We report 2 patients who had radial keratotomy (RK) to correct myopia. The first patient developed a postoperative hyperopic shift and cataract. Nine years post RK, she had intracapsular cataract extraction and implantation of an Artisan aphakic intraocular lens (IOL). Twenty years post RK, hyperopia and astigmatism progressed to +7.0 -5.75 x 100 with a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/20. AIMS: Multiple genetic causes of congenital cataract have been identified, both as a component of syndromes and in families that present with isolated congenital cataract. Linkage analysis was used to map the genetic locus in a six generation Australian family presenting with total congenital cataract.
METHODS: Microsatellite markers located across all known autosomal dominant congenital cataract loci were genotyped in all recruited family members of the Tasmanian family. Both two point and multipoint linkage analysis were used to assess each locus under an autosomal dominant model.

PURPOSE: To measure visual acuity and vision-related quality of life in individuals in rural China operated on for cataract.
METHODS: Five thousand fifty-two persons age 50 years and older, 90.9% (5,052/5,555) of a randomly selected population in Shunyi County, were examined in the fall of 1996. Visual functioning and quality of life questionnaires were administered to those with presenting visual acuity less than 6/60 in either eye and to those who were aphakic or pseudophakic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy of argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) in patients with aphakia or pseudophakia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed 63 eyes of 63 patients with aphakia or pseudophakia who had uncontrolled open-angle glaucoma and were treated with 180 degrees or 360 degrees ALT.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a modified technique of transscleral fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs) in the management of unilateral aphakia and in cases of IOL exchange.
SETTING: El-Maghraby Eye Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Most glaucoma surgical procedures are less successful in aphakic or pseudophakic eyes. The authors reviewed 91 consecutive initial glaucoma procedures in aphakic patients from 1979 to 1986 to determine successful outcomes and complications. Seventeen eyes of patients who were being followed by their ophthalmologists for aphakic (8 eyes) or pseudophakic (9 eyes) cystoid macular edema (CME) were examined on referral. All eyes showed retinal detachment (RD), and eight eyes had CME with RD. Most RDs were inferior and shallow. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) was noted in 15 eyes (88.2%).
