Universal versus targeted chlorhexidine and mupirocin decolonisation and clinical and molecular epidemiology of Staphylococcus epidermidis bloodstream infections in patients in intensive care in Scotland, UK: a controlled time-series and longitudinal genotypic study.

BACKGROUND: There are concerns that biocide skin and mucous membrane decolonisation, which is widely used to prevent health-care-associated infections in intensive care units (ICUs), might select for multidrug-resistant pathogens. We aimed to evaluate the effects of de-escalating from universal to targeted skin and nasal decolonisation on Staphylococcus epidermidis bloodstream infections (SE-BSI). METHODS: We did a retrospective, before-after-control-impact time-series analysis and longitudinal genotypic study in two ICUs with divergent decolonisation practice in tertiary care hospitals of ad

Indicated vs universal third-trimester ultrasound examination in low-risk pregnancies: a pre-post-intervention study.

BACKGROUND: In low-risk pregnancies, a third-trimester ultrasound examination is indicated if fundal height measurement and gestational age discrepancy are observed. Despite potential improvement in the detection of ultrasound abnormality, prior trials to date on universal third-trimester ultrasound examination in low-risk pregnancies, compared with indicated ultrasound examination, have not demonstrated improvement in neonatal or maternal adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to determine if universal third-trimester ultrasound examination in low-risk pregnancies could atten

The transition to magic bullets - transition state analogue drug design.

In the absence of industry partnerships, most academic groups lack the infrastructure to rationally design and build drugs via methods used in industry. Instead, academia needs to work smarter using mechanism-based design. Working smarter can mean the development of new drug discovery paradigms and then demonstrating their utility and reproducibility to industry. The collaboration between Vern Schramm's group at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, USA and Peter Tyler at the Ferrier Research Institute at The Victoria University of Wellington, NZ has refined a drug discovery process called

The effects of peer health education on alcohol consumption behaviour among university students in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is a widespread public health issue, contributing to numerous health conditions, particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In Nigeria, alcohol is culturally significant, often associated with socializing and respect. However, early alcohol use and high consumption rates among university students pose serious health risks. Peer health education has shown promise as an intervention to reduce risky health behaviours, including alcohol use. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study involved university students in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, assessing alcohol consu

Comparison of Surgery and Medicine on the Impact of Diverticulitis (COSMID) trial: a protocol for a pragmatic randomised study of diverticulitis treatment in the USA.

INTRODUCTION: Each year, millions of people experience recurrent diverticulitis episodes. Elective sigmoid colon resection reduces the risk of recurrence, but The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons recommends individualising surgical decisions based on the impact of the condition on a patient's quality of life (QoL). However, no threshold for QoL impairment has been established to guide decision-making, and evidence comparing elective colectomy with medical management in terms of QoL limitation is limited. To address these gaps and to guide treatment decision-making, we designed the

Mental health trajectories among Malaysian university students: A repeated cross-sectional study.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound effect on university students' mental health worldwide. As debates continue about whether these negative impacts will persist or gradually diminish over time, this study examined changes in mental health indicators and protective factors among Malaysian university students between the late-pandemic period (2023) and the post-pandemic recovery phase (2025). Using a repeated cross-sectional design, two independent samples of full-time Malaysian university students aged 18-24 years were surveyed (2023: n = 547; 2025: n = 551). Participants completed validated

Construction and Comparison of Molecular Identification Methods for Mannheimia haemolytica.

Mannheimia haemolytica is a primary pathogen causing bacterial pneumonia in cattle and sheep. Multiple PCR targets exist for its identification, but no standardized primer pairs have been widely adopted. This study evaluated the universality of six reported primers (including rpt2) using clinical M. haemolytica isolates. Genus specificity was tested against standard strains of common ruminant pathogenic/commensal bacteria and other Mannheimia species. Four primer sets (gcp, artJ-lktC, lktD, sodA) failed to distinguish M. haemolytica from other Mannheimia species. The rpt2 primer showed subopti

Expanding a primary prevention program to address sexual and gender-based violence among health sciences students in Ghana: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is a human rights and social justice issue that impacts individuals worldwide, particularly university students. The literature demonstrates that culturally and contextually tailored programs to reduce and ultimately prevent SGBV for university students have received little priority in sub-Saharan African countries. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and safety of the peer-delivered Relationship Tidbits intervention for use with health science students in Ghana. DESIGN: We conducted a pilot feasibility tes

Motivating Seasonal Influenza Vaccination and Cross-Promoting COVID-19 Vaccination: An Audience Segmentation Study among University Students.

In the response to the coronavirus pandemic, much attention has been invested in promoting COVID-19 vaccination. However, the impact of seasonal influenza should not be neglected, particularly during the winter influenza surge. Currently, most influenza vaccination campaigns target at healthcare workers or high-risk population groups, while COVID-19 vaccination programmes are targeting the whole population as a single homogeneous group. There is limited research on the promotion of influenza vaccination for university students who study, live, and socialise in close contact with a large variet

Are psychology university student gamblers representative of non-university students and general gamblers? A comparative analysis.

Students recruited from psychology undergraduate university populations are commonly used in psychology research, including gambling studies. However, the extent to which the use of this subpopulation produces findings that can be extrapolated to other groups is questionable. The present study was designed to compare results from university-recruited psychology student gamblers to those obtained from a sample of gamblers recruited from the general population that also included students. An online survey measuring gambling behavior and Internet gambling, attitudes and knowledge about gambling a
