BACKGROUND: The liver transplant waitlist mortality for infants (age < 1 year) is currently the highest, listed at 20 per 100 years of waiting time. ABO incompatible (ABOi) liver-transplantation is one of the strategies to increase transplantation rate in infants but utilized only in 5.6% of infants.
METHODS: At our center, all children < 1 year are listed for ABOi liver transplants. If the anti-ABO titers are less than 1:8, no plasmapheresis was used. Thymoglobulin is used for induction. We analyzed the transplant outcomes of patients that received ABOi livers compared to ABOc livers.

Objective: To evaluate the mid-term efficacy of ABO incompatible living donor kidney transplantation (ABOi-KT) based on the results of routine renal biopsy for transplantation. Methods: Retrospective collection of clinical data from 23 pairs of ABOi-KT donors and recipients at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from July 2015 to November 2021. ABOi-KT was performed on recipients after desensitization treatment, and the results of routine kidney transplant biopsy at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery were analyzed. Combined with blood type anti

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Haemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) is an immune haemolytic anaemia from maternal alloantibodies. Rh immunoglobulin (RhIg) prophylaxis can prevent alloimmunization to the D antigen. However, RhIg is not universally available in Uganda. ABO incompatibility also causes HDN. We determined the prevalence of HDN among newborn infants with jaundice in Uganda.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study at Kawempe National Referral Hospital, Kampala, Uganda. Infants aged 0-14 days with neonatal jaundice (or total bilirubin >50 μmol/L) were e

ABO incompatibility is not a barrier to allogeneic stem cell transplant but may result in acute hemolytic reactions. As stem cell product manipulation is cumbersome, we are reporting the effectiveness and safety of donor-type red cell infusion as a method of reducing acute hemolytic reaction while using marrow as stem cell source. In major ABO-mismatched bone marrow transplants, manipulation of marrow product requires expertise and expensive equipment, which may not be readily available to transplant centers in low- and middle-income regions. The aim behind our study is to report a safe and ef

OBJECTIVES: To report a successful unintentional transplantation of a deceased donor kidney from an "incompatible" A1B donor into a recipient who was blood group A2B with unsuspected preformed anti-A1 antibodies.
METHODS: The donor and recipient were both typed for ABO antigens. The recipient was tested for ABO and non-ABO antibodies. The recipient was typed for HLA class I and class II antigens, including HLA antibody screen. The T-and B-flow cytometry crossmatch test was performed using standard protocol.
RESULTS: The donor-recipient pair was a complete six-antigen human leukocyte antigen

BACKGROUND: Better understanding of the clinical characteristics of ABO haemolytic disease in neonates helps optimise care.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the morbidity associated with maternal-neonatal ABO incompatibility.
METHODS: Neonates with blood groups A or B born to mothers with blood group O with simultaneous rhesus blood factor compatibility were studied prospectively. Maternal and neonatal details, direct Coomb's test (DCT) on the cord blood, onset and progression of jaundice, and requirement and duration of phototherapy were studied. Neonates requiring phototherapy were considered to have

PURPOSE: This paper aimed to systematically review algorithms to identify transfusion-related ABO incompatibility reactions in administrative data, with a focus on studies that have examined the validity of the algorithms.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Iowa Drug Information Service database, and Embase. A Google Scholar search was also conducted because of the difficulty identifying relevant studies. Reviews were conducted by two investigators to identify studies using data sources from the USA or Canada because these data sources were most likely to reflect the cod

BACKGROUND: ABO-incompatible (ABOi) living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in adult patients has been controversial because of the high risk of antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) mediated by preformed anti-ABO antibodies. However, outcomes have recently improved owing to various treatment advances.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review article describes the history and current progress in ABOi liver transplantation, mainly from the viewpoint of the Japanese experience.
RESULTS: The typical clinical manifestations of AMR are hepatic necrosis and intrahepatic biliary complication. The outcomes

BACKGROUND: Paired living kidney donation became possible in the United Kingdom in 2006 after the introduction of a new legal framework for organ donation. A national matching scheme was subsequently established and we report the early United Kingdom experience of paired donation.
METHODS: A new national matching algorithm was developed for the introduction of paired donation in the United Kingdom. Initially, all potential two-way exchanges were identified with prioritization according to a points system based on geographical proximity between pairs, calculated human leukocyte antigen antibod

