Levels, profiles, and emission characteristics of chlorobenzenes in ash samples from some industrial thermal facilities in northern Vietnam.

Chlorobenzenes (CBzs) are unintentionally produced organic contaminants from different thermal industrial processes, which have been scarcely surveyed in Asian developing countries including Vietnam. In this study, residue concentrations, profiles, emission factors, and annual emissions of seven chlorobenzene compounds were investigated in fly ash and bottom ash samples of some industrial facilities including brick making plant, steel and zinc production plants, and industrial and municipal waste incinerators in northern Vietnam. Total concentrations of seven CBzs in the ash samples were gener

Carbon footprint and staff demands of surgery and chemoradiation for muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To calculate the environmental and labour impact of two complete care pathways for patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) with similar oncological outcomes: radical cystectomy (RC) and chemoradiation (CRT), by quantifying the total carbon footprint and staff demands. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The RC was robot-assisted surgery with pelvic lymph node dissection and ileal conduit. CRT included 20 fractions of 2/2.75 Gy with mitomycin C (Day 1) and capecitabine every radiation day. Waste audits identified medical products (n = 284), for which a cradle-to-gate environmental imp

The Financial and Environmental Cost of Anaesthetic Emergency Drugs: Comparing Ampoules With Prefilled Syringes.

Introduction Anaesthetic emergency drugs are essential for safe practice; however, when prepared from ampoules, they are frequently wasted when unused. Prefilled syringes (PFS) may reduce waste as they can be opened at the point of use. Additional benefits may include reducing medication errors and saving clinician time, although higher initial purchasing costs have been a barrier to universal adoption across the NHS. We undertook two quality improvement cycles to quantify the use and waste of anaesthetic emergency drugs before and after transitioning from ampoules to PFS for metaraminol, ephe

Liquid-Phase Syngas-To-Methanol at Low Temperature: Mixed Alcohol Solvent-Controlled Pathways for Circular Carbon Manufacturing.

Methanol is a primary platform chemical for circular manufacturing. Low-temperature liquid-phase methanol synthesis provides an energy-efficient route for valorizing syngas under mild conditions. In this study, we explore the effect of mixed alcohol solvents-specifically 2-butanol and isopropanol-on methanol production over a commercial CuO/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst at 170°C and 5 MPa. These two alcohols were selected based on prior reports of high reactivity, with 2-butanol showing superior performance but at a higher cost. A series of reactions with varying 2-butanol content (0%-100%) revealed a ne

Sufficient Metal-Acid Site Matching in Co-Loaded WOx-ZrO2 Catalysts for Polyethylene Hydrocracking.

Chemical upcycling via catalytic hydrocracking to produce liquid fuels represents a promising strategy for addressing the pressing environmental challenges associated with plastic waste. In this study, we reported a non-noble-metal cobalt catalyst supported on tungstate-zirconia (Co/WOx-ZrO2) for the efficient hydrocracking of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The matching between acid sites and active metal centers, particularly the Brønsted/Lewis (B/L) acid ratio, was systematically tuned by varying the Co loading. Notably, the optimized Co10/WOx-ZrO2 catalyst achieved a complete conversion o

Magnetically Induced Iron-Catalyzed Hydrodeoxygenation of Benzylic Esters and Polyesters.

The selective hydrodeoxygenation of benzylic esters with molecular hydrogen (H2) provides a synthetic approach to methyl-substituted aromatic compounds used widely as intermediates and products in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries in accordance with green chemistry principles. In particular, it can open novel pathways for the use of biomass-derived substrates or waste plastics as chemical feedstocks. We present here an efficient catalytic approach focusing on the use of earth abundant iron in the form of iron carbide nanoparticles (ICNPs) activated by magnetic induction, allowing the

Sn-modified Zr-UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks for dihydroxyacetone conversion into lactic acid.

Dihydroxyacetone is a valuable waste-valorization compound and is a main intermediate in lactic acid production from different recyclable sources. In the present work, Sn incorporation into a Zr-based metal-organic framework is used to increase its acidity and facilitate dihydroxyacetone conversion to lactic acid through the minimization of side reactions. Three series of Sn-modified metal-organic frameworks with different synthetic conditions and Zr/Sn molar ratios are prepared and characterized by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, XRD, XRF, TGA, XPS, and FTIR spectra of the adsorbed CO, a

Oxidative degradation of UV-irradiated polyethylene by laccase-mediator system.

Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most widely used plastics. However, the chemical inertness, inefficient recycling, and random landfilling of PE waste have caused serious pollution to the natural environment. In this study, a series of laccase-mediator systems (LMS) were constructed by combination of two laccases from Botrytis aclada (BaLac) and Bacillus subtilis (BsLac) with three synthetic mediators (ABTS, HBT, and TEMPO) to oxidize LDPE films (UVPE) pretreated with high-temperature UV irradiation. Scanning electron microscopy showed aging phenomena such as etching, fragmentation, and crackin

Coxiella burnetii infection of marine mammals in the Pacific Northwest, 1997-2010.

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. Humans are commonly exposed via inhalation of aerosolized bacteria derived from the waste products of domesticated sheep and goats, and particularly from products generated during parturition. However, many other species can be infected with C. burnetii, and the host range and full zoonotic potential of C. burnetii is unknown. Two cases of C. burnetii infection in marine mammal placenta have been reported, but it is not known if this infection is common in marine mammals. To address this issue, placenta samples were colle…

Phosphorus removal and recovery from wastewater by tobermorite-seeded crystallisation of calcium phosphate.

