A ciliary body tumor preventing angle closure.

We present a case report of a 60-year-old white woman, found to have advanced angle closure glaucoma in the right eye and appositional closure for about half of the left eye and no glaucoma. The remaining angle of the left eye was open with localized heavy pigmentation of the ciliary body band and trabecular meshwork. Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a ciliary body tumor displacing the iris root centripetally preventing angle closure.

Real-World Effectiveness of Tirzepatide in Japanese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Multicenter Retrospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Tirzepatide, a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, significantly affects glucose and body weight-lowering effects in randomized controlled trials. However, real-world clinical evidence in Japan remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the real-world effectiveness of tirzepatide on glycemic and metabolic factors in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: In this multicenter, retrospective, observational study, we included patients with T2DM from seven Japanese institutions who receiv

BMI-Stratified Physiological Responses to a 12-Week Mat Pilates Intervention on Body Composition, Cardiometabolic Risk Factors, and Autonomic Function in Middle-Aged Women: An Exploratory Secondary Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Mat Pilates is widely recommended for middle-aged women, but whether baseline obesity modifies its effects remains unclear. This study compared responses to a 12-week mat Pilates programme between non-obese and obese middle-aged women across body-composition, cardiovascular, blood-metabolic, haemorheological and autonomic endpoints. Methods: In an exploratory secondary analysis of a completed, uncontrolled single-arm intervention cohort, de-identified pre- and post-intervention data from 32 premenopausal women (47.5 ± 7.6 years) were stratified by BMI into non-obese (NOG

Adherence to a "MediterrAsian" diet is associated with weight loss-independent improvements in liver fat and lipid profile, but not glucoregulation or inflammation: secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Greater adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) has been associated with improved inflammatory biomarkers in Western populations, suggesting that the anti-inflammatory effect is crucial for improvements in body weight, body composition, and cardiometabolic risk factors observed with the MedDiet. We previously reported that a calorie-restricted MedDiet adapted to the Asian food culture has beneficial effects on body composition, liver fat, and cardiometabolic risk markers in Chinese women with fatty liver disease. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of MedDiet on inflammation

Association Between Body Composition and Risk of Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Body size has been closely linked to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). However, the association was inconsistent, which may be due to the fact that body size defined by body mass index does not differentiate fat from lean mass or capture body composition distribution. The impact of body composition on POAG remains largely unknown. DESIGN: Combined cross-sectional and cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 88,123 participants and 291,983 participants from the UK Biobank for the analysis of baseline intraocular pressure (IOP) and POAG incidence, respectively. METHODS: Fat and muscl

Occult orbital penetrating injury by plastic straw hidden in birthday cake: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Occult foreign bodies consist of foreign material that remains undetected in the body for weeks, months, or even years. In this case report, we document a unique case in which a patient retained a hidden, occult orbital plastic foreign body for eighteen months following a trauma during which the patient's face struck into a birthday cake. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 33-year-old male presented to the emergency department with acute right periorbital swelling, pain, and erythema eighteen months after his face struck into a birthday cake. Eighteen months prior, the patient reported exp

Breast implant microbiome profile correlates with foreign body response severity.

Biomedical implants significantly enhance quality of life for millions of individuals worldwide. However, maintaining long-term implant function remains challenging, and it is often due to a severe foreign body response, characterized by fibrosis and functional impairment, clinically referred to as capsular contracture for breast implants. Colonization of implant surfaces by low-virulent bacteria has been proposed as a potential driver of severe foreign body response, but evidence from large-scale human studies has been lacking. We found that the implant microbiome composition is significantly

Defective reproduction of passive meaningless gestures in right brain damage: a perceptual disorder of one's own body knowledge?

Right Hemisphere Damaged Patients (RHDP) with left hemiparesis are known to experience motor programming difficulties and to have poorer functional outcome when compared with Left Hemisphere Damaged Patients (LHDP). The role played by body-related cognitive disorders remains unclear. In this study we investigate whether reproduction of passive meaningless gestures may contribute to a further development of this question. Ten RHDP with neglect, 10 RHDP without neglect, 10 LHDP, and 10 controls were given a battery of tasks requiring reproduction of passive meaningless gestures. The gestures wer

Sitting posture influence on the biomechanical responses of the seated human body to whole-body vibration.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is widely used in rehabilitation, clinical practice and sports to improve various health conditions and enhance muscle performance. However, the biomechanical mechanisms underlying these beneficial effects remain unclear. Although vibration transmission during WBV training has been investigated in standing postures, seated postures remain largely unexplored. This study investigated how three sitting postures (slouched, upright, and tense) affect vibration transmission to and through the human body during WBV exposure. Twelve healthy male participants were exposed to

Pilot Investigation on the Metabolic Effects of Cimicifuga racemosa Extract Ze 450 and Voluntary Physical Activity in Female Rats.

Cimicifuga racemosa extracts, particularly the ethanolic extract Ze 450, are widely used to alleviate menopausal symptoms, such as hot flushes and excessive sweating. While their clinical efficacy is well established, the effects of these interventions on systemic energy metabolism remain unclear. This pilot study investigated the impact of Ze 450 on body composition, metabolic markers, and voluntary physical activity in non-ovariectomized female Wistar rats. Animals (N = 36) received Ze 450 at either 30 mg/kg or 130 mg/kg body weight, with or without access to voluntary wheel running over fou

SGLT2 Inhibitors Correct Fluid Overload in Adult Kidney Transplant Recipients-A Prospective Observational Study.

