In a study of 2224 adult women from the cytology clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, the prevalence of 'specific vaginal infection' (i.e. Gardnerella vaginalis, Trichomonas vaginalis and Candida albicans) was 14.5%. We studied a total of 105 women in late pregnancy in intervals of 2 to 4 weeks. At each prenatal visit we asked about the frequency of coital activity during the last 2 weeks, and took a vaginal smear for gram-staining. A case of concurrent intrauterine and advanced ovarian pregnancy is reported. The condition was discovered after spontaneous vaginal delivery of the intrauterine baby. Laparotomy was performed on the day after delivery of the first baby and only then was ovarian pregnancy diagnosed and later confirmed histologically; a macerated fetus was excised from the ovarian mass at laparotomy. The intrauterine baby was discharged alive along with the mother 12 days after the operation.

CONCLUSIONS: MV was associated with pruritus, vaginal discharge, and colpitis, whereas BV was more often asymptomatic and associated with specific anaerobic bacteria. Both lactobacilli and anaerobes are often present in MV, with C. albicans being the most common fungus.
