Potential use of genetically modified pigs as organ donors for transplantation into humans.

1. Transplantation is currently viewed as a successful treatment for end-stage organ failure. Its more widespread use is severely limited by a shortage of human organ donors. This has stimulated the scientific and medical communities to look at the potential use of animals to solve this problem. For a number of reasons, the pig appears to be the preferred species. 2. The initial immunological problem encountered in pig-to-primate transplantation is a process of hyperacute rejection, which is mediated by the binding of antibodies to the graft endothelium followed by the activation of the comple

[Infestation of water voles (Arvicola terrestris) with metacestodes of Echinococcus multilocularis in the canton Freiburg (Switzerland)].

The results of an investigation on Echinococcus multilocularis-metacestodes in European water voles (Arvicola terrestris) are shown. The investigation materials were 28 water voles captured in Schermann-traps on a meadow in the canton of Fribourg and subsequently maintained in laboratory cages. The animals were patho-anatomically and histo-pathologically examined, a part of them additionally with an E. multilocularis-specific direct immunofluorescence-assay and/or a polymerase-chain-reaction. Radiographs were obtained from one animal, showing typical calcifications as they often occur with alv

[Anti-brucella agglutinins in aborted women].

52 (6.46 per cent) out of 805 women who aborted spontaneously in Gujarat state, India, were found to have positive Brucella agglutin. Infection with brucella was further confirmed by various serological tests (Rapid plate test, standard agglutination test, Rose Bengal test, Coombs' test, complement fixation test, indirect bacterial haemagglutination test, gel diffusion test and determination of C-reactive protein). Culturing 650 blood clots, 300 placentae and 800 samples of urine of women who aborted gave totally negative results. Women who were selected for this study immediately after admiss

Effects of feed withdrawal duration on animal behaviour, rumen microbiota and blood chemistry in feedlot cattle: implications for rumen acidosis.

Feed withdrawal (FW) is a frequent issue in open outdoor feedlot systems, where unexpected circumstances can limit the animals' access to food. The relationship among fasting period, animal behaviour during feed reintroduction (FR) and acidosis occurrence has not been completely elucidated. Twenty steers fitted with rumen catheters were fed a high-concentrate diet (concentrate : forage ratio 85 : 15) and were challenged by a protocol of FW followed by FR. The animals were randomly assigned to one of the four treatments: FW for 12 h (T12), 24 h (T24), 36 h (T36) or no FW (control group) followe

A descriptive study on epidemiological profile of patients presenting with animal bites at a rural health facility in Uttarakhand, India.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a viral disease caused by Lyssavirus type 1, primarily affecting warm-blooded animals, especially carnivores like dogs and cats. It is classified as a neglected tropical disease and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Rabies spreads through saliva, typically via bites or scratches from infected animals, and 95% of global rabies deaths occur in Africa and Asia. In India, around 6-7 million animal bites are reported annually, with dogs responsible for 95% of rabies cases. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to assess the clinical - social profile

Individual energetics scale up to community coexistence: Movement, metabolism and biodiversity dynamics in fragmented landscapes.

Unravelling the intricate mechanisms that govern community coexistence remains a daunting challenge, particularly amidst ongoing environmental change. Individual physiology and metabolism are often studied to understand the response of individual animals to environmental change. However, this perspective is currently largely lacking in community ecology. We argue that the integration of individual metabolism into community theory can offer new insights into coexistence. We present the first individual-based metabolic community model for a terrestrial mammal community to simulate energy dynamic

Molecular recognition of axonal injury-associated candidate hub genes and predicted inhibitors across Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Limpopo is a very important area for pig production in terms of animal populations and contributions to transboundary animal disease spread. Emerging small-scale pig farmers (ESSPF) are being encouraged to establish operations and spread in South Africa; however, for these farmers to perform optimally, they need to understand the basics of animal agriculture and contribute to enhancing biosecurity and efficient production systems. In the present study, the limitations to efficient production amongst ESSPF were evaluated and some improvements were suggested. It was found that the ESSPF are domi

Geographic Transitions of Domestic Cats in Urban Areas through Animal Adoption Centers and the Implications for Population Dynamics.

Animal shelters address animal welfare in communities through the intake and outcome of companion animals, but these efforts affect population dynamics of companion animals based on the distance animals are moved and the factors that underlie intake and outcome. Using data from an animal shelter in Washington, DC we analyzed cat intakes and outcomes based on geographic and socioeconomic factors. Most intakes were stray cats (59%) and cats relinquished by owners (38%) and most outcomes were adoptions (84%). The highest number of intakes were in high development, low-income neighborhoods, wherea

Prevalence of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in livestock following a confirmed human case in Lyantonde district, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral infection, characterized by haemorrhagic fever in humans and transient asymptomatic infection in animals. It is an emerging human health threat causing sporadic outbreaks in Uganda. We conducted a detailed outbreak investigation in the animal population following the death from CCHF of a 42-year-old male cattle trader in Lyantonde district, Uganda. This was to ascertain the extent of CCHF virus (CCHFV) circulation among cattle and goats and to identify affected farms and ongoing increased environmental risk for future hu

Quality of Reporting and Adherence to ARRIVE Guidelines in Animal Studies for Chagas Disease Preclinical Drug Research: A Systematic Review.

