements like strontium, uranium, silica in water supplies, high fluoride levels in foods and presence of kidney disease in the development of skeletal fluorosis. Neurologic

Occlusive hydrocephalus caused by a fourth ventricle arachnoid cyst.

The case history of a woman with occlusive hydrocephalus caused by a fourth ventricle cyst is presented. She had slowly progressive complaints and symptoms--concentration and memory disturbances, low-tempered mood, then slight dizziness, loss of appetite and progressive headache--transitorily misinterpreted for signs of depression. She had been treated by psychotherapy and antidepressants for months. Since she did not improve she was referred to a psychiatric hospital. The rapidly progressing neurological syndrome with worsening headache, gait disturbance and vomiting was finally identified an

Metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty.

Although metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (MOM THA) has been used for over 3 decades, substantial improvements in manufacturing and design have led to improved durability with modern implants. Reported advantages of the use of MOM THA include very low wear and subsequent osteolysis, increased range of motion to impingement secondary to the availability of larger diameter femoral heads, and the potential to monitor implant performance by serial assessment of metal ion levels. Clinical results of both first-generation and second-generation MOM THA have revealed good survivorship and a low i

Potential for biodegradation of hydrocarbons by microorganisms isolated from Antarctic soils.

Seventeen pure aerobic microbial isolates were obtained from soil samples of three regions of Antarctica: Casey Station, Dewart Island and Terra Nova Bay. Most of them were gram positive coryneform bacteria. Isolates were tested for their ability to grow on mineral salt agar plates supplemented with one of the following model n-alkanes or aromatic hydrocarbons: hexane, heptane, paraffin, benzene, toluene, naphthalene and kerosene. Cell hydrophobicity, the ability to produce anionic glycolipids and extracellular emulsifying activity were also determined and assessed on the basis of growth of so

['Intervening is representing': medical campaigns that helped identify the prevalence of hookworm].

This paper compares anti-hookworm campaigns conducted in the early twentieth century in France, Germany, Brazil and West India. The populations that suffer from hookworm are not identical in the North and in the South. In tropical and semi-tropical regions hookworm is mainly found among poor peasants and is related to lack of hygiene, while in temperate climates hookworm was a professional disease of miners, a highly organized professional segment. Nevertheless, major disparities in the pattern of hookworm control did not reflect the North-South divide, but a difference between campaigns. Thes
