Asymmetric Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Pediatric Vestibular Migraine.

OBJECTIVE: Although ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP) abnormalities have been associated with vestibular migraine (VM) in adults, no studies have evaluated this in pediatric patients with VM. oVEMP asymmetry with normal cervical VEMP (cVEMP) findings may be a reliable VM biomarker in adults. We characterize VEMP results among pediatric patients with VM and benign recurrent vertigo of childhood (BRVC), a migraine precursor, and compare these results with VEMP findings from pediatric patients with nonmigrainous vestibular diagnoses. METHODS: Four hundred seventy-four pediatri

Audio-vestibular and radiological analysis in Meniere's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Intravenous gadolinium-enhanced inner ear magnetic resonance imaging (IV Gd-enhanced inner ear MRI) is a new technique for diagnosing Meniere's disease (MD). Vestibular tests have also long been used for MD, but which tests should be included in the oto-neurological test battery remains controversial. The evaluation method to be used to confirm the clinical diagnosis in MD is not clear. This study aimed to examine the results of vestibular tests and IV Gd-enhanced inner ear MRI in individuals diagnosed with unilateral definite Meniere's disease. METHODS: IV Gd-enhanced inner ear MR

The short-term effect of COVID-19 on the cochleovestibular system in pediatric patients.

OBJECTIVES: The audio-vestibular equivalent of neurological symptoms secondary to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been discussed; however, it has not been fully clarified. Although it has been reported that the vestibulocochlear system is affected in adult coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients, there is no study in the literature in which the pediatric patient group with COVID-19 was evaluated comprehensively with auditory and vestibular tests. In this study, the short-term damage caused by SARS-CoV-2 in the vestibulocochlear system in pediatric patients

The Value of Subjective Visual Vertical in Diagnosis of Vestibular Migraine.

OBJECTIVE: To study the value of the subjective visual vertical (SVV) in the diagnosis of vestibular migraine (VM). METHODS: This study recruited 128 VM patients and 64 age-matched normal subjects. We detected the SVV during the interval between attacks in both groups, in sitting upright, and the head tilted at 45° to the left or right. We then examined the correlation between the SVV results with the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) and canal paresis (CP). RESULTS: It was found there was a significant difference in SVV at the upright position between VM patients and normal contro

Postural Control in Subjects with Incomplete Partition Inner Ear Malformations: A Comparison of Incomplete Partition Types.

INTRODUCTION: Children with inner ear malformation (IEM) are at risk of vestibular loss as well as hearing loss. Incomplete partition (IP) anomalies constitute about 41% of all IEMs. This study aimed to investigate the postural control in subjects with the same type of IP on both sides and to compare their results with cochlear implant (CI) users without IEM and healthy peers. METHODS: The study group consists of 17 subjects with the same IP types on both sides and using auditory implants on at least one side, with the following 3 groups: 6 IP-I subjects (mean age 12.28 ± 6.25), 6 IP-II subje

A novel method of identifying inner ear malformation types by pattern recognition in the mid modiolar section.

Identification of the inner ear malformation types from radiographs is a complex process. We hypothesize that each inner ear anatomical type has a uniqueness in its appearance in radiographs. The outer contour of the inner ear was captured from the mid-modiolar section, perpendicular to the oblique-coronal plane, from which the A-value was determined from CT scans with different inner ear anatomical types. The mean A-value of normal anatomy (NA) and enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome (EVAS) anatomical types was greater than for Incomplete Partition (IP) type I, II, III and cochlear hypoplas

Magnetic Resonance 3D Measurement of the Endolymphatic Space in 100 Control Human Subjects.

Three Dimensional-magnetic resonance imaging of the inner ear endolymphatic space was performed in 100 control human subjects. Ear endolymphatic space was visualized using contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging with intravenous gadolinium injection. The images were acquired on a 3-tesla magnetic resonance scanner using a 32-channel array head coil for all patients. The ear endolymphatic space and total fluid space volumes of the inner ear, cochlea, and vestibule were measured, and the ear endolymphatic space in the cochlea and vestibule was classified into four categories. The cochlea ca

The real identity and sensory overlap mechanism of special vestibular afferent neurons that sense both rotation and linear force.

AIMS: Although the vestibular system has been widely investigated over the past 50 years, there is still an unsolved mystery. Some special vestibular afferent (SVA) neurons responding to both rotation and linear force were found through neurophysiological techniques, however, the sensory overlap mechanism of SVA neurons is still unclear, which may be closely related to vestibular-related diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address the above-mentioned problem, a cupula buoyancy theory was established in the present study, where SVA neurons were considered semicircular canal afferent (SCCA) neu

Retinoic acid synthesis and autoregulation mediate zonal patterning of vestibular organs and inner ear morphogenesis.