Investigations were focused on the development of a technology for phosphorus (P) recovery straight from wastewater. Facing the finiteness of the natural resources of this essential nutrient, the declared goal must be the sustainable use of available phosphorus sinks such as wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) for the generation of P rock substitutes. A feasible method for simultaneous elimination and recovery of phosphorus from wastewater proved to be the P-RoC process - the phosphorus recovery from wastewater by induced crystallisation of calcium phosphate, applying tobermorite-rich waste com

Calcium phosphate stabilization of fly ash with chloride extraction.

Municipal solid waste incinerator by products include fly ash and air pollution control residues. In order to transform these incinerator wastes into reusable mineral species, soluble alkali chlorides must be separated and toxic trace elements must be stabilized in insoluble form. We show that alkali chlorides can be extracted efficiently in an aqueous extraction step combining a calcium phosphate gel precipitation. In such a process, sodium and potassium chlorides are obtained free from calcium salts, and the trace metal ions are immobilized in the calcium phosphate matrix. Moderate calcinati

Constitutive, but not challenge-induced, interleukin-10 production is robust in acute pre-pubescent protein and energy deficits: new support for the tolerance hypothesis of malnutrition-associated immune depression based on cytokine production in vivo.

The tolerance model of acute (i.e., wasting) pre-pubescent protein and energy deficits proposes that the immune depression characteristic of these pathologies reflects an intact anti-inflammatory form of immune competence that reduces the risk of autoimmune reactions to catabolically released self antigens. A cornerstone of this proposition is the finding that constitutive (first-tier) interleukin(IL)-10 production is sustained even into the advanced stages of acute malnutrition. The IL-10 response to inflammatory challenge constitutes a second tier of anti-inflammatory regulation and was the

Bioenergy production from yeast through a thermo-chemical platform.

Alternative fuels are urgently needed to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This study was conducted to recover bioenergy from non-edible feedstock, an oleaginous yeast biomass obtained during fed-batch cultivation of Yarrowia lipolytica. Yeast oil (lipids) was extracted from the harvested biomass and readily converted into biodiesel using the non-catalytic transesterification method. The conversion yield of the convertible lipids was 97.4 wt%, even with a high content of unidentified impurities (> 12.7 wt%). To maximize bioenergy production and minimize waste generation, the yeast biomass res

Recovery of phosphorous from industrial waste water by oxidation and precipitation.

This paper describes the development of a method for recovery of phosphorous from one of the waste waters at an Akzo Nobel chemical plant in Ale close to Göteborg. It was found that it is possible to transform the phosphorous in the waste water to a saleable product, i.e. a slowly dissolving fertilizer. The developed process includes oxidation of phosphite to phosphate with hydrogen peroxide and heat. The phosphate is then precipitated as crystalline struvite (ammonium magnesium phosphate) by the addition of magnesium chloride. The environmental impacts of the new method were compared with tho

Detection of porcine circovirus from lesions of a pig with wasting disease in Japan.

A wasting disease characterized by progressive weight loss and dyspnea has been observed in weaning pigs on a farm in Yamagata Prefecture in 1998. Histopathologic findings in an affected pig were bronchointerstitial pneumonia and intracytoplasmic clusters of basophilic inclusions in macrophages of lymph nodes, which were similar to those in pigs with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) recently reported in North America and Europe. Porcine circovirus (PCV)-like particles were observed in bronchial lymph node of the pig by electron microscopy, and PCV antigens were detected in the

The Potential of Spent Coffee Grounds in Functional Food Development.

Coffee is a popular and widely consumed beverage worldwide, with epidemiological studies showing reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, cancers and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, few studies have investigated the health effects of the post-brewing coffee product, spent coffee grounds (SCG), from either hot- or cold-brew coffee. SCG from hot-brew coffee improved metabolic parameters in rats with diet-induced metabolic syndrome and improved gut microbiome in these rats and in humans; further, SCG reduced energy consumption in humans. SCG contains similar bioactive compounds as the

Intensive poultry farming: A review of the impact on the environment and human health.

Poultry farming is one of the most efficient animal husbandry methods and it provides nutritional security to a significant number of the world population. Using modern intensive farming techniques, global production has reached 133.4 mil. t in 2020, with a steady growth each year. Such intensive growth methods however lead to a significant environmental footprint. Waste materials such as poultry litter and manure can pose a serious threat to environmental and human health, and need to be managed properly. Poultry production and waste by-products are linked to NH3, N2O and CH4 emissions, and h

Osteocyte regulation of phosphate homeostasis and bone mineralization underlies the pathophysiology of the heritable disorders of rickets and osteomalacia.

Although recent studies have established that osteocytes function as secretory cells that regulate phosphate metabolism, the biomolecular mechanism(s) underlying these effects remain incompletely defined. However, investigations focusing on the pathogenesis of X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH), autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets (ADHR), and autosomal recessive hypophosphatemic rickets (ARHR), heritable disorders characterized by abnormal renal phosphate wasting and bone mineralization, have clearly implicated FGF23 as a central factor in osteocytes underlying renal phosphate wasting, do

Food-Grade By-Products as Sustainable Sources of Phytochemicals: Green Extraction Strategies, Encapsulation Technologies, and Applications in Functional Food Development.

Food-industry by-products, including fruit and vegetable pomace, peels, and seeds, are increasingly recognized as sustainable sources of bioactive compounds, particularly phenolic compounds and carotenoids, including anthocyanins and lycopene. These phytochemicals exhibit a range of biological activities; however, their application in food systems is often limited by poor stability, low bioavailability, and susceptibility to environmental degradation. This review summarizes recent advances in the recovery and stabilization of bioactive compounds from food-industry by-products. Particular atten
