Tooth wear and the "design" of the human dentition: a perspective from evolutionary medicine.

Worn, flat occlusal surfaces and anterior edge-to-edge occlusion are ubiquitous among the dentitions of prehistoric humans. The concept of attritional occlusion was proposed in the 1950s as a hypothesis to explain these characteristics. The main aspects of this hypothesis are: 1) the dentitions of ancient populations in heavy-wear environments were continuously and dynamically changing owing to life-long attritional tooth reduction and compensatory tooth migration, 2) all contemporary humans inherit these compensatory mechanisms, and recent reduction in wear severity has resulted in failure to

The exodermis: a variable apoplastic barrier.

The exodermis (hypodermis with Casparian bands) of plant roots represents a barrier of variable resistance to the radial flow of both water and solutes and may contribute substantially to the overall resistance. The variability is a result largely of changes in structure and anatomy of developing roots. The extent and rate at which apoplastic exodermal barriers (Casparian bands and suberin lamellae) are laid down in radial transverse and tangential walls depends on the response to conditions in a given habitat such as drought, anoxia, salinity, heavy metal or nutrient stresses. As Casparian ba

Structural plasticity of the cardiac nuclear pore complex in response to regulators of nuclear import.

Communication between the cytoplasm and nucleoplasm of cardiac cells occurs by molecular transport through nuclear pores. In lower eukaryotes, nuclear transport requires the maintenance of cellular energetics and ion homeostasis. Although heart muscle is particularly sensitive to metabolic stress, the regulation of nuclear transport through nuclear pores in cardiomyocytes has not yet been characterized. With the use of laser confocal and atomic force microscopy, we observed nuclear transport in cardiomyocytes and the structure of individual nuclear pores under different cellular conditions. In

[Duodenal ulcer: clinical significance of adaptation defects in the system of neurohumoral regulation].

Radioimmunoassay was used to determine prostaglandin (PGE-2) and cyclic nucleotides (cAMP and cGMP) concentrations in the serum before, 1 and 2 hours after standard test breakfast (5066 kJ) in 65 patients with duodenal ulcer. Basal hyperproduction of prostaglandins and cyclic nucleotides were interpreted as an adaptation-compensatory mechanism. The unbalance of their aftermeal reactions persistent even in ulcer healing may belong to factors of the disease progression.

Adaptation of electrolytes and fluid transport in rat small and large intestine after distal small bowel resection.

Na+, Cl- and water transport were studied in jejunum, caecum and colon after either 50% or 80% of small bowel resection (SBR). Four weeks after surgery, dry and wet weights, net absorption in vivo of sodium, chloride and water were determined. There was a significant intestinal growth after 50% or 80% SBR except for the colon which only showed increased tissue mass after 80% SBR. Net transport was stimulated both, per organ and per unit mass. In the small intestine and caecum both organ growth and changes in cell function appear to be involved in the adaptive response, regardless the extent of

The orthophorization of heterophoria.

The distribution of heterophoria within the general population is significantly non-normal and a high incidence of approximate orthophoria is observed. This observation has been named the orthophorization of heterophoria. It has been suggested that prism adaptation is the mechanism underlying orthophorization. A prolonged occlusion experiment has been used to investigate this possibility and further supports this theory.

Molecular characterization of enterovirus 71 sibling strains for thermal adaption in Vero cells with adaptive laboratory evolution.

Enterovirus 71 is the main pathogen that causes severe and fatal hand-foot-mouth-disease (HFMD) cases. As the enterovirus virus mutation has implications for pathogenesis, vaccine development, antiviral therapy, and epidemiological disease management of the virus. In this study, we investigated the variations of enterovirus 71 in thermal adaption, using the method of adaptive laboratory evolution. The sibling virus strains were isolated from a 2-year-old severe case of HFMD (#100) and her symptomless close contact (#101). Both strains were cultured in Vero cells by serial passage of 36 generat

Increasing Type 1 Poliovirus Capsid Stability by Thermal Selection.

UNLABELLED: Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease caused by poliovirus (PV). It can result in paralysis and may be fatal. Integrated global immunization programs using live-attenuated oral (OPV) and/or inactivated (IPV) PV vaccines have systematically reduced its spread and paved the way for eradication. Immunization will continue posteradication to ensure against reintroduction of the disease, but there are biosafety concerns for both OPV and IPV. They could be addressed by the production and use of virus-free virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines that mimic the "empty" capsids (ECs) norm

The influence of weight and starting height on lifting mechanics in lower extremity amputees.

This study compares the lifting mechanics of lower extremity amputees to controls and describes the influence of weight lifted and starting height on lifting style. Subjects included three individuals with transtibial amputation (TTA), two individuals with transfemoral amputation (TFA), and three able-bodied controls (CO). Amputee subjects performed six repetitions of six weights, randomly ordered, from two starting heights. TTA lifted from 30 cm and knee height, TFA from knee and thigh height, and controls from all three heights. Data were obtained from a work simulator, force plate, and a mo

A narrative review of adaptive Phase I/II clinical trial designs for drug combinations in oncology.

