BACKGROUND: Although tuberculosis preventive therapy guidelines support testing for tuberculosis infection in household contacts (HHCs), this adds operational complexity and cost and has often been abandoned. To understand utility of testing, we determined prevalence and risk factors for tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis preventive therapy eligibility among HHCs.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study conducted from July 2021 to September 2022 in Lesotho, South Africa, and Tanzania, we enrolled people with microbiologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis and their HHCs. HHCs were screene

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a highly transmissible infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and remains a major global public health problem. Household contacts of patients with smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis are at increased risk due to prolonged and close exposure within shared living environments. However, evidence on the bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis burden and associated factors among adult household contacts in Southwest Ethiopia remains limited.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the occurrence of bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis and identify as

BACKGROUND: It remains challenging to differentiate tuberculosis (TB) from non-TB pulmonary infections in HIV-infected patients. Herein, we developed a scoring system aimed to rapidly determine the likelihood of TB or non-TB pathology in HIV-infected patients presenting with pulmonary infections.
METHODS: We collected and collated data of hospitalized HIV-infected patients with pulmonary infections, followed by univariate and multivariate data analyses to determine risk variables that were significantly different between HIV/TB patients and HIV/non-TB patients. Subsequently, a regression coef

INTRODUCTION: Screening for multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (MDR-PTB) by using the Xpert MTB/ RIF test to detect rifampicin resistance as a surrogate marker for this form of tuberculosis may lead to suboptimal treatment if resistance to other drugs in the treatment regimen is not also determined. The objective of this study was to analyze the patterns of drug resistance to anti-tuberculosis drugs in patients with rifampicin-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (RR-PTB) who were treated with the standardized 9-11-month regimen in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospect

PURPOSE: We evaluated the performance of the Abbott RealTime Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) PCR (RT MTB) on bronchoscopic specimens using conventional culture as the reference standard in a low-Tuberculosis (TB) prevalence setting.
METHODS: A total of 6,988 specimens (4,682 bronchial aspirates [BAS] and 2,306 bronchoalveolar lavages [BAL]) from 4,118 patients with suspected pulmonary TB were included. When BAS and BAL specimens from the same bronchoscopy procedure were available, these were mixed 1:1 prior to culture inoculation and PCR testing. Following processing, specimens were inoculat

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major plague of humanity. People with TB (PWTB) are commonly anemic. Here, we assessed whether the severity of anemia in PWTB prior to anti-TB treatment (ATT) was a risk factor for an unfavorable outcome.
METHODS: Patients ≥ 18 years old with culture-confirmed drug-susceptible pulmonary TB enrolled between 2015 and 2019 in a multi-center Brazilian cohort were followed for up to 24 months and classified according to anemia severity (mild, moderate, and severe), based on hemoglobin levels. A multinomial logistic regression model was employed to assess whe

Tuberculosis may be accompanied by various hematological abnormalities during treatment, and occasionally thrombocytopenia is also noted. Most cases of thrombocytopenia in tuberculosis are moderate, and there are few reports about thrombocytopenia with diffuse alveolar hemorrhaging (DAH) in pulmonary tuberculosis. We describe the case of an 82-year-old man with pulmonary tuberculosis and tuberculous pleurisy. He underwent anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy; during tuberculosis treatment, he experienced DAH due to fulminant thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia is a common finding in patients with pul

A 62-year-old man was diagnosed with the onset of tuberculosis (Tb) from a pulmonary latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) during triple therapy with pegylated interferon α2a, ribavirin, and telaprevir for a chronic hepatitis C infection in 2013 before interferon (IFN)-free anti-viral therapy was introduced in Japan. A liver biopsy before IFN treatment revealed the presence of epithelioid cell granulomas (ECGs). IFN may also be employed for chronic hepatitis B infection and malignant tumors, thus, special attention must be paid to the development of Tb from a LTBI when ECGs are observed before

OBJECTIVES: To compare the characteristics of confirmed vs suspected cases of urogenital tuberculosis (UGTB) in a geographic region with an extremely high prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis. UGTB is notoriously difficult to diagnose.
METHODS: A retrospective clinical record review was performed of 68 patients treated from March 1998 to July 2007. Group 1 (n = 45) had UGTB confirmed by microbiologic or histologic examination. Group 2 (n = 23) had a high suspicion of UGTB because of the clinical features, but no microbiologic or histologic confirmation. The data were collected and statistical

There is urgent need for rapid diagnostic methods to identify tuberculosis among the HIV positive cases, since the mortality is high. We have isolated and evaluated the serodiagnostic potential of the 30kDa secreted antigen and 16kDa cytosolic antigen of M. tuberculosis, among the HIV-TB patients. Antibody response was studied using Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. In the HIV-TB group, antibody was found to be 65%, 69% and 6% positive for IgG, A and M isotypes, respectively, against 30kDa. The sensitivity increased to 84%, upon combination of the results of 3 isotypes. Anti-16kDa was detecte

BACKGROUND: Pediatric tuberculosis is an important subset of tuberculosis infection burden with a high detection gap due to paucibacillary nature. GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay detects rifampicin resistant (RR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) that provides bacillary load and mutation/probe details. The present study aimed to study the frequency of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and rifampicin resistance (RR) in relation to bacillary load, age and gender in pediatric patients, at tertiary care referral center.
METHODS: In the present study 5110 patients were screened for tuberculosi

Mycobacterium malmoense is a rare species of non-tuberculosis mycobacteria detected in Japan that causes pulmonary infection and cervical lymphadenitis. Here, we report a case of pulmonary infection caused by M. malmoense, which was difficult to distinguish from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. A 64-year-old Japanese woman with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis had bloody phlegm, a cough, and discomfort in her chest. Chest computed tomography revealed a cavity, infiltration, and a nodule. A smear test for acid-fast bacilli was positive, a Mycobacterium avium complex transcription

Pulmonary tuberculosis is an infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is an obligate aerobic microbe. Tuberculosis is a multisystemic disease that can attack the respiratory system, genitourinary system, central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, and the skeletal framework of the body. However, the most commonly affected system is the respiratory system (pulmonary tuberculosis). Tuberculosis is an ancient infection that affects millions of people every year, and even after adequate treatment, it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, which can be attributed

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It primarily affects the lungs but can also spread to other body parts. One of the possible symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is hemoptysis. In the case of TB, aspergillomas can develop in the cavitary lesions of TB and result in a deteriorating clinical situation. The current case report describes a 63-year-old female previously treated for TB who presented with hemoptysis, fever, and a 4 cm focal density in the right upper lobe on chest X-ray. The patient was found to have concomitant TB and aspergillosis, mani
