Decomposition of leg movements during overground walking in individuals with traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Walking requires precise coordination of bilateral lower extremity motions at all joints. This ability can be affected by traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study investigated inter-joint coordination of lower extremities during overground walking after TBI. METHODS: Ten individuals with post-injury ataxia, postural stability and gait abnormalities, as well as 10 sex- and age-matched control subjects were involved in the study. Participants walked at self-selected speed in three experimental conditions: normal walking without any additional task; walking with a narrow base of suppor

Effect of supplementary zinc on orthodontic tooth movement in a rat model.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoclasts and osteoblasts are responsible for regulating bone homeostasis during which the trace element zinc has been shown to exert a cumulative effect on bone mass by stimulating osteoblastic bone formation and inhibiting osteoclastic bone resorption. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of zinc (Zn) on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in a rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 44 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups of 11 animals each and received 0, 1.5, 20 and 50 ppm Zn in distilled water for 60 days. In the last 21 days

Assessing correlations between geological hazards and health outcomes: Addressing complexity in medical geology.

BACKGROUND: The field of medical geology addresses the relationships between exposure to specific geological characteristics and the development of a range of health problems: for example, long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water can result in the development of skin conditions and cancers. While these relationships are well characterised for some examples, in others there is a lack of understanding of the specific geological component(s) triggering disease onset, necessitating further research. OBJECTIVES: This paper aims to highlight several important complexities in geological expos

Echolocation in Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris).

Here we use sound and movement recording tags to study how deep-diving Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) use echolocation to forage in their natural mesopelagic habitat. These whales ensonify thousands of organisms per dive but select only about 25 prey for capture. They negotiate their cluttered environment by radiating sound in a narrow 20° field of view which they sample with 1.5-3 clicks per metre travelled requiring only some 60 clicks to locate, select and approach each prey. Sampling rates do not appear to be defined by the range to individual targets, but rather by t

Pharmacological studies on the sedative-hypnotic effect of Semen Ziziphi spinosae (Suanzaoren) and Radix et Rhizoma Salviae miltiorrhizae (Danshen) extracts and the synergistic effect of their combinations.

Semen Ziziphi spinosae (Suanzaoren in China) and Radix et Rhizoma Salviae miltiorrhizae (Danshen in China) are conventional herbal drugs in traditional Chinese medicine and have been used widely for the treatment of insomnia. In the present study, the sedative-hypnotic activity of the active fractions extracted from Suanzaoren and Danshen were studied using the method of pentobarbital-induced sleep in the mouse model. Qualitative analysis of the standardized extracts was carried out by HPLC-DAD. The results showed that the water extract of Suanzaoren (SWE) (400 and 800 mg/kg body wt.) and the

Axonal transport of cadmium in the olfactory nerve of the pike.

109Cd2+ was applied in the olfactory chambers of pikes (Esox lucius) and the dynamics of the axoplasmic flow of the metal was determined in the olfactory nerves by gamma spectrometry and autoradiography. The results showed that the 109Cd2+ is transported at a constant rate along the olfactory nerves. The profile of the 109Cd2+ in the nerves showed a wave front of transported metal followed by a saddle region. When the nasal chambers were washed 2 hr after application of the 109Cd2+ well-defined transport peaks for the metal were seen in the olfactory axons. The maximal velocity for the transpo

Building resilient urban drainage systems by integrated flood risk index for evidence-based planning.

Urban flooding poses a significant risk to cities worldwide, exacerbated by increasing urbanization and climate change. Effective flood risk management requires comprehensive assessments considering the complex interaction of social, economic, and environmental factors. This study developed an innovative Urban Flood Risk Index (FRI) to quantify and assess flood risk at the sub-catchment level, providing a tool for evidence-based planning and resilient infrastructure development. This study integrates Geographic Information System (GIS), Storm Water Management Model (SWMM), Analytic Hierarchy P

Electrochemical treatment of tannery wastewater using DSA electrodes.

In this work we studied the electrochemical treatment of a tannery wastewater using dimensionally stable anodes (DSA) containing tin, iridium, ruthenium, and titanium. The electrodes were prepared by thermal decomposition of the polymeric precursors. The electrolyses were performed under galvanostatic conditions, at room temperature. Effects of the oxide composition, current density, and effluent conductivity were investigated, and the current efficiency was calculated as a function of the time for the performed electrolyses. Results showed that all the studied electrodes led to a decrease in

Subsurface transport of Cd, Cr, and Mo mediated by biosolid colloids.

The potential of biosolid colloids to transport metals associated with organic-waste amendments through subsurface soil environments was investigated with leaching experiments involving undisturbed soil monoliths. The monoliths (25 cm in height and 18 cm in diameter) were carved from the upper solum of an Alfisol, a Mollisol, and an Entisol in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. Biosolid colloids were fractionated from two municipal wastes (lime-stabilized/LSB, and aerobically-digested/ADB), and a poultry-manure (PMB) organic waste and applied onto the monoliths at a rate of approximately 0.7 cm

Quantification of soil-to-plant transport of recombinant nucleopolyhedrovirus: effects of soil type and moisture, air currents, and precipitation.

