[Living with achondroplasia- how do young persons with disproportional short stature rate their quality of life and which factors are associated with quality of life?].

OBJECTIVE: Presently, little is known aqout the quality of life (QoL) as well as the strengths and difficulties of young people with achondroplasia. This study describes these patient-reported indicators and identifies possible correlates. METHOD: At the invitation of a patient organization, a total of 89 short-statured patients aged 8 to 28 years and their parents participated in this study. QoL was assessed cross-sectionally with both generic and disease-specific instruments and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) as a brief behavioral screening. In addition to descriptive an

Would you work if you won the lottery? Tracking changes in the American work ethic.

Although many social scientists and political commentators have speculated that the American work ethic is in decline, the last longitudinal study of this issue was conducted by Vecchio (1980) on data collected over 30 years ago. Vecchio examined whether workers would wish to continue working even if it were not financially necessary (i.e., the so-called lottery question from the National Opinion Research Center survey) and concluded that there had been a significant decline in work ethic since the 1950s. In the current study, the authors used an updated data set that included data from 1980 t

Biological monitoring of carbon disulphide and phthalate exposure in the contemporary rubber industry.

OBJECTIVES: We studied the range in urinary levels of 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxyl acid (TTCA), a metabolite of CS2 and phthalic acid (PA), a common metabolite of phthalates, across factories and departments in the contemporary rubber manufacturing industry. METHODS: Spot urine samples from 101 rubber workers employed in nine different factories were collected on Sunday and during the workweek on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at approximately 4 pm. In total, 386 urine samples were successfully analyzed. RESULTS: Levels of both biomarkers increased significantly by a factor 2 (paired t-tes

The greater good?: issues of proportionality and democracy in the doctrine of necessity as applied in Re A.

This article examines the criminal law doctrine of necessity as applied in the conjoined twins case (Re A (Children) (Conjoined Twins: Surgical Separation) [2000] 4 All ER 961). It determines that the public law principle of proportionality underlies the doctrine, but identifies the preservation of life as the guiding principle behind the Court of Appeal's use of necessity in Re A. The article is critical of this elevation of the preservation of life under the doctrine of necessity and argues for an alternative conception of necessity based upon fundamental constitutional principles such as hu

Transplantation for primary biliary cirrhosis.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) remains one of the commoner indications for orthotopic liver replacement. The two main indications for transplantation are poor quality of life (because of the liver) or end-stage liver disease. A number of prognostic models have identified risk factors indicating poor prognosis, but in practice serum bilirubin greater than 150 mumol/L is used most commonly. Other indications for transplantation include progression of hepatopulmonary syndrome, increasing osteoporosis, evidence of malnutrition, and development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Postoperatively, patient

Therapeutic homicide: a philosophic and Halakhic critique of Harris' 'survival lottery'.

In a well-known paper entitled, 'Survival Lottery', published in a philosophical journal, John Harris proposed for discussion an interesting idea for saving the lives of certain kinds of patients who are at the point of death. Let us assume that there are two such patients, one that could be saved by a heart transplant, and the other by the transplantation of a pair of lungs. However, no suitable organs are available for this purpose. Might it perhaps not be immoral to select, by national lottery, a healthy person, who would be sacrificed, his organs used as transplants, and thus two lives be

Use of Thiel-embalmed cadavers in urology training and their ability to retain real-life anatomy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Thiel-embalmed cadavers (TeCs) have been proposed as an alternative and probably safer method of surgical training, compared to formalin-embalmed cadavers. We aimed to perform a systematic review on the use of TeCs in urology training and their ability to represent real-life anatomy. METHODS: PubMed, SCOPUS and Cochrane databases were searched for articles with purpose to explore the use of TeCs in urology training, without date restrictions, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. From each paper, we evaluated the ty

Cost-Effectiveness of Prophylactic Naldemedine for Opioid-Induced Constipation in Patients with Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Clinical guidelines recommend naldemedine for opioid-induced constipation in patients with cancer, either with conventional laxatives or as a first-choice option. Making prophylactic naldemedine a new standard treatment for opioid-induced constipation requires a demonstration of its value for money. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of prophylactic naldemedine in patients with cancer initiating strong opioid therapy. DESIGN: We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of prophylactic naldemedine replacing standard, nonprophylactic use from the payer's perspec

Association between Direct-Acting Agents Adherence and Health-Related Quality of Life of Patients with Hepatitis C.

