Cadences of the collective: conspecific stimulation patterns interact with endogenous rhythms to cue socially mediated response shifts.

Many animals form behavioral collectives, and optimal interaction strategies often differ across social contexts. Sensory scenes generated by many interacting conspecifics are complex. Thus, maintaining socially calibrated responses requires individuals to distill key features from conspecific scenes to guide continued adjustments to social fluctuations. Túngara frogs produce mating calls in choruses varying in size, and interaction patterns differ across social environments; rivals alternate their calls in smaller choruses, but increasingly overlap one another's calls in a stereotyped fashion

Transcranial ultrasound stimulation of motor networks in Parkinson's disease informed by local field potential dynamics.

Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is a promising noninvasive technique for modulating deep brain targets and circuits with high spatial precision. For its successful clinical translation, confirmation of target engagement, together with a deeper understanding of the effects of TUS, is essential. To advance these goals, we obtained direct measures of neural activity using electrodes implanted in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) during TUS of deep and superficial targets, guided by magnetic resonance imaging-based acoustic modeling and real-time neu

Modulation of Auditory Cortex Activity in Salicylate-Induced Tinnitus Rats via Deep Brain Stimulation of the Inferior Colliculus.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus, a self-reported perceptual disorder, is currently believed to arise from maladaptive plasticity due to reduced sensory input. While deep brain stimulation (DBS) has shown promise in alleviating tinnitus-related behaviors, its effects on neuronal activity remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the spontaneous firing rates (SFRs) of the primary auditory cortex (A1) before and after DBS of the external cortex of the inferior colliculus (ECIC) in a rat model of tinnitus. METHODS: Tinnitus was induced in rats through sodium salicylate injections for 14 consecutive days,

Deep brain stimulation improves movement amplitude but not hastening of repetitive finger movements.

External pacing cues, dopaminergic medication, and bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) improve repetitive movements performed at low rates. When the pacing rate is increased to frequencies near 2 Hz and above, both external pacing cues and Parkinson's medication were shown to be ineffective at improving repetitive finger movement performance. It remains unclear if STN-DBS improves the performance of repetitive finger movements at high pacing rates. This study examined the effects of STN-DBS on the amplitude and rate of repetitive finger movement across a range of ext

Multisensory Attenuation of the Pupil Light Response in Autistic and Non-Autistic Children.

Autonomic responses to sensory stimuli are altered in autism, yet little is known about how multisensory input modulates these responses. This study examined whether auditory stimuli affect the pupil light reflex (PLR), a parasympathetically driven response to light, in autistic and non-autistic children. Pupillometry was used to measure responses to visual-only (V), auditory-only (A), and audiovisual (AV) stimuli in 72 children aged 8-14 years (34 non-autistic, 38 autistic). We hypothesized that auditory input would attenuate pupil constriction in non-autistic children in the AV condition and

Sensory maps in the telencephalic pallium of goldfish.

The functional organization of the teleost telencephalic pallium remains poorly understood, particularly regarding the presence of modality-specific sensory domains and their topographic arrangement. Here, we used in vivo wide-field voltage-sensitive dye imaging to map sensory-evoked neural activity across the dorsal surface of the telencephalic pallium of adult goldfish. Somatosensory, auditory, gustatory, and visual stimulation revealed distinct, modality-specific domains located within the dorsomedial (Dm) and dorsolateral (Dl) pallium, that closely matched cytoarchitectural boundaries. The neural basis of species-specific defensive behaviour in Peromyscus mice.

Evading imminent threat from predators is critical for animal survival. Effective defensive strategies can vary, even between closely related species. However, the neural basis of such species-specific behaviours remains poorly understood1-4. Here we find that two sister species of deer mice (genus Peromyscus)5 show different responses to the same looming stimulus: Peromyscus maniculatus, which occupies densely vegetated habitats, predominantly escapes, whereas the open field specialist, Peromyscus polionotus, briefly freezes. This difference arises from species-specific escape thresholds, is

The neural representations underlying asymmetric cross-modal prediction of words.

Cross-modal prediction serves a crucial adaptive role in the multisensory world, yet the neural mechanisms underlying this prediction are poorly understood. The present study addressed this important question by combining a novel audiovisual sequence memory task, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and multivariate neural representational analyses. Our behavioral results revealed a reliable asymmetric cross-modal predictive effect, with a stronger prediction from visual to auditory (VA) modality than auditory to visual (AV) modality. Mirroring the behavioral pattern, we found the sup

Effects of auditory and visual stimuli on glucose metabolism in Holstein dairy cattle.

BACKGROUND: Standardization of the intravenous glucose tolerance test (ivGTT) in cattle has received little attention despite its widespread use to monitor glucose metabolism. The impact of management practices including several sensorial stimuli on test responses has not yet been described in young cattle. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of noise exposure, and visual food stimuli in combination with physical restraint on ivGTT and insulin traits in Holstein cattle. A total of 108 ivGTT (6 tests per animal) were performed in bulls (n = 6), steers (n = 6), and heifers (n

Memory for non-painful auditory items is influenced by whether they are experienced in a context involving painful electrical stimulation.

