Characteristics of patients on penicillamine therapy for rheumatoid arthritis were correlated with the occurrence of different side-effects. Patients developing proteinuria tended to have lower sheep-cell agglutination test titres prior to therapy, but no other correlations were found. It is postulated that rheumatoid factor reacts with immune complexes, causing their precipitation and reducing renal glomerular deposition and therefore the incidence of proteinuria. Penicillamine would surely be the first choice of anti-rheumatic therapy if it were not for its side-effects. It is capable of con

Sera from 263 newborns and infants suspected of congenital toxoplasmosis were tested for the presence of rheumatoid factor (RF) by the latex agglutination test, of which 40 were also tested by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RF was detected in only one serum sample (0.38%), suggesting that false-positive results of the IgM-indirect fluorescent antibody test and the IgM-ELISA due to RF is most unusual in infancy.

The Treponema pallidum particle agglutination technique (TP.PA) was evaluated, in comparison with the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test, microhemagglutination assay for Treponema pallidum antibodies (MHA-TP), and fluorescent treponemal antibody-ABS (FTA-Abs) test for the diagnosis of neurosyphilis. We have studied 198 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients with syphilis, including neurosyphilis, treated syphilis, and with other neurological manifestations than neurosyphilis. All tests were nonreactive in these last group of patients. In the neurosyphilis patients, sensi

Accurate diagnosis of Babesia bigemina infection, an economically important tick-transmitted protozoan parasite of cattle, is essential in the management of disease control and in epidemiological studies. The currently used methods of diagnosis are blood smear examination and serological tests which include agglutination and immunofluorescence tests. These tests have been used in the fild but because they lack sensitivity and specificity, newer and improved methods of diagnosis are being developed. The quantitative buffy coat (QBC) method, using microhaematocrit tubes and acridine orange stain

Brucellosis is a common zoonotic infectious disease with diverse and non-specific clinical manifestations caused by Brucella. Although Brucella can cause damage to multiple systems in the human body, hematological complications are relatively rare. We present a case of a 47-year-old male brucellosis patient with pancytopenia. In May 2018, the patient was diagnosed with brucellosis and recovered after receiving antibiotic treatment (rifampicin 600 mg/day and doxycycline 200 mg/day) for six weeks. However, after three years, the patient experienced a recurring high fever. Brucellosis relapse was

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic transfusion reactions (HTRs) due to anti-P1 have rarely been reported. There is only one report (from 1945) of an acute HTR due to anti-P1.
CASE REPORT: A 74-year-old woman with anti-P1 was given blood that had been found to be compatible by the use of prewarmed serum and saline-suspended red cells (RBCs) and of an antiglobulin test with anti-IgG. The test mixtures were not centrifuged or inspected for agglutination after the 37 degrees C incubation phase. After transfusion of 50 mL of P1 + blood, the patient had an acute HTR (hemoglobinemia, hemoglobinuria, and increase

A fast agglutination screening test (FAST) for the detection of Leishmania antibodies in human serum samples was evaluated under harsh field conditions in northern Ethiopia. Test performance was compared with a standard serological test, namely the direct agglutination test (DAT), and with parasitology. In total, 103 suspected cases were recruited for the study. Based on parasitological examination, 49 patients were confirmed of having visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and the other 54 suspected cases were parasitologically negative. Field evaluation of FAST was possible in blood samples of 89 patie

This study describes the isolation of a new leptospiral serovar from the Djasiman group from an Argentinean aborted fetus of a dog. The strain was isolated from a culture of mixed liver and kidney tissue from one aborted dog fetus. Bitch's serum showed a titre of 1:800 against the new serovar and 1:400 or less against other serovars tested. Microscopic Agglutination test (MAT) with a panel of 38 rabbit anti-Leptospira sera representative for all pathogenic serogroups was performed to establish the putative serogroup of the isolated strain. Serovar identification was done by Cross-Agglutination

PURPOSE: A rapid and efficient diagnostic test was developed for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens in serum samples of active tuberculosis (TB) and extrapulmonary TB patients via a liposomal agglutination-based method.
METHODS: A rapid card test has been developed to facilitate the recognition of high-affinity binding rabbit raised purified culture filtrate protein antibodies coupled on the surface of activated liposomal preparation. In the presence of TB antigens, the polyclonal antibodies bound to the liposomal particles demonstrate a visible agglutination reaction.

Methods for the diagnosis of cryptococcosis have been established, including serotyping and serodiagnosis. Slide agglutination tests with factor sera, the phenol oxidase test, and the growth test at 37C are used for rapid identification of Cryptococcus neoformans. We identified 140 strains and found that 86, 10, and 4% of the isolates were serotypes A, D, and A-D, respectively. Twelve of 14 serotype D strains were isolated from cutaneous cryptococcosis. The most reliable method of serodiagnosis is the latex agglutination (LA) test for detection of polysaccharide antigen combined with protease …

Rapid confirmation of the diagnosis leptospirosis is important in order to apply appropriate treatment; in addition, infected dogs are a zoonotic risk. Culture and isolation of living leptospires from blood, urine, or tissues is considered the reference standard of diagnosis. However, sensitivity are low, and leptospires require weeks to months to grow. Therefore, diagnosis of leptospirosis is most commonly based on antibody testing or the detection of Leptospira spp. DNA by PCR. Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) is currently still the recommended confirmatory test for canine leptospirosis,

Laboratory confirmation of typhoid fever is essential for appropriate medical treatment. Blood culture is a standard test for diagnosis of typhoid fever, but well-equipped diagnostic facilities to perform culture are seldom available in endemic areas. We retrospectively compared 2 diagnostic field tests, a latex agglutination Dri-Dot assay and an IgM Lateral Flow assay, to blood culture, in patients with clinically diagnosed typhoid fever. Sensitivity of the Dri-Dot was 71.4%, and specificity was 86.3% for samples collected at time of first diagnosis. Sensitivity and specificity of IgM Lateral

Chromium chloride was used as a coupling agent for the conjugation of purified cryptococcal polysaccharide to sheep erythrocytes. Sensitized erythrocytes were used in a passive hemagglutination (PHA) assay for antibody to cryptococcal polysaccharide and a passive hemagglutination inhibition (PHI) assay for antigen. The PHA assay was more sensitive than complement fixation, agglutination, or precipitation tests for antibody. The PHI assay could detect submicrogram quantities of soluble polysaccharide. Antigen or antibody could be detected in serum or spinal fluid from seven of eight patients wi