This observational study included all patients undergoing HCV treatment with direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-based therapy between May 2020 and September 2023 at the Dolj County Hospital, Romania. The aim was to investigate adherence to DAAs among HCV patients and the effect of this treatment on their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Chronic HCV-infected patients were prospectively evaluated at baseline (T0), before the beginning of treatment, and 12 weeks after completing DAAs treatment (T1). The HCV-AD10 questionnaire was used to measure DAAs adherence, and HRQoL was assessed with the 1

Fetal Lung Volume Appears to Predict Respiratory Morbidity in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is associated with pulmonary hypoplasia and respiratory morbidity. To assess whether respiratory morbidity during the first 2 years of life in infants with left-sided CDH is associated with fetal lung volume (FLV) evaluated by the observed-to-expected FLV ratio (o/e FLV) on antenatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this retrospective study, o/e FLV measures were collected. Respiratory morbidity in the first 2 years of life was studied according to two endpoints: treatment with inhaled corticosteroids for >3 consecutive months and hospitalization for a

The Hypoplasic Mandible: What Makes it Different From the Healthy Child?

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the morphology of the hypoplasic mandible and its evolution during the growth period to better understand how it differs from the pediatric healthy mandible. METHOD: Three-dimensional mandibular models of hypoplasic and healthy children aged from 39 gestational weeks to 7 years old were analyzed with a morphometric method including data clustering. Morphological distinctions between pathological and healthy mandibles were highlighted. Bilateral and unilateral mandibular hypoplasia were distinguished. RESULTS: The study sample was composed of 31 hypoplas

Stability of Danish Population Health Preferences Over Time.

OBJECTIVES: This study tested the stability of Danish population health preferences by comparing data collected in 2024 with data from the 2019 Danish EQ-5D-5L valuation study. This period included the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. METHODS: Data were collected through (1) 100 virtual interviews following the standardized EQ-VT protocol generating composite time trade-off (cTTO) and discrete choice experiment (DCE) data as in the 2019 study, and (2) an online survey of 1000 respondents generating DCE data. Both samples were matched to the 2019 study. Mean cTTO values were compared

Defining Utility Values for Chorea Health States in Patients with Huntington's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Chorea is characterized by sudden, involuntary movements that interfere with quality of life (QOL). Utility values measure preferences for different health states and reflect societal perceived disease severity. To date, no studies have reported utility values specifically for Huntington's disease (HD) chorea. We estimated impact on QOL of HD chorea severity using utility values from the general population. METHODS: Participants were enrolled using computer-assisted telephone interviews. Participants read vignettes describing four health states for varying levels of chorea sever

Inflammatory Response in Exacerbations of COPD: Clinical and Predictive Roles of C-Reactive Protein.

Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (ECOPD) are pivotal events that accelerate lung function decline, impair quality of life, and increase the risk of hospitalization and mortality. Beyond episodic airway deterioration, ECOPD should be conceptualized as a systemic inflammatory syndrome driven by dysregulated responses to infectious or environmental triggers. Among inflammatory biomarkers, C-reactive protein (CRP) is the most extensively studied in ECOPD because of its rapid kinetics, wide availability, and clinical accessibility. This narrative review aims to summarize

Willingness to pay for mortality risk reduction for traffic accidents in Myanmar.

The dramatic increase in vehicle ownership in Myanmar over the past few years has resulted in an alarming increase in traffic accidents. Thus, road safety at the national level needs to be improved urgently in order to reduce the costs associated with traffic accidents and to assist policy makers in making economically efficient resource allocation decisions for road safety improvements. This research was conducted to determine the costs related to fatality risk reductions using a willingness to pay (WTP) approach for motorcyclists, car drivers, and bus passengers in Myanmar. Conditions associated with circulating tumor-associated folate receptor 1 protein in healthy men and women.

BACKGROUND: Serum concentrations of the tumor-associated folate receptor 1 (FOLR1) protein may be a marker for early cancer detection, yet concentrations have also been detected in cancer-free women. We investigated the conditions associated with circulating FOLR1 protein in healthy individuals and sought to clarify the range of normal serum values. METHODS: Sera of cancer-free men and women (N = 60) enrolled in a population-based cohort study in Alberta, Canada were analyzed for FOLR1 protein using an electrochemical luminescence immunoassay. Epilogue: continuing points of contention in the recovered memory debate.

Four contentious issues in the recovered memory debate are explored. Volume contributors offer differing perspectives on the generalizability of laboratory research, on the role of emotion in memory, on the prevalence of false recoveries, and on the motivations that underlie differences in opinion, especially with regard to whether the debate ought to be framed within a larger sociopolitical context. The recovered memory debate is argued to center on two ethical concerns that happen to be in conflict, equality among groups on one hand and due process protections on the other. Additional moveme
