Extrapulmonary tuberculosis--a simple diagnosis? A retrospective study at Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Data from the national tuberculosis programme show that extrapulmonary tuberculosis is increasing rapidly in Tanzania, most likely caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic. Retrospective data from 271 patients admitted to Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC), Dar es Salaam between January 1, 1987 and December 31, 1988 with the diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis reveal that in only 18% of the cases a bacteriological or histological confirmation of the diagnosis had been made. This figure is only 3% when the tuberculous lymphadenitis cases are excluded. The most common diagnosis

Efficacy of single-stage posterior surgery for HIV-positive patients with thoracolumbar tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to observe the clinical effect of single-stage posterior surgery on HIV-positive patients with thoracolumbar tuberculosis. METHODS: From October 2015 to October 2019, 13 HIV-positive patients with thoracolumbar tuberculosis who underwent single-stage posterior surgery were retrospectively analyzed (observation group), and 13 HIV-negative patients with thoracolumbar tuberculosis who were matched with the gender, age, operative site, and surgical approach during the same period were selected as the control group. Postoperative complications, hemoglobin, albumin, CD4+T lympho

Bone and joint tuberculosis in paediatrics: a 13-year retrospective study.

Introduction. Bone and joint tuberculosis (BJTB) is rare in developed countries, particularly in the paediatric population.Hypothesis/Gap Statement. The clinical features and sequelae of paediatric BJTB in Europe are not well characterized and should be assessed to achieve a better approach.Aim. To assess the management and outcomes of paediatric BJTB.Methodology. Longitudinal observational study of all paediatric patients (0-17 years old) diagnosed with BJTB between 2008 to 2020 in a tertiary-care hospital.Results. We identified 18 patients with BJTB, with a median age of 10 years (IQR 6-14.8

A comparative study of pyogenic and tuberculous spondylodiscitis.

STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective review of 126 cases of infectious spondylodiscitis over a 4-year period. OBJECTIVE: Differentiation between pyogenic spondylodiscitis (PS) and tuberculous spondylodiscitis (TS) is essential for deciding on the appropriate therapeutic regimen. The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of the 2 forms of spondylodiscitis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There has been much effort to distinguish the radiologic findings in PS versus TS, but classification based on radiologic findings alone had limitations yet. METHODS: We compared the predisp

An Unexpected Limp: A Pediatric Case of Pott's Disease and a Literature Review.

Pott's disease, also known as tuberculous spondylodiscitis, accounts for 50% of all forms of skeletal tuberculosis. It is rare in children, especially in low-burden TB countries. We present a case of Pott's disease with miliary tuberculosis in a 22-month-old child. Furthermore, we provide an exploratory literature review of pediatric cases published in PubMed and Scopus between January 2000 and August 2025, including patients aged 0 to 17 years with confirmed or clinically diagnosed tuberculous spondylodiscitis. Sixty-four cases were included. Most cases (81.3%) involved children from highly e

[Evaluation using QFT-2G/TBGL/LAM in the patients with osteoarticular tuberculosis of post-treatment period].

PURPOSE: To evaluate results of QFT-2G/TBGL/ LAM in patients who had been completed the antituberculosis treatment for osteoarticular tuberculosis with various periods after the completion of the treatment, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-five patients who had been completed the antituberculosis treatment for osteoarticular tuberculosis at least one year after the completion of treatment were evaluated using QFT-2G/TBGL/LAM tests. Forty patients with spinal tuberculosis and 15 patients with articular tuberculosis were included. The patients with the period after the completion of the treatment l

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility, clinical indications and significance of one-stage radical eradication, wedged vertebral osteotomy and instrumentation in the treatment of tuberculosis of thoracic and lumbar spine associated with kyphosis or scoliokyphosis through a purely posterior procedure. METHODS: Sixteen cases with tuberculosis of thoracic and lumbar spine associated with kyphosis or scoliokyphosis were treated by one-stage radical eradication, wedged vertebral osteotomy and instrumentation fixation through posterior procedure. Concurrent intra-medullary and intra-cranial tuberculomas.

Although tuberculosis of the central nervous system is well known, the incidence of intra-medullary tuberculomas is low and a combination of intra-medullary with intra-cranial tuberculomas is extremely rare. This communication reports a case of disseminated (intra-medullary, intra-cerebellar and intra-cerebral) tuberculomas in a six-year-old girl initially presenting with a spinal tumour syndrome. Conservative treatment with anti-tuberculous medications and a short course of injectable steroids resulted in complete resolution of her symptoms.

The changed pattern of bone and joint tuberculosis in Norway.

The reduced incidence of bone and joint tuberculosis in Western countries and the change in the age groups afflicted are well known facts. In addition, there are other less conspicuous changes: multiple lesions and involvement of the spine and sacro-iliac joints are rarer than before, while trochanteric involvement is becoming more frequent. In spinal cases the lesion is now more often localized to the dorsal region. All these changes may be due to the change in age distribution of the patients.

Coexıstence of advanced age and female gender in dıabetıcs wıth extrapulmonary tuberculosıs: four culture-proven cases.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between diabetes mellitus (DM) and tuberculosis (TB) has long been known, but the extent of the relationship has only recently been demonstrated. It has been suggested that the presence of DM could triple the risk of TB. OBJECTIVE: Within the clinical picture of culture-proven TB, we examined the coexistence of TB, DM, and advanced age in 4 diabetic female elderly patients. CASE SUMMARY: Four cases of women with meningitis, bone TB, spondylodiscitis, and meningitis and spondylodiscitis are presented. All patients were diabetic and aged 50 to 79 years. Mycobacteri

Neurotuberculosis: an overview.

Although pulmonary tuberculosis is the most common form of this disease, neurotuberculosis is more severe and presents higher morbidity and mortality. Its diagnosis continues to challenge physicians all over the world. Contributing to this fact is the nonspecificity of its clinical manifestations, the low density of bacilli in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and the delayed recovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis through culture techniques. Thus, the diagnosis is largely based on suspicious symptoms, and the prognosis is directly related to the stage of the disease at the beginning of treatment.

Nonimmobilization of surgically treated tuberculosis of spine in children.

Tuberculosis of the spine is still one of the major health problems in developing countries. The treatment is prolonged and the morbidity considerable. The children are kept off active play for many months. Because of the duration of the disease the treatment is expensive for the class of patients usually afflicted by this disease. The older conservative treatment by chemotherapy, found to be inefficient and inadequate, is now being replaced in most world centres by surgical debridement of the tubercular focus. However, these surgical procedures are usually followed and often preceded by attem