Publication of accurate and detailed descriptions of methods in research articles involving animals is essential for health scientists to accurately interpret published data, evaluate results and replicate findings. Inadequate reporting of key aspects of experimental design may reduce the impact of studies and could act as a barrier to translation of research findings. Reporting of animal use must be as comprehensive as possible in order to take advantage of every study and every animal used. Animal models are essential to understanding and assessing new chemotherapy candidates for Chagas dise

Enteric infections and management practices among communities in a rural setting of northwest Ethiopia.

Infections with enteric pathogens have a high mortality and morbidity burden, as well as significant social and economic costs. Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions are the leading risk factors for enteric infections, and prevention in low-income countries is still primarily focused on initiatives to improve access to improved WASH facilities. Rural communities in developing countries, on the other hand, have limited access to improved WASH services, which may result in a high burden of enteric infections. Limited information also exists about the prevalence of enteric infecti

Interpersonal Gut Microbiome Variation Drives Susceptibility and Resistance to Cholera Infection.

The gut microbiome is the resident microbial community of the gastrointestinal tract. This community is highly diverse, but how microbial diversity confers resistance or susceptibility to intestinal pathogens is poorly understood. Using transplantation of human microbiomes into several animal models of infection, we show that key microbiome species shape the chemical environment of the gut through the activity of the enzyme bile salt hydrolase. The activity of this enzyme reduced colonization by the major human diarrheal pathogen Vibrio cholerae by degrading the bile salt taurocholate that act

Bile diversion, a bariatric surgery, and bile acid signaling reduce central cocaine reward.

The gut-to-brain axis exhibits significant control over motivated behavior. However, mechanisms supporting this communication are poorly understood. We reveal that a gut-based bariatric surgery chronically elevates systemic bile acids and attenuates cocaine-induced elevations in accumbal dopamine. Notably, this surgery reduces reward-related behavior and psychomotor sensitization to cocaine. Utilizing a knockout mouse model, we have determined that a main mediator of these post-operative effects is the Takeda G protein-coupled bile acid receptor (TGR5). Viral restoration of TGR5 in the nucleus

Veterinary needs of dogs in two resource-limited communities in the Gauteng and North West provinces of South Africa.

Information on the socioeconomic aspects and the health status of dogs in 2 resource-limited communities in the North West and Gauteng provinces of South Africa was gathered using semi-structured interviews and a standardised questionnaire. The dogs were examined clinically to determine their health status, and their body condition and age were scored. Most of the dogs (93 % in Jericho and 90 % in Zuurbekom) were infected with hookworm, which poses a threat to animal and human health in the 2 study areas. Many dogs were also being given a protein-deficient diet, which together with hookworm pa

Operational Considerations for Using Deer-Targeted 4-Poster Tick Control Devices in a Tick-borne Disease Endemic Community.

CONTEXT: In the northeastern United States, recommendations to prevent diseases spread by black-legged ticks ( Ixodes scapularis ) and lone star ticks ( Amblyomma americanum ) often rely on individuals to use personal protection or yard-based strategies. The 4-Poster deer treatment stations (4-Posters) suppress tick populations by treating deer hosts with acaricide, potentially offering a community-wide approach for reducing tick-borne diseases in endemic areas. The 4-Poster deployment logistics in mainland community settings are not well documented but are needed for future public health tick

Susceptibility of dairy cows to subacute ruminal acidosis is reflected in both prepartum and postpartum bacteria as well as odd- and branched-chain fatty acids in feces.

BACKGROUND: The transition period is a challenging period for high-producing dairy cattle. Cows in early lactation are considered as a group at risk of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA). Variability in SARA susceptibility in early lactation is hypothesized to be reflected in fecal characteristics such as fecal pH, dry matter content, volatile and odd- and branched-chain fatty acids (VFA and OBCFA, respectively), as well as fecal microbiota. This was investigated with 38 periparturient dairy cows, which were classified into four groups differing in median and mean time of reticular pH below 6 as

Ecology and epidemiology of rabies in humans, domestic animals and wildlife in Namibia, 2011-2017.

Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease that causes a heavy burden on societies. Namibia, a country in southern Africa, is aiming at controlling the disease in its main reservoir, the domestic dog. To facilitate the implementation comprehensive information on the ecology and epidemiology of the disease and surveillance is of utmost importance. The study presented assesses the baseline data for both human and animal rabies surveillance in Namibia in recent times and establishes correlations with ecological and socio-economic data in order to provide an up-to-date picture on the epidemiology of rabie

Partners or passengers? Revisiting the association between diatoms and aquatic animals.

Numerous studies have revealed the importance of research on the communities capable of colonizing animal surfaces (epibionts) and the animals on which they live (basibionts). Very few studies have considered epizoic diatoms, and there are gaps and biases in our knowledge, including the choice of basibionts, the methods used, and the habitats in which they live. This literature review aims to (i) identify the main basibionts that host diatom communities and the diatom taxa associated with them, in both marine and freshwater environments; (ii) explore the key ecological factors shaping these di
