Acceptability of an adolescent lifestyle mHealth app: a qualitative study using focus groups and interviews.

BACKGROUND: Although many studies have evaluated behavioral mobile health (mHealth) usability in adults, far fewer have examined acceptability among adolescents, particularly regarding sustained engagement for lifestyle and behavior change. Adolescents have distinct developmental needs and design preferences, yet most mHealth tools are adapted from adult models, contributing to low adoption and limited continued use. In adolescent mHealth, understanding acceptability among adolescents, caregivers, and clinicians is essential to ensure interventions are developmentally appropriate and feasible

Sex differences in factors associated with childhood- and adolescent-onset wheeze.

RATIONALE: Factors predicting the development of wheeze may differ between sexes and between childhood and adolescence. METHODS: A New Zealand birth cohort of 1,037 children was followed to age 26. For this analysis, those reporting recurrent wheezing at two or more assessments were classified as "wheezers." We examined risk factors for development of wheeze before age 10 (childhood) and subsequently (adolescent-onset) for males and for females separately using Cox regression modeling. RESULTS: Males more often developed childhood wheeze (p = 0.002) and females adolescent-onset wheeze (p < 0

Indirect Effects of Early Parenting on Adult Antisocial Outcomes via Adolescent Conduct Disorder Symptoms and Callous-Unemotional Traits.

Parental harsh punishment and warmth have been associated with child and adolescent conduct disorder (CD) symptoms and callous-unemotional (CU) traits (i.e., lack of guilt, empathy, and deficient affect); however, it is unclear whether the effect of these parenting behaviors on antisocial outcomes persists into adulthood. Thus, the present study aimed to test whether adolescent CD symptoms and CU traits mediate the effect of parental harsh punishment and warmth on adult antisocial outcomes (i.e., antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), externalizing psychopathology, partner violence, and viole

Parental Understanding of Menstrual Problems in Their Adolescent Child: A Narrative Review✰.

Menstrual health is a critical aspect of adolescent development, which encompasses physical, psychological, and social dimensions. While menstruation is a natural physiological process, problems such as dysmenorrhea and heavy menstrual bleeding can negatively affect the quality of life of an adolescent. Early education and timely recognition of menstrual problems are thus important. However, adolescent menstrual health needs remain unaddressed across diverse culture contexts and are underrecognized in low-income countries. Parents, particularly mothers, are often the primary source of informat…

Association between adolescent alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking with adult risk of breast cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol and smoking are established carcinogens; however, evidence on adolescent exposure during mammary development on breast cancer risk remains inconsistent. This study assessed the associations between adolescent alcohol intake, smoking, and adult breast cancer risk. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE (1966), Web of Science (1900), and Scopus (1970) from inception to September 2025 identified 31 eligible studies (eleven on alcohol, twenty on smoking). Pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using random-effects models. RESULTS

Experiencing Novelty in Adolescence and the Influence of Prior Novelty-Related Experiences on Adult Behavioral Outcomes in Wistar Han Rats.

Acquiring new experiences, especially in adolescence, shapes behavioral responses to life's challenges. The absence of novelty-related experiences in laboratory rats raises concerns about their behavioral development and the reproducibility of research. This study examined changes in behavioral responses to novelty from early and late adolescence to adulthood, as well as the long-term effects of prior novelty exposure. To assess maturational differences, seven early adolescent, nine late adolescent, and seven adult male Wistar Han rats were tested once in a behavioral battery consisting of the

Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma and Hyperparathyroidism in an Adolescent Male: A Case Report and Review of Hyperparathyroidism-associated Sarcomas.

The association between hyperparathyroidism and sarcoma is extremely rare with other reported cases describing the development of osteosarcoma and chondrosarcomas in middle-aged adults. This case describes an adolescent male with hyperparathyroidism and a pathologic fracture of a biopsy-proven brown tumor in the distal right femur. The fracture healed but later developed an undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the bone at the site of the known brown tumor. Although in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the risks of elevated parathyroid hormone with development of sarcomas, there is

Sexual experiences of clinically referred adolescents with features of gender dysphoria.

Gender dysphoria in adolescence could be expected to be associated with delayed sexual development because of the distress related to the sexual characteristics of the body. However, identity challenges may also increase early and risk-taking sexual behaviours among adolescents with gender dysphoria. We studied sexual experiences among 101 adolescents, attending an adolescent gender identity service, desiring gender reassignment. Their experiences were compared to the sexual experiences of the same-aged population, evaluated in a large adolescent survey. A majority of adolescents with gender d

Unique Considerations for Forensic Interviews With Adolescents: An Exploration of Expert Interviewers' Perspectives.