BACKGROUND: Adaptive Phase I/II designs can jointly use toxicity and efficacy information to guide dose allocation and regimen selection. These designs are particularly relevant for oncology drug-combination trials, where the optimal regimen may not coincide with the maximum tolerated dose. METHODS: We conducted a structured narrative review of adaptive Phase I/II designs for oncology drug combinations that use both toxicity and efficacy information for adaptive allocation or final regimen selection. PubMed was searched through April 16, 2026 using terms related to Phase I/II, seamless design

Initial experience with MR-guided adaptive spinal stereotactic radiotherapy: a new indication for the MR-linac.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is associated with good local control and symptom relief in the management of spinal metastases. Delivery of ablative doses and re-irradiation is challenged by spinal cord toxicity. We hypothesized that lower spinal cord doses as well as better target coverage could be yielded with stereotactic magnetic resonance-guided adaptive radiotherapy (SMART). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional records were reviewed to retrieve patients who received online MR-guided SBRT for spinal metastases. Each fraction was reviewed to determine the ne

Gradient-Guided Graph Contrastive Learning for Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomics Clustering.

Single-cell proteomic data generated by mass spectrometry-based technologies provide direct insights into cellular functional states and have become increasingly important for revealing cellular heterogeneity in complex biological systems. Accurate clustering of such data is essential for identifying functionally distinct cell subpopulations and understanding biological processes such as immune responses, tumor heterogeneity, and cell fate regulation. However, mass spectrometry-based single-cell proteomic data are often characterized by high dimensionality, measurement noise, technical bias, a

Approaches to Formaldehyde Measurement: From Liquid Biological Samples to Cells and Organisms.

Formaldehyde (FA) is the simplest aldehyde present both in the environment and in living organisms. FA is an extremely reactive compound capable of protein crosslinking and DNA damage. For a long time, FA was considered a "biochemical waste" and a by-product of normal cellular metabolism, but in recent decades the picture has changed. As a result, the need arose for novel instruments and approaches to monitor and measure not only environmental FA in water, cosmetics, and household products, but also in food, beverages and biological samples including cells and even organisms. Despite numerous

Hydrogel-based reprogramming of the tumor inflammatory microenvironment: from mechanotransduction and dynamic materials to adaptive immunotherapy.

Modulating inflammation within the tumor microenvironment (TME) has emerged as a crucial avenue in contemporary cancer therapy. However, the intricate signaling networks, mechanical heterogeneity, spatiotemporal drug gradients, and poor immune cell infiltration continue to hinder the effectiveness of conventional therapeutic strategies. Hydrogels, with tunable physicochemical properties and versatile biological functions, offer a promising platform for addressing these challenges. This review first unpacks the inflammatory pathways active in the TME and then provides a structured overview of h

Biological responses of low-dose ionizing radiation from Oral and Maxillofacial spiral CT on human peripheral blood B lymphocytes.

BACKGROUND: X-ray examinations are widely used in oral and maxillofacial practice, but the biological effects of diagnostic low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) remain incompletely understood. Growing evidence indicates that even low doses can induce molecular and cellular alterations, highlighting the need to clarify LDIR-induced biological responses in dental imaging. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of LDIR generated by oral and maxillofacial spiral CT on cell viability, cell cycle distribution, and apoptosis in human peripheral blood B lymphocytes. METHODS: Human peripheral blood B ly

Promoting active learning and student engagement through critical analysis of scientific illustrations.

Figures and illustrations are central tools for communicating complex biological concepts, yet they necessarily simplify structures and processes, which can obscure important details or introduce misconceptions. This article describes a low-preparation, flexible instructional strategy that leverages these simplifications to promote active learning and student engagement through the critical analysis of scientific illustrations. Instructors prompt students to examine existing figures from textbooks, lectures, or primary literature and identify what is missing, oversimplified, or potentially mis

Pathogenesis-oriented therapy of psoriasis using biologics.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is currently regarded an immune-mediated inflammatory disease. The central pathogenic axis comprises interleukin-23, TH17-lymphocytes differentiating under its influence, and interleukin-17A as a key effector cytokine of these T-lymphocytes. All of these can selectively be targeted using biological therapies, thus potentially increasing efficacy and reducing adverse events when compared to conventional systemic therapeutics. AREAS COVERED: We review the current concept of psoriasis as an immune-mediated inflammatory disease, assessing the evidence for a role of element

In vitro cultured cells as probes for space radiation effects on biological systems.

Near future scenarios of long-term and far-reaching manned space missions, require more extensive knowledge of all possible biological consequences of space radiation, particularly in humans, on both a long-term and a short-term basis. In vitro cultured cells have significantly contributed to the tremendous advancement of biomedical research. It is therefore to be expected that simple biological systems such as cultured cells, will contribute to space biomedical sciences. Space represents a novel environment, to which life has not been previously exposed. Both microgravity and space radiation

Modeling the dynamics of hepatic metabolism: the predominance of 12-hour rhythmicity in metabolic adaptation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The liver continuously adjusts its metabolic activity to synchronize the nutrient supply with the body's demands. This synchronization involves the complex coordination of acute metabolic needs, nutrient availability, and activity levels, which is orchestrated according to cyclic internal rhythms governed by the circadian clock. This study aimed to decipher the role of circadian rhythms in liver metabolic functions, including mitochondrial activities that are critical for energy production and metabolic adaptation. METHODS: We investigated rhythmic changes in liver

A Tn-seq Screen of Streptococcus pneumoniae Uncovers DNA Repair as the Major Pathway for Desiccation Tolerance and Transmission.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an opportunistic pathogen that is a common cause of serious invasive diseases such as pneumonia, bacteremia, meningitis, and otitis media. Transmission of this bacterium has classically been thought to occur through inhalation of respiratory droplets and direct contact with nasal secretions. However, the demonstration that S. pneumoniae is desiccation tolerant and, therefore, environmentally stable for extended periods of time opens up the possibility that this pathogen is also transmitted via contaminated surfaces (fomites). To better understand the molecular mecha
