[Fetal alcohol syndrome].

The author presents cases of dysmorphic children born to alcoholic mothers to illustrate his discussion of the "fetal alcohol syndrome". The fact that this malformative syndrome has not been recognized before 1968 is amazing, particularly if one considers the high frequency of alcohol addiction and the relative specificity of the birth defects making up the syndrome. Newborns from severely alcoholic mothers are small for date, microcephalic, and they have abnormal facial features, as well as an increased frequency of other malformations (heart, genitalia, extremities). Neurological and mental

[Embryonal alcohol syndrome ].

The permanent alcohol abuse of a pregnant woman is of high risk for the embryo especially during the first weeks of pregnancy. It is prerequisite to the embryonic alcohol syndrome that the ethylalcohol passes the placenta. Subsequently hypotrophic infants with multiple malformations of minor and major quality are born. Part of the malformations are characteristic, part of them are unspecific for the disease. They altogether represent the entity of the embryonic alcohol syndrome. Occurrence and intensity of the disease depend on the daily quantity of pure alcohol, especially during the first mo

Drug interactions with alcohol.

Ethanol and drugs can affect each other's absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. When ingested together, ethanol can increase … a proteins extensively enough to modify drug distribution. However, serum albumin levels in chronic alcoholics may be abnormally low so that some drugs, e.g. diazepam, have an increased volume of distribution. In addition to the amount ingested, the duration of regular intake determines the effect of ethanol on drug metabolism. Acute intake of ethanol inhibi …

The alcohol provocation test.

An alcohol provocation test is described wherein a 20% solution of alcohol was injected intravenously in 57 subjects with three major goals: 1) To determine criminal culpability. 2) To determine alcohol activation of the electroencephalogram. 3) To aid in treatment of the chronic alcoholic through personal feedback. The test was found safe and reliable. Results are interpreted on the basis of behavioral observations and blood alcohol levels. Advantages of such a test are reviewed.

Endocrine effects of alcohol.

A variety of effects of alcohol on endocrine function are now well documented. Clinically, the most important of these are alcohol-induced 'pseudo-Cushing's syndrome' and a syndrome of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical unresponsiveness, both of which result from long-term over-indulgence, and impairment of testosterone secretion which may occur following relatively short-term drinking. Evidence indicates that a number of different mechanisms are responsible for mediating the effects of alcohol on endocrine function. In a few instances (e.g. inhibition of vasopressin secretion and impairmen

[Alcohol-induced hyperlipoproteinemia].

Tests on 100 alcoholic patients revealed increased lipoprotein levels in 24%. Type IV was the most frequently ecountered (80%), followed by type II or V. The average plasma triglyceride level of the alcoholic group was significantly increased in comparison with a control population. The causal mechanism of alcoholic hyperlipoproteinemia remains poorly understood. The combination of a genetic defect of lipid metabolism, nutritional factors and acute alcohol excess may have an essential bearing on the incidence of hyperlipoproteinemia. Acute excessive intake of alcohol was significantly increase