In this study, we sought to examine the effect of experimentally induced somatic pain on memory. Subjects heard a series of words and made categorization decisions in two different conditions. One condition included painful shocks administered just after presentation of some of the words; the other condition involved no shocks. For the condition that included painful stimulations, every other word was followed by a shock, and subjects were informed to expect this pattern. Word lists were repeated three times within each condition in randomized order, with different category judgments but consi

The impact of multisensory instruction on learning letter names and sounds, word reading, and spelling.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the use of simultaneous multisensory structured language instruction promoted better letter name and sound production, word reading, and word spelling for second grade children with typical development (N = 6) or with dyslexia (N = 5) than structured language instruction alone. The use of non-English graphemes (letters) to represent two pretend languages was used to control for children's lexical knowledge. A multiple baseline, multiple probe across subjects single-case design, with an embedded alternating treatments design, was used to comp

The impact of sound in modern multiline video slot machine play.

Slot machine wins and losses have distinctive, measurable, physiological effects on players. The contributing factors to these effects remain under-explored. We believe that sound is one of these key contributing factors. Sound plays an important role in reinforcement, and thus on arousal level and stress response of players. It is the use of sound for positive reinforcement in particular that we believe influences the player. In the current study, we investigate the role that sound plays in psychophysical responses to slot machine play. A total of 96 gamblers played a slot machine simulator w

Methodology for studying the transient effects of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with auditory residual inhibition on tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and auditory residual inhibition (RI) are short lasting non-invasive techniques that can suppress tinnitus in some people. A pilot study was undertaken to evaluate methods to measure a potential additive effect of these treatments. NEW METHOD: Ten participants (mean age 59 years) with chronic tinnitus underwent four sessions of anodal tDCS of the left temporoparietal area(LTA) combined with 1min of auditory stimulation (broadband noise presented at tinnitus minimum masking level [MML]+10 dB), either before, during or immediately after

Suppression of visually induced vertigo: effects of attentional position and modality.

INTRODUCTION: Visually induced vertigo (VIV) is a serious problem because humans rely on vision more than any other sensory system to receive information from their surrounding environment. We investigated whether attention to simultaneous visual or auditory tasks would reduce VIV. METHODS: Subjects were four women and one man who were highly susceptible to VIV and four women who had low susceptibility to VIV. An animation display was prepared to test the effect of overlapping visual task stimuli when the position of the stimuli on the screen was changed. The effect of modality was tested by

Craniocentric body-sway responses to 500 Hz bone-conducted tones in man.

Whole-body responses evoked by bone-conducted sound, a stimulus known to activate vestibular afferents, were recorded in standing subjects deprived of vision. With the head facing forward, unilateral mastoid vibration (500 Hz, 2 s, 136 dB force level) produced an oblique body sway with a consistent lateral component away from the stimulated ear and an average forward component. The side of stimulation had a powerful influence on the direction but not the magnitude of sway. Individuals' mean response directions were significantly clustered between subjects, as well as within subjects for 12 of

Modulation of cochlear afferent response by the lateral olivocochlear system: activation via electrical stimulation of the inferior colliculus.

The olivocochlear (OC) efferent innervation of the mammalian inner ear consists of two subdivisions, medial (MOC) and lateral (LOC), with different peripheral terminations on outer hair cells and cochlear afferent terminals, respectively. The cochlear effects of electrically activating MOC efferents are well known, i.e., response suppression effected by reducing outer hair cells' contribution to cochlear amplification. LOC peripheral effects are unknown, because their unmyelinated axons are difficult to electrically stimulate. Here, stimulating electrodes are placed in the inferior colliculus

Auditory and visual sustained attention in adolescents prenatally exposed to alcohol.

BACKGROUND: Sustained attention problems and impulsivity are reported in association with prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol syndrome, but research in this area is limited and contradictory. METHODS: Auditory and visual sustained attention were investigated in 265 low-income, predominantly African-American, adolescents (mean age, 15.12 years; SD, 0.92). Included were 53 unexposed controls and 128 exposed to alcohol and other drugs prenatally, with 46 of these exhibiting dysmorphic features and growth retardation, as well as a special-education contrast group (n = 84). Sustained atten

Effects of stapedius-muscle contractions on the masking of auditory-nerve responses.

There has been little exploration of the mechanisms by which stapedius muscle contractions reduce the masking of responses to high-frequency sounds by low-frequency sounds. To fill this gap in knowledge, controlled stapedius contractions were elicited with direct shocks in anesthetized cats, and measurements were made of the effects of these contractions on the masking of single auditory-nerve fibers and on the attenuation of middle-ear transmission. The results show that the stapedius-induced reductions of masking can be much larger than the attenuations of low-frequency sound. With a 300-Hz
