Hyperdilute Calcium Hydroxylapatite for Skin Quality and Contour: Clinical Applications, Technique, and Practical Considerations.

Hyperdilute calcium hydroxylapatite ([CaHA]; Radiesse, Merz Aesthetics) has emerged as a versatile biostimulatory agent for skin rejuvenation across facial and body regions. By attenuating immediate volumizing effects while enhancing product spread and fibroblast interaction, hyperdilution emphasizes long-term neocollagenesis, neoelastogenesis, and extracellular matrix remodeling over large treatment fields. Consensus recommendations and emerging clinical data demonstrate favorable safety and efficacy for addressing laxity in facial and off-face sites, including the glutes, arms, and abdomen.

Advanced materials for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease comorbidity therapeutics.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) frequently co-occur, driven by inter-organ metabolic crosstalk that current single-target therapies fail to disrupt. This review reframes NAFLD-CVD comorbidity through a materials-first lens and advances a translational design framework that couples pathophysiology with engineering principles. We synthesize three major pathological axes, including lipid overflow and impaired reverse cholesterol transport, inflammation-oxidative stress amplification driven by Kupffer cell-NLRP3 and mitochondrial ROS/MAPK signaling, as we

Innovative scaffold-based strategies for diabetic wound healing: progress and prospects.

Diabetic wounds present a major clinical concern due to chronic inflammation, impaired angiogenesis, excessive protease activity, and delayed extracellular matrix remodelling, leading to prolonged healing and high recurrence rates. Globally, over 536 million individuals were affected by diabetes in 2021, with diabetic foot ulcers impacting approximately 15-25% of these patients during their lifetime. Conventional wound dressings often fail to address the complex pathophysiology of diabetic wounds, necessitating advanced therapeutic strategies. Scaffold-based biomaterials have emerged as promis

Application of the novel polysaccharide "colanic acid (CA)" in submucosal injection and wound repair for endoscopic submucosal dissection.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is currently an important minimally invasive treatment for early gastrointestinal tumors. However, there remains a lack of ideal materials that can not only provide good injectability and submucosal lifting performance during ESD but also promote wound repair after ESD. This study aims to evaluate the properties of a novel polysaccharide material-colanic acid (CA). A comprehensive comparison was conducted between CA and clinically commonly used materials (normal saline and hyaluronic acid (HA)) in terms of physicochemical characteristics, submucosal lifti

Oxygen-controlled gamma-irradiation and annealing enable terminal processing of collagen-based biomaterials.

Gamma irradiation is a widely adopted method for terminal sterilization of medical devices; however, its application to collagen-based extracellular matrix (ECM) materials remains limited due to radiation-induced degradation of structural integrity and mechanical performance. Here, we present an engineered terminal-processing strategy that combines oxygen controlled gamma irradiation (25-30 kGy) with post-irradiation dry-heat annealing to preserve ECM functionality while achieving effective sterilization. By modulating oxygen availability during irradiation, this approach alters radical reacti

Breaking Physiological Barriers in Women's Health: Mucoadhesive and Stimuli-Responsive Nanomaterials.

Biomaterials are natural or synthetic molecules that exhibit biocompatibility, biodegradability, or bioresorbability. These materials are used for numerous health applications, including as drug delivery platforms. In drug delivery, biomaterials serve as drug carriers to enhance drug bioavailability and, consequently, treatment outcomes. Additionally, these biomaterial carriers may be functionalized to enhance targeting to a desired tissue. Specifically, in women's health, biomaterials may be designed to use the differences in pH, surface receptors, and cervicovaginal mucus in tissues such as

Precision immunomodulation of viral myocarditis: a spatiotemporal intervention paradigm based on smart biomaterials.

Viral myocarditis (VMC) represents a primary etiology of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in young populations and significantly contributes to the development of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The clinical prognosis of VMC is contingent upon the precise orchestration of pathogen clearance and the prevention of deleterious immune activation. Disease progression is characterized by multifaceted immunometabolic reprogramming, regulated cell death (RCD) pathways (including pyroptosis and ferroptosis), and complex crosstalk between damaged cardiomyocytes and infiltrating immune cells. However, convention

Mechanism-Oriented Biomaterial Strategies for Bone Regeneration in BRONJ: From Pathological Barriers to Evidence-Matched Repair.