In this longitudinal observational study, we measured urinary glucose concentration, body composition and volume status (bioimpedance spectroscopy) and plasma renin and aldosterone concentrations in n = 22 kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) initiating on SGLT2I at baseline (BL), and after 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decreased by -2 mL/min/1.73 m2 (IQR -10-0) after 1 week and remained stable thereafter. Urinary glucose concentration was 10 (3-24) g/g creatinine after 1 week and correlated with eGFR (r2 = 0.273; p = 0.057). SGLT2I did not affect Hb

Field- and laboratory-based studies on correlates of Chlamydia trachomatis transmission by Musca sorbens: Determinants of fly-eye contact and investigations into fly carriage of elementary bodies.

Musca sorbens (Diptera: Muscidae) flies are thought to be vectors of the blinding eye disease trachoma, carrying the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) between the eyes of individuals. While their role as vectors has been convincingly demonstrated via randomised controlled trials in The Gambia, studies of fly-borne trachoma transmission remain scant and as such our understanding of their ability to transmit Ct remains poor. We examined fly-eye contact and caught eye-seeking flies from 494 individuals (79% aged ≤9 years) in Oromia, Ethiopia. Ct-carrying flies (harbouring Ct DNA) were found to

Development of bioinspired damage-tolerant calcium phosphate bulk materials.

Improving the damage tolerance and reliability of ceramic artificial bone materials, such as sintered bodies of hydroxyapatite (HAp), that remain in vivo for long periods of time is of utmost importance. However, the intrinsic brittleness and low damage tolerance of ceramics make this challenging. This paper reports the synthesis of highly damage tolerant calcium phosphate-based materials with a bioinspired design for novel artificial bones. The heat treatment of isophthalate ion-containing octacalcium phosphate compacts in a nitrogen atmosphere at 1000°C for 24 h produced an HAp/β-tricalcium

The role of a disturbed arginine/NO metabolism in the onset of cancer cachexia: a working hypothesis.

Cancer cachexia is a complex catabolic state in patients with a malignancy, associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This syndrome is characterized by a redistribution of the body's protein content and a subsequent muscle wasting. The aetiology of this syndrome seems multifactorial, but remains unclear. It is suggested that this catabolic state occurs in response to the alterations in immune interactions between tumor and host. The amino acid arginine and its derivate nitric oxide (NO) play various roles in anti-tumor immune response and the body's homeostasis. Glutamine is the precu

Adenosine A₂a receptors and O₂ sensing in development.

Reduced mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, via activation of adenylate kinase and the resulting exponential rise in the cellular AMP/ATP ratio, appears to be a critical factor underlying O₂ sensing in many chemoreceptive tissues in mammals. The elevated AMP/ATP ratio, in turn, activates key enzymes that are involved in physiologic adjustments that tend to balance ATP supply and demand. An example is the conversion of AMP to adenosine via 5'-nucleotidase and the resulting activation of adenosine A(₂A) receptors, which are involved in acute oxygen sensing by both carotid bodies and the bra

Extrapleural Approach for Thoracic Vertebral Stabilization.

Surgical access to the upper thoracic vertebral bodies, defined as T1-T5, remains a technical challenge. The anterior extrapleural approach provides excellent visualization and access to the thoracic vertebrae; however, it remains a challenge due to the presence of the great vessels, sternum and trachea. Herein, we describe the case of a 16-year-old boy with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and autism spectrum disorder, who presented with lower limb paraparesis following a traumatic hyperflexion injury. Imaging revealed a T2 pathological burst fracture due to spinal haemangioma and os

Imaging in orbital trauma.

Orbital trauma is one of the most common reasons for ophthalmology specialty consultation in the emergency department setting. We survey the literature from 1990 to present to describe the role of computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and their associated angiography in some of the most commonly encountered orbital trauma conditions. CT orbit can often detect certain types of foreign bodies, lens dislocation, ruptured globe, choroidal or retinal detachments, or cavernous sinus thrombosis and thus complement a bedside ophthalmic exam that can sometimes be limited in the set

Malpositioned inferior vena cava filter via dual access endovascular technique.

The use of inferior vena cava filters remains a valuable solution for patients with venous thromboembolism who have contraindications to anticoagulation therapy. Some of the most common complications associated with these devices include malposition or migration. In the present case report, we have described the case of a patient who had presented with an unretrievable, malpositioned filter with struts perforating her duodenum, aorta, and vertebral body. She subsequently underwent a two-surgeon endovascular procedure with complete extrication of the filter struts.

Genetics of obsessive-compulsive disorder and related disorders.

Twin and family studies support a significant genetic contribution to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders, such as chronic tic disorders, trichotillomania, skin-picking disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and hoarding disorder. Recently, population-based studies and novel laboratory-based methods have confirmed substantial heritability in OCD. Genome-wide association studies and candidate gene association studies have provided information on specific gene variations that may be involved in the pathobiology of OCD, though a substantial portion of the genetic risk architect
