Androgen signaling in LMAN regulates song stereotypy in male canaries.

During breeding when testosterone concentrations are high, male songbirds that are open-ended vocal learners like canaries (Serinus canaria) tend to produce a stable, stereotyped song that facilitates mate attraction or territory defense. Outside breeding contexts, song becomes more variable. The neuroendocrine mechanisms controlling this vocal variability across seasons are not entirely clear. We tested whether androgen signaling within the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior nidopallium (LMAN), a cortical-like brain region of the vocal control system known as a vocal variability ge

The postnatal ontogeny of the sexually dimorphic vocal apparatus in goitred gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa).

This study quantitatively documents the progressive development of sexual dimorphism of the vocal organs along the ontogeny of the goitred gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa). The major, male-specific secondary sexual features, of vocal anatomy in goitred gazelle are an enlarged larynx and a marked laryngeal descent. These features appear to have evolved by sexual selection and may serve as a model for similar events in male humans. Sexual dimorphism of larynx size and larynx position in adult goitred gazelles is more pronounced than in humans, whereas the vocal anatomy of neonate goitred gazelles

Sound production in the tiger-tail seahorse Hippocampus comes: Insights into the sound producing mechanisms.

Acoustic signals of the tiger-tail seahorse (Hippocampus comes) during feeding were studied using wavelet transform analysis. The seahorse "click" appears to be a compounded sound, comprising three acoustic components that likely come from two sound producing mechanisms. The click sound begins with a low-frequency precursor signal, followed by a sudden high-frequency spike that decays quickly, and a final, low-frequency sinusoidal component. The first two components can, respectively, be traced to the sliding movement and forceful knock between the supraorbital bone and coronet bone of the cra

Comparison of dynamic and resting endoscopy of the upper portion of the respiratory tract in 57 Thoroughbred yearlings.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: Endoscopic examination of Thoroughbred (TB) yearlings is performed routinely to determine the suitability of horses for racing and to ensure that the conditions of sale are satisfied. However, previous research has demonstrated that resting endoscopic examination can be inaccurate in the diagnosis of functional pathology of the upper portion of the respiratory tract (URT). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the feasibility of performing dynamic overground endoscopy in a group of TB yearlings and to compare the results of resting and dynamic endoscopic examination of

Lovesongs and period gene polymorphisms indicate Lutzomyia cruzi (Mangabeira, 1938) as a sibling species of the Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz and Neiva, 1912) complex.

The sand fly Lutzomyia cruzi (Mangabeira, 1938) is implicated as a vector of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) in some areas of Brazil. Lutzomyia cruzi is closely related to Lutzomyia longipalpis s.l. (Lutz and Neiva, 1912) the main Latin American vector of AVL and a species complex. Although females of the two species are identical, the males can be distinguished by differences in the genitalia. Nevertheless, pheromone analysis shows that Lu. cruzi males produce 9-methyl-germacrene-B, which has also been found in a number of Latin American populations of Lu. longipalpis s.l. In addition,

Bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) songs in the Chukchi Sea between October 2007 and May 2008.

This paper reports on the acoustic detection of bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) songs from the Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort stock, including the first recordings of songs in the fall and early winter. Bowhead whale songs were detected almost continuously in the Chukchi Sea between October 30, 2007 and January 1, 2008 and twice from April 16 to May 5, 2008 during a long-term deployment of five acoustic recorders moored off Point Lay and Wainwright, AK, between October 21, 2007 and August 3, 2008. Two complex and four simple songs were detected. The complex songs consisted of highly stereotyped se

Breathing and calling: neuronal networks in the Xenopus laevis hindbrain.

Xenopus laevis is an aquatic anuran with a complex vocal repertoire. Unlike terrestrial frogs, vocalizations are independent of respiration, and a single muscle group--the laryngeal dilators--produces underwater calls. We sought to identify the premotor neural network that underlies vocal behaviors. Vocal patterns generated by premotor networks control laryngeal motor neurons in cranial nucleus (n.) IX-X. Glottal motor neurons, active during respiration, are also present in n.IX-X. We used horseradish peroxidase (HRP), Lucifer yellow, and fluorescently conjugated dextrans to characterize the o

Ultrasonic call characteristics of rat pups are altered following prenatal malnutrition.

The male offspring of rats provided with a protein deficient diet (6% casein) for 5 weeks prior to mating and throughout pregnancy were subjected to a brief period of isolation and cooling at postnatal Days (P)7, 9, and 11, and their ultrasonic vocalizations were compared with those of well-nourished pups. Calls were categorized into 12 different types based upon their sonographic patterns. Although call rates were equal, the call characteristics of the prenatally malnourished pups differed significantly from those of well-nourished controls. At P7, their mean peak sound frequency (irrespectiv

Primate vocalizations during social separation and aggression: effects of alcohol and benzodiazepines.

The most common group of squirrel monkey vocalizations, peeps, are emitted during different social situations including social separation, affiliative interactions, feeding and aggressive confrontations. The present experiments investigated whether peeps and other vocalizations emitted during different social contexts are pharmacologically altered in a similar manner. First, vocalizations were characterized during (1) social separation in juveniles, and (2) "resident-intruder" aggressive confrontations between dominant monkeys from different social groups. Then, the effects of alcohol (EtOH) a

Projection targets of efferent neurons in the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve in rats: microdissection and glycogen depletion, immunhistochemical nerve fibre analysis, electromyographic study and three dimensional reconstruction.

