Executive functioning, temporal discounting, and sense of time in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).

Clinic-referred teens (ages 12-19) with ADHD and ODD (N = 101) were compared to community control (CC) teens, equated for age and sex, (N = 39) on a variety of psychological tasks assessing executive functioning (EF), temporal reward discounting, and time estimation and reproduction. A factor analysis reduced the EF measures to three dimensions, representing CPF Inattention, Working Memory, and CPT Inhibition. Results indicated that the ADHD group had significantly more CPT Inattention than the CC group. No differences were found for Working Memory or CPT Inhibition. The ADHD group displayed s

Evaluation of dopamine transporter gene variations in Turkish children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder treated with methylphenidate adverse effects.

AIM: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood psychiatric disorder, with methylphenidate (MPH) as the first-line treatment. MPH primarily exerts its effects by inhibiting the dopamine transporter (DAT); therefore, variants in the DAT1 gene may affect susceptibility to its adverse effects. METHODS: This study included 47 children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD according to DSM-5-TR criteria who were receiving MPH treatment. MPH-related adverse effects were assessed using the Barkley Stimulants Side Effects Rating Scale. Participants were categorized into group

Healthcare Costs Associated with Adverse Events in Pediatric Patients with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): A Claims-Based Study.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse events (AEs) are common in pediatric patients receiving attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment; however, real-world studies on their costs from a payer's perspective are lacking. Therefore, this study investigated the healthcare costs associated with selected AEs among pediatric patients receiving ADHD treatment in the United States. METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort design, patients aged 6-17 years who received pharmacologic treatment for ADHD were identified from US claims data (October 1, 2015-September 30, 2023) and were categorized into AE and

Is the treatment with psychostimulants in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder harmful for the dopaminergic system?

A major concern regarding psychostimulant medication (amphetamine and methylphenidate) in the treatment of children and adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are the potential adverse effects to the developing brain, particularly in regard to dopaminergic brain function. The present review focuses on the pharmacology of these psychostimulants, their mode of action in the human brain and their potential neurotoxic effects to the developing brain in animals, particularly concerning DA brain function. The potential clinical significance of these findings for the treatme

Life history interviews with 11 boys diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder who had sexually offended: a sad storyline.

Little is known of the possible relationship between a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and sexually offensive behavior in adolescents. Our aim was to understand how adolescents with ADHD who had sexually offended described their childhood experiences and spoke about their diagnostic symptoms. The boys' early lives and relations were unpredictable, and emotional, physical, and sexual limits had been crossed. However, many boys saw themselves or their diagnosis, rather than their parents, school, or "society," as the underlying cause of their behavior. They used diff

Personality characteristics of adults with autism spectrum disorders or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with and without substance use disorders.

We examined temperament and character profiles of 128 adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Participants completed the abbreviated Temperament and Character Inventory. The ASD and ADHD groups showed distinct temperament profiles (ADHD: high novelty seeking, ASD: low reward dependence, high harm avoidance) and low character scores in both groups. We then stratified ASD and ADHD into current substance use disorder (SUD+), former (SUD;), or no history of Substance Use Disorder (SUD-). Novelty seeking and reward dependence were only sign

Clinically significant symptom change in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: does it correspond with reliable improvement in functioning?

This study examined the relation between clinically significant (CS) change in symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and reliable change in multiple domains of functioning in children who participated in the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD. Children with CS change in symptoms were significantly more likely than children without CS change to have reliable change across five domains of functioning. Interestingly, however, depending on the measure of functioning, 14 to 52% of children who did not achieve CS change

Noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (NRIs) for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults.

RationaleAttention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults is controversial. Noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (NRIs) are used for treatment. It's unclear how helpful/harmful they are.ObjectivesThis review brings together available evidence to evaluate the benefits and harms of NRIs in adults with ADHD.MethodsWe searched for all randomised controlled trials that compared NRIs to placebo/no treatment in bibliographic databases (April 2025) and synthesised their results. We assessed the certainty of evidence applying GRADE.ResultsWe included 21 trials, 5124 participants from Europe, Amer

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and premature mortality: A narrative review of the literature.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with a higher risk of premature mortality compared to the general population, although reported risks vary. The aim of this paper was to review studies that have examined associations between premature mortality and ADHD and consider factors that could explain variation in risk estimates. A literature search was carried out using online databases (PMC, OVID, and Scopus library) to identify relevant articles. We then considered: sample ascertainment, sample size, method of diagnosing ADHD and age at diagnosis, sex, age range for mort

Time-resolved aperiodic dynamics in event segmentation in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with difficulties in organizing behaviour over time, yet the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying these temporal control deficits remain poorly understood. The brain continuously segments ongoing experience into discrete events to guide prediction and adaptive action. In our study, we examined whether adolescents with ADHD differ from neurotypical (NT) peers in how they behaviourally and neurally structure continuous experience. Seventy-three adolescents with ADHD and 73 adolescent NT controls viewed a movie while indicating per

Problematic Social Media Use and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Given shared processes in attentional control, impulsivity, and reward sensitivity, problematic social media use (PSMU) may be associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. Yet most evidence has been from cross-sectional studies; multiyear prospective, within-person studies on an association of PSMU with ADHD symptoms are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To estimate bidirectional, within-person associations between PSMU and ADHD symptoms across 5 annual assessments, and to test variation by sex.