Significantly more occlusion bodies (OB) of DuPont viral construct HzSNPV-LqhIT2, expressing a scorpion toxin, were transported by artificial rainfall to cotton plants from sandy soil (70:15:15 sand-silt-clay) than from silt (15:70:15) and significantly more from silt than from clay (15:15:70). The amounts transported by 5 versus 50 mm of precipitation were the same, and transport was zero when there was no precipitation. In treatments that included precipitation, the mean number of viable OB transported to entire, 25- to 35-cm-tall cotton plants ranged from 56 (clay soil, 5 mm of rain) to 226

Evaluation of factors causing lateral migration of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) in onshore oil spill accidents.

Contamination of groundwater by harmful substances poses significant risks to both drinking water sources and aquatic ecosystems, making it a critical environmental concern. Most on-land spill events release organic molecules known as light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs), which then seep into the ground. Due to their low density and organic composition, they tend to float as they reach the water table. LNAPLs encompass a wide range of non-aqueous phase liquids, including various petroleum products, and can, over time, develop carcinogenic chemicals in water. However, due to frequent change

Physical inactivity as an upstream driver of metabolic dysfunction: a perspective.

Obesity and metabolic dysfunction are often discussed as though they are interchangeable, yet contemporary frameworks increasingly distinguish excess adiposity, a heterogeneous risk state, from clinical disease characterized by physiological impairment. At the same time, current evidence on sedentary physiology indicates that low physical activity and prolonged sedentary behavior directly affect insulin sensitivity, glucose handling, vascular function, and metabolic regulation, even before major changes in body mass occur. This perspective argues that physical inactivity deserves greater atten

Acute maternal rehydration increases the urine production rate in the near-term human fetus.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the effect of a decrease of maternal plasma osmolality produced by hypotonic rehydration on the fetal urine production rate in normal near-term human fetuses. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-one healthy pregnant women attending the clinic for antenatal care were studied between 37 and 40 weeks' gestation. The fetal urine production rate was assessed by serial measurements of 3 diameters of the fetal bladder. The hourly fetal urine production rate was determined by linear regression analysis of the calculated bladder volumes versus time and was initially determined aft

Muscle strain histories in swimming milkfish in steady and sprinting gaits.

Adult milkfish (Chanos chanos) swam in a water-tunnel flume over a wide range of speeds. Fish were instrumented with sonomicrometers to measure shortening of red and white myotomal muscle. Muscle strain was also calculated from simultaneous overhead views of the swimming fish. This allowed us to test the hypothesis that the muscle shortens in phase with local body bending. The fish swam at slow speeds [U<2.6 fork lengths s-1 (=FL s-1)] where only peripheral red muscle was powering body movements, and also at higher speeds (2. 6>U>4.6 FL s-1) where they adopted a sprinting gait in which the whi

Lignin reinforced tough, adhesive, and recoverable protein organohydrogels for wearable strain sensing under sub-zero temperatures.

Protein-based hydrogels with promising biocompatibility and biodegradability have attracted considerable interest in areas of epidermal sensing, whereas, which are still difficult to synchronously possess high mechanical strength, self-adhesion, and recoverability. Hence, the bio-polymer lignosulfonate-reinforced gluten organohydrogels (GOHLx) are fabricated through green and simple food-making processes and the following solvent exchange with glycerol/water binary solution. Ascribing to the uniform distribution of lignosulfonate in gluten networks, as well as the noncovalent interactions (e.g

An Octopus-Inspired Stimulus-Responsive Structural Color Hydrogel for Uterus Cervical Canal Stent.

Soft-bodied aquatic organisms have exhibited remarkable capabilities in navigating and moving within liquid environments serving as a profound inspiration for the development of bionic robots with intricate movements. Traditional rigid components are being replaced by stimulus-responsive soft materials such as hydrogels and shape memory polymers, leading to the creation of dynamically responsive soft robots. In this study, the development of a bionic robot inspired by the shape of an octopus and the adsorptive properties of its tentacles, specifically tailored for targeted stimulation and pH s

Assessing learning in mosquito larvae using video-tracking.

Mosquito larvae display a stereotyped escape response when they rest attached to the water surface. It consists in detaching from the surface and diving, to return to the surface after a brief time. It has been shown that this response can be evoked several times, by repeatedly presenting a moving shadow. Diving triggered by a potential danger revealed as a simple bioassay for investigating behavioural responses in mosquito larvae, in particular their ability to learn. In the present work, we describe an automated system, based on video-tracking individuals, and extracting quantitative data of

Carboxymethylcellulose reinforced, double-network hydrogel-based strain sensor with superior sensing stability for long-term monitoring.

Hydrogel-based strain sensors have garnered significant attention for their potential for human health monitoring. However, its practical application has been hindered by water loss, freezing, and structural impairment during long-term motion monitoring. Here, a strain sensor based on double-network (DN) hydrogel of polyacrylamide (PAAm)/carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was developed in a ternary solvent system of lithium chloride (LiCl)/ethylene glycol (EG)/H2O through a facile one-pot radical polymerization strategy. The incorporation of EG effectively mitigated the hydration of lithium salts by