Tracer studies have revealed that the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve carries sensory but also motor neuron fibres. Our aim was to investigate the potential target(s) of these efferent fibres in vivo and ex vivo using a murine model. The regional anatomy of the rat larynx was explored and detailed using the modified Sihler's procedure. Additonally, the laryngeal muscles were subjected to glycogen depletion via electrostimulation of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve or the inferior laryngeal nerve. Glycogen content was examined histologically via periodic acid-

Sex-dependent Effects of the Drugs of Abuse Amphetamine and the Smart Drug 3,4-Methylenedioxypyrovalerone on Fear Memory Generalization in Rats.

In recent years there has been an increase in the development of new synthetic drugs, among which the "bath salt" 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), a psychostimulant with a mechanism of action similar to those of cocaine and amphetamine, stands out. Drugs of abuse have been consistently shown to affect memory function in male rodents. We have recently shown that amphetamine and MDPV induce generalization of fear memory in an inhibitory avoidance discrimination task in male rats. Although abuse of illicit drugs is more prevalent in men than in women, several studies have demonstrated that

Acute orofacial pain leads to prolonged changes in behavioral and affective pain components.

Acute pain that persists for a few days is associated with a reduction in patients' quality of life. Orofacial persistent pain promotes psychological disorders such as anxiety, impairs daily essential activities such as eating, and results in decreased social interaction. Here, we investigated whether rats subjected to orofacial formalin injection or intraoral incision surgery display persistent facial heat hyperalgesia, ongoing pain, anxiety-like behavior, and changes in ultrasonic vocalization. Orofacial formalin injection or intraoral incision caused facial heat hyperalgesia for 3 days comp

Semi-chronic laminar recordings in the brainstem of behaving marmoset monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Chronic recordings with multi-electrode arrays are widely used to study neural networks underlying complex primate behaviors. Most of these systems are designed for studying neural activity in the cortical hemispheres resulting in a lack of devices being capable of simultaneously recording from ensembles of neurons in deep brainstem structures. However, to fully understand complex behavior, it is fundamental to also decipher the intrinsic mechanisms of the underlying motor pattern generating circuits in the brainstem. NEW METHOD: We report a light-weight system that simultaneously

The Physiologic Impact of Unilateral Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve (RLN) Lesion on Infant Oropharyngeal and Esophageal Performance.

Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury in neonates, a complication of patent ductus arteriosus corrective surgery, leads to aspiration and swallowing complications. Severity of symptoms and prognosis for recovery are variable. We transected the RLN unilaterally in an infant mammalian animal model to characterize the degree and variability of dysphagia in a controlled experimental setting. We tested the hypotheses that (1) both airway protection and esophageal function would be compromised by lesion, (2) given our design, variability between multiple post-lesion trials would be minimal, and (3)

Density can be misleading for low-density species: benefits of passive acoustic monitoring.

Climate-induced changes may be more substantial within the marine environment, where following ecological change is logistically difficult, and typically expensive. As marine animals tend to produce stereotyped, long-range signals, they are ideal for repeatable surveying. In this study we illustrate the potential for calling rates to be used as a tool for determining habitat quality by using an Antarctic pack-ice seal, the leopard seal, as a model. With an understanding of the vocal behavior of a species, their seasonal and diurnal patterns, sex and age-related differences, an underwater passiv

Contribution of the lateral lemniscus to the control of swallowing in decerebrate cats.

Lateral lemniscus, a relay nucleus of auditory sensation, is involved in the control of phonatory movements such as human speech and vocalization of animals. The present study was designed to test whether neurons in the lateral lemniscus contributed to the control of swallowing, one of non-phonic oro-pharyngolaryngeal movements. In acutely decerebrated cats (n=15), swallowing was induced by electrical stimulation (20-80μA at 10Hz for 20s with rectangular pulses of 0.2ms duration) delivered to the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN). Repetitive electrical stimulation (30-50μA at 50Hz for 10-20s) app

Vocal responses of piglets to castration: identifying procedural sources of pain.

The aims of this study were to identify which aspects of castration are painful to piglets, and to determine if less painful methods are available. Previous work has shown that piglets produce more high frequency calls (>1kHz) when castrated than when handled identically but not castrated, or when castrated using a local anesthetic. In Experiment 1, we used 90 piglets to assess the vocal responses to different components of the castration procedure: restraint, washing the ano-genital region, scrotal incision, and pulling/severing of the spermatic cords. Compared to sham-operated animals (which

Effects of picotesla flux electromagnetic fields on dopaminergic transmission in Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome (TS), a chronic familial neuropsychiatric disorder of unknown etiology, is characterized clinically by the presence of motor and vocal tics that wax and wane in severity over the time and by the occurrence of a variety of neurobehavioral disorders. It is believed that the tics of TS result from increased dopamine (DA) activity caused by postsynaptic DA receptor supersensitivity. The synthesis and release of DA is regulated presynaptically by a specific class of DA D2 receptors, termed autoreceptors activation of which causes inhibition of DA synthesis and release. In experi