Although adolescents are at elevated risk of sexual victimisation, very limited research has focused on how best to interview suspected adolescent victims. The current study was conducted to lay the groundwork for the development of best-practice interviewing approaches with adolescents when sexual victimisation is suspected. Expert interviewers with experience and knowledge in interviewing suspected adolescent victims were asked about common challenges they encounter with adolescent interviewees and how they tailor their interviews for this population. The findings indicated that adolescents

Intimate partner violence against adolescent girls: regional and national prevalence estimates and associated country-level factors.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence is a serious public health problem and negatively affects short-term and long-term health, development, and wellbeing of adolescent girls. Global estimates from WHO have shown that adolescent girls aged 15-19 years experience high rates of intimate partner violence. We aimed to estimate the lifetime and past-year prevalence and patterns of physical or sexual intimate partner violence against adolescent girls by male partners across 161 countries and areas, and to examine the country-level factors, including the prevalence of child marriage, associated with

Building a research agenda for mental health assessments in resolving legal dilemmas on adolescent sexual consent.

The dilemma of adolescent consent confounds dispensation of justice in child sexual abuse and juvenile justice contexts, with legal personnel struggling to discern between consent and coercion in cases of adolescents who are sexually abused and those who are accused of alleged sexual offences. Given that capacities for consent also determine personal safety and mental health, there is an imperative to build a child mental health research agenda for developing methodologies that incorporate psychological knowledge on abuse dynamics, adolescent mental health and development, vulnerability and ri

Longitudinal links from attachment with mothers and fathers to adolescent substance use: Internalizing and externalizing pathways.

The present study examined whether internalizing and externalizing symptoms may mediate the association between adolescent-mother and adolescent-father attachment and substance use. The sample included 167 adolescents (47% girls) who were assessed at five time points with approximately 1 year between each assessment, beginning in middle adolescence (Mage = 14.07) and ending in the transition to young adulthood (Mage = 18.39). The adolescents reported their perceived attachment with both their mother and father during middle adolescence (Times 1 and 2), their internalizing and externalizing sym

Moderated mediation of the link between parent-adolescent conflict and adolescent risk-taking: The role of physiological regulation and hostile behavior in an experimentally controlled investigation.

Compared to childhood and adulthood, adolescence is a time of greater risk-taking behavior, potentially resulting in serious consequences. Theories of adolescent brain development highlight the imbalance between neural circuitry for reward vs. regulation. Although this imbalance may make adolescents more vulnerable to impaired decision-making in the context of heightened arousal, not all adolescents exhibit problematic risk behavior, suggesting other factors are involved. Relatedly, parent-adolescent conflict increases in mid-adolescence, and is linked to negative outcomes like substance use r

Do Children Who Develop Faster Go on to Age Faster in Midlife?

We quantified the association between rate of child development and pace of midlife aging in the Dunedin Study and the Add Health Study. Physical development was quantified in Dunedin participants (N = 1,037; age 45) using a composite comprised of (1) birth weight for gestational age, (2) toddler weight gain, (3) timing of behavioral milestones, (4) adiposity-rebound age, (5) timing of adolescent growth spurt, and (6) tempo of adolescent growth spurt. Social development was quantified using the Vineland Social Maturity Scale. Multi-organ-system (cardiovascular, metabolic, renal, immune, dental

"We can make an impact": A mixed method examination of Asian American parents' and adolescents' bidirectional racial-civic socialization.

Little is known about Asian American family processes that support adolescents' civic engagement, especially in the context of anti-Asian racism. This convergent mixed-method explanatory study examined bidirectional racial-civic socialization (RCS) between Asian American parent-adolescent dyads around racial discrimination and how RCS relates to adolescents' civic engagement. Using observations of 78 Asian American parent-adolescent dyads discussing anti-Asian hate, exploratory qualitative analyses identified how critical consciousness is intertwined in bidirectional RCS. In surveys with 449 d

Highly replicable multisite patterns of adolescent white matter maturation.

The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study is the largest U.S.-based neuroimaging initiative of adolescent brain maturation. Diffusion MRI (dMRI) provides unique insights into white matter organization, yet applying advanced processing pipelines and managing technical variability across scanning environments remains challenging at scale. To address these issues, we present ABCD-BIDS Community Collection (ABCC) release 3.1.0, including a curated resource of more than 24,000 fully processed ABCD dMRI datasets. ABCC provides fully processed images, nuanced image quality metrics, adva

Chronic Adolescent CDPPB Treatment Alters Short-Term, but not Long-Term, Glutamatergic Receptor Expression.

Dysfunction of the glutamatergic system is believed to underlie many neurodevelopmental disorders including autism, Rett syndrome and schizophrenia. Metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR5) positive allosteric modulators (PAM) potentiate glutamatergic signaling, particularly indirectly via the NMDA receptor. Preclinical studies report mGluR5 PAMs can improve schizophrenia-relevant behaviours. Furthermore, adolescent administration has shown to prevent cognitive induced deficits in adult rodents. However, there is limited understanding of the short- and long-term neurochemical effects of mGluR5