The frequency of the development of rejection crises in the early postoperative period in 32 recipients of allogeneic kidneys from alive related donors was analysed depending on the histocompatibility according to the antigens of the HLA-AB system and the nature of the immunosuppressant therapy. The results of the analysis showed that the frequency of rejection crises was 100% when the donor and recipient were compatible in 1-2 antigens, and 40% in compatibility according to 3-4 antigens. The incidence of rejection crises was 71.4% among patients who received the standard immunosuppressant the

We reviewed 1500 acute transfusion reactions that were reported to the Auckland Regional Blood centre over a 7 year period, from approximately 440,000 transfusions. The majority of reactions were to red cells, and these had the highest reaction incidence per unit (0.73%) of all blood products. The reaction incidence per unit transfused for plasma was 0.1%, for stable plasma protein solution 0.01%, and for platelets 0.04%. The majority of symptoms reported were mild and transient. The commonest were fever (72%), rigors (33%), and rash or urticaria (30%). Although more serious reactions were rep

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-related alpha-gal syndrome (TRAGS) has recently been proposed as a cause of allergic transfusion reactions (ATRs) in which alpha-gal-specific IgE in sensitized group O (or potentially group A) recipients reacts with epitopes on group B or AB plasma-containing components. Fewer than 10 cases have been reported, all from the Northeast and mid-Atlantic United States, and alpha-gal-specific ATR evaluation practices are unstudied.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Two patients with ATRs consistent with TRAGS at a large academic medical center in Nashville, Tennessee are reported al

BACKGROUND: Several studies have investigated the relationships between female reproductive diseases and ABO blood groups. However, evidence regarding the potential association between ABO blood groups and adenomyosis remains limited. The aim of the study, thus, was to investigate the association between ABO blood groups and the risk of developing adenomyosis in Nepalese women.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, from 2016 to 2017. Statistical analysis was done using Statistical Pac

BACKGROUND: It has been known that ABO blood groups are linked to the phenotypes of certain diseases; however, and the relationship between ABO blood groups and postoperative pain have not been extensively studied, especially in children. This study was to investigate whether there would be an association between the four major ABO blood groups and postoperative pain, as indicated by the differences in pain scores and rescue fentanyl requirements among blood groups in children after adenotonsillectomy.
METHODS: A total of 124 children, aged 3-7 years, ASA I or II, and undergoing elective aden

We present a case of pediatric ALF, secondary to hepatic HL, who underwent a successful ABOi living donor liver transplant. We believe this is the first such case reported in academic literature. HL with liver involvement is extremely rare and is not considered an indication for transplantation. The 12-year-old, male patient presented with a viral illness prodrome, and parvovirus was detected in pre-transplant laboratory cultures. He received an ABOi living donor liver graft followed by a course of plasma exchange and rituximab after which standard immunosuppression was used. The HL was diagno

Change in ABO antigen expression on the surface of neoplastic cells have been seen for a variety of tumor types. This phenomenon has been linked with myeloid neoplasms as well but is reported infrequently. Here, we report a rare cause of ABO discrepancy in an elderly female having chronic myeloid leukemia.

Type A subgroup is rare in Japan, and kidney transplant to a type A subgroup recipient is rare worldwide. A 65-year-old man presented for living-donor kidney transplant. Blood group testing showed that his wife (kidney donor) had blood group type A. The patient (recipient) had a type A subgroup because reverse blood grouping showed a weak reaction with A1 antigen. Further testing showed that the recipient had type A subgroup between Ax and Ael because adsorption elution experiments and flow cytometry showed a few A antigens that were not detected on forward grouping, and DNA analysis was not c

OBJECTIVE: In the era of early discharge of newborns from the hospital, newborns with ABO incompatibility are at especially greater risk for developing a subsequent significant hyperbilirubinemia because some of these infants also may present with some degree of ABO isoimmune disease. In this study, we aimed to determine prospectively the critical serum total bilirubin level to predict significant hyperbilirubinemia and severe hemolytic disease in healthy term newborns with ABO incompatibility based on a serum bilirubin measurement made at a postnatal age at which all newborns are at the hospi