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) remains a challenging complication of bisphosphonate therapy because jaw extraction sockets exposed to bisphosphonates represent impaired wound environments rather than ordinary bone defects. This narrative review summarizes clinical, cellular, animal, and biomaterial evidence on the mechanisms that limit BRONJ repair and discusses how these pathological barriers can inform local material design. Current evidence suggests that BRONJ repair is constrained by impaired osteoclast-mediated remodeling, osteocyte and osteoblast dysfunction, oxi

Supramolecular peptide hydrogels for the treatment of ocular diseases: from tissue replacements to drug delivery systems.

Supramolecular peptide hydrogels (SPHs), a unique class of dynamic three-dimensional networks formed by self-assembly of peptides, have demonstrated strong potential for ocular tissue replacement and drug delivery in ophthalmic applications. On the one hand, their mechanical and physiochemical properties can be precisely tailored via rational design of peptides to emulate native ocular tissues. On the other hand, the intrinsic dynamic features of SPHs enable efficient encapsulation of commercial drugs and incorporation of stimuli-responsive or targeting moieties, which in turn facilitate ocula

Anti-amoebic and biocompatible properties of nephrite-embedded contact lenses.

Acanthamoeba keratitis remains a severe complication of contact lens (CL) wear, and preventing trophozoite adhesion to the lens surface is a critical step in preventing infection. This study investigated the anti-amoebic performance and ocular safety of soft CLs embedded with nephrite, a mineral with inherent antimicrobial activity. Clear, cosmetic, and nephrite-embedded CLs were compared. We uniformly dispersed nephrite powder onto the inner mold surface and encapsulated it within the polymer network using the Flusier method, preventing direct corneal exposure while maintaining transparency.

Nanocellulose as an Active Biointerface: Design Principles for Infection-Adaptive and Regenerative Biomaterials.

Antibiotic resistance and biofilm-associated infections represent persistent barriers to effective tissue healing, particularly in chronic and implant-associated wounds. Despite substantial advances in material design, most antibacterial wound dressings remain passive, empirically developed, and poorly adapted to the dynamic biological microenvironment of infection. Nanocellulose (NC), offers exceptional mechanical strength, high surface area, and excellent biocompatibility, positioning it as a versatile matrix for advanced therapeutic applications. Recent innovations focus on engineering NC c

Strain-Accelerated β-Thiolactone Native Chemical Ligation with Kinetic Control Enables Rapid and Selective Hydrogelation for Biofabrication.

A central challenge in biomaterials design is developing cross-linking reactions that are fast, selective, synthetically accessible, and compatible with the nucleophile-rich environments required for cell encapsulation. Native chemical ligation (NCL) offers an attractive route to amide-linked hydrogels under mild aqueous conditions, yet its implementation in biomaterials has been constrained by slow kinetics, free-thiol byproducts, and inhibition in complex media. Here, we demonstrate that deliberate electrophile design through incorporation of a strain-encoded β-thiolactone enables rapid and

Bioartificial human corneas generated by tissue engineering. A historical and technical review.

Different types of bioartificial corneas have been generated by tissue engineering through combining cells, biomaterials, and bioactive molecules. Orthotypical corneal cells can be obtained from corneal biopsies, and include epithelial, stromal, and endothelial cells, whereas heterotypical cells are obtained from alternative cell sources with corneal differentiation potential, such as mesenchymal stem cells. In turn, two main types of biomaterials have been applied to corneal tissue engineering: those generated by the decellularization of natural tissues and biomaterials generated de novo usin

Designing biomaterials with oriented organic nanocrystals for tissue engineering applications.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) has a specific architecture that defines tissue mechanics and helps to guide cell functions. In tissue engineering, it is crucial to be able to mimic the architecture and mechanics of the ECM with biomaterials. However, mimicking the architecture and mechanics of tissues that contain ECM elements oriented at the nanoscale, such as articular cartilage, tendon, intervertebral disc, and cornea, remains challenging. To succeed, an emerging strategy is to orient nanocrystals within materials by using manufacturing techniques such as extrusion printing and magnetic ind

Advancements in polymer-based approaches in diabetic wound healing: a comprehensive review.

Diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2, often leads to chronic wounds due to impaired healing processes, marked by prolonged inflammation, delayed blood vessel formation, and abnormal collagen production. These issues disrupt normal tissue regeneration, slowing healing. To address these challenges, polymer-based wound dressings are being explored as a promising solution. Natural polymers like alginate, chitosan, and hyaluronic acid, as well as synthetic ones like PCL, PLA, and PLGA, offer potential for more effective healing. These materials can be used in advanced delivery systems, such as nanofibr