Retinoic acid (RA), a vitamin A (retinol) derivative, has pleiotropic functions during embryonic development. The synthesis of RA requires two enzymatic reactions: oxidation of retinol into retinaldehyde by alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) or retinol dehydrogenases (RDHs); and oxidation of retinaldehyde into RA by aldehyde dehydrogenases family 1, subfamily A (ALDH1as), such as ALDH1a1, ALDH1a2 and ALDH1a3. Levels of RA in tissues are regulated by spatiotemporal expression patterns of genes encoding RA-synthesizing and -degrading enzymes, such as cytochrome P450 26 (Cyp26 genes). Here, we show th

Transformation of vestibular signals for the decisions of hand choice during whole body motion.

In daily life, we frequently reach toward objects while our body is in motion. We have recently shown that body accelerations influence the decision of which hand to use for the reach, possibly by modulating the body-centered computations of the expected reach costs. However, head orientation relative to the body was not manipulated, and hence it remains unclear whether vestibular signals contribute in their head-based sensory frame or in a transformed body-centered reference frame to these cost calculations. To test this, subjects performed a preferential reaching task to targets at various d

The role of subconcussive impacts on sway velocities in Division I men's lacrosse players.

Head impacts resulting in a concussion negatively affect the vestibular system, but little is known about the effect of subconcussive impacts on this system. This study's objective was to determine if subconcussive head impacts sustained over one competitive lacrosse season, effect sway velocity. Healthy Division I male lacrosse players (n = 33; aged 19.52 ± 1.20 years) wore instrumented helmets to track head impact exposures. At the beginning and end of the season the players completed an instrumented Balance Error Scoring System assessment to assess sway velocity. Score differentials were co

Bone-conduction hearing and seismic sensitivity of the Late Permian anomodont Kawingasaurus fossilis.

An investigation of the internal cranial anatomy of the anomodont Kawingasaurus from the Upper Permian Usili Formation in Tanzania by means of neutron tomography revealed an unusual inner and middle ear anatomy such as extraordinarily inflated vestibules, lateroventrally orientated stapes with large footplates, and a small angle between the planes of the anterior and lateral semicircular canals. The vestibule has a volume, which is about 25 times larger than the human vestibule, although Kawingasaurus has only a skull length of approximately 40 mm. Vestibule inflation and enlarged stapes footp

RR interval variability during galvanic vestibular stimulation correlates with arterial pressure upon head-up tilt.

RR interval variability (RRIV) in the supine position without and with galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS (off) and GVS (on), respectively), changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) at the onset of 60° head-up tilt (HUT) during GVS (off), and their relationship were analyzed in 25 healthy young subjects. MAP decreased by less than 5mmHg or increased upon HUT in 12 subjects (UP), but MAP decreased by more than 5mmHg in 13 subjects (DOWN). Applying sinusoidal GVS of 2mA at a random frequency of 0.2 to 10.0Hz did not change the RR intervals or MAP. However, the high frequency component (HF) of R

Vestibular effects of a 7 Tesla MRI examination compared to 1.5 T and 0 T in healthy volunteers.

Ultra-high-field MRI (7 Tesla (T) and above) elicits more temporary side-effects compared to 1.5 T and 3 T, e.g. dizziness or "postural instability" even after exiting the scanner. The current study aims to assess quantitatively vestibular performance before and after exposure to different MRI scenarios at 7 T, 1.5 T and 0 T. Sway path and body axis rotation (Unterberger's stepping test) were quantitatively recorded in a total of 46 volunteers before, 2 minutes after, and 15 minutes after different exposure scenarios: 7 T head MRI (n = 27), 7 T no RF (n = 22), 7 T only B0 (n = 20), 7 T in & ou

Thresholds for human perception of roll tilt motion: patterns of variability based on visual, vestibular, and mixed cues.

HYPOTHESIS: Visual and vestibular cues provide complementary information about spatial orientation. BACKGROUND: A previous study we performed showed that visual and vestibular cues are fused when the brain judges the roll-tilt direction. However, it was unclear if the motion perception threshold measured in visual-vestibular conditions will be better than visual or vestibular thresholds at high frequencies. METHODS: An innovative method of vestibular evaluation, the measurement of vestibular thresholds, was used. We used a Moog mobile platform with dedicated software. Four subjects were test
